GAMECO(
TO PLAY VIRG]
RICHMOND T(
BIRDS ARE CRIPPLED
Holcombe and Carson Do Not
Make Trip-Rogers Likely
to Play Tackle
The Gamecock varsity squad left
yesterday afternoon for Richmond
where they will meet the Virginia
Polytechnic Institute in the annual
football game. The Carolina team goes
determined to avenge the six to noth
ing defeat .diministered by the Gob
blers last year.
Twenty-two men will make the long
trip. The team has a fatted list of
causualties. Seideman and Griffin are
definitely out. A ray of hope enters
when it is announced that Harry Wolfe,
sterling tackle, may be able to play in
the Furman game. It may be that
Power Rogers will be given a regular
berth at the left tackle posit on, which
has given Coach Bocock so much
trouble this season.
Virginia Poly played a hard game
Saturday' when they fought the strong
University of Kentucky eleven to a
13-13 draw. The Saturday preceding
this, they defeated the University of
Virginia 6-0, when Esleck, fleet half
back, ran seventy yards around right
end to score a touchdown in the ini
tial quarter. By this comparative dop..
the Virginia team is allotted the ad
vantage, as the Cavaliers won over
Carolina. So many holes have been
kicked in the dope bucket this season,
that we are ready to chunk this "ad
vantage on paper" into the ash can and
say that the two teams are evenly
matched.
McEver, Tech fullback, will be out
because of injuries sustained in the
contest with the Cavaliers, Looney
will take his place. The famed "Pony
Backfield" is expected to be in good
working order to run over the South
Carolina invaders. Whether they will
do this or not is another story.
Probable line-up of teams.

Bob Wimberly in Tie
for Leading Scorer
Carolina Halfback and Wilson of
Presbyterian College Have
36 Points Each
Bob) Wimberly and Charley Wilson,
of P. C., are tied for leading scoring
honors in the state. Both have a
mIassedl a total of 36 points. Another
Gamecock is the third ranking man.
This is the "redl pltumed Bird," Swink.
He has 28 points to his credit, dlespite
the fact that he has not played reg
ularly. "Red's" sure toe, accounts for
a goodl many of his points, for he is
the chief Carolina goal kicker.
T1he Associated Press account of the
Carolina-Citadlel game. gave Bill Coop
er the lone Carolina touchdown, Trhe
play was close, and it wvas really hard
to tell exactly who (lid make the score.
But is was Winmberly who ran over the
line for the points, and not Cooper.
He made two touchdowns in the Ers
k'ne game, one in the Maryland fracas,
two on Wofford, and with six points
at the expense of the Bulldogs, his
total is made up to 36.
Stamps, of P.C., is accredited with
24 points. Bill Rogers has IZ2| and he
is tied with "Whitey" RawI, of Fur
nLan.

THE LONG-HERALDED "battle of

"Crip" Rhame led a concerted Biddi.:
attack on the Terrier "Pups" Saturday,
and the Wofford eleven was forced to
give way. Carolina scored two touch
dlowns in the first quarter and one each
in the th.rd and fourth, to w'~n 25 to 6.
The Carolina freshmen showed a
punch that could not b)e stopped.
Rhame wvas the great star. He scored
two touchdowns, and carried the ball
inuch to miake gains which paved the
way for the other two. His beautiful
endl runs together wvith his fine punt
ing and passing were largely responsi
ble for Carolina winn'ng. Trhe whole
BTddie team kept their eyes open and
took the breaks. Twvo fumbles were
recoveredl and touchdowvns resulted.
In the second quarter Wofford
fought back and shoved over a touch
down. They all but scored again, when
the end of the first half saved the Bid
dies. "Red" Wheeler, former Florence
high end, was the Trerrier star. T1he
University backs found it hard going
to make any headway around his
flank. He also did the punting.
Hayes, Hansen, and Hiza starred for
Carolina. The team has only two more
games on t'he schedule. Citadel comes
here and Furman is to be met in Greeni
ville.

Virginia 6, Carolina 0. But that
dosen't quite tell the whole story. The
score isn't a clear cut indication of the
Virginians superiority. The toe of
Captain Mackall, doughty leader of the
Cavaliers, spelled defeat for a Game
cock who was trying to "come back."
His two placement kicks was the total
scoring power of Virginia.
The Gamecocks went in with the
avowed intention of cleaning off a little
:f the smut which surrounds that very,
very black mark-the Citadel cadets
catastrophe. To the surprise of a
crowd of four thousand people who had
yathered to witness the complete an
nialation of an already fallen Game
:ock, the Cavaliers were barely able
o ease out a six point v'ctory. The Car
>linia line held like a stone wall. Only
mn passes and with the aid of Mack
ill's goals were they able to make any
lieadway whatever.
The Carolina line-up was slightly
rearranged. Before the game started,
there were whispet'ings 'round and
about that Power Rogers was to take
tackle. Fulmer center, and Bill Boyd
was slated to be shifted to the back
field. Only one of the proposed chang
.s actually took place. Rogers sub
stituted for Carson at left tackle and
lid fine work. This was the position
which he played in high school, and he
is a much better defensive player than
lie is offensive.
Virg'nia scored in the first quarter.
Carolina kicked off, and after an ex
change of punts it was the Virginian's
)all on Carolina's forty yard line. Cud
ay took two yards over tackle. Hush
ion threw a neat 12 yard pass to Fried
>erg and it was first down twenty-six
yards from the goal. Hutter went in
and he and Laird worked a series of
line plunges to get w:thin ten yards of
the goal. Mackall made his first place
inent.
The second Cavalier counter came in
the final period. The Garnet and Black
linesmen held the Old Dominion eleven
in midfield. Mackall punted to Wing
field on the 20 yard line. Wingfield
Iropped the pigskin after taking two
>r three steps. A Virginia tackle re
overed. The visitors could not gain
mud Mackall sent another placement
through the bars.
Carolina did not seriously threaten
until the last quarter. Guarino picked
up a loose ball on Carolina's forty yard
line. Virginia was penalized as one of
lher backs held Rogers as he was go
ing for a pass. WVimberly and Sw'nk
Lgainedl one each, and Rogers made
th ree. Wimbe rly ploughed through for
ffteen yardls. The goal looked a lot
closer now andl a Gamecock touchdown
was eminent. All hopes wvere blasted
when Mackall intercepted a pass on the
26 yard line.
Bob Wimberly, Bill Rogers, and
"Monkey" Price played fine football.
Wimberly was put to backing up the
line and he made tackle after tackle.
HeI mlade the two longest runs of the
entire game, one being for sixteen
yards, and the other for fifteen. Rogers
played a good defensive game. Burke
d'd goodl work as did Floyd Thomas.
