TIhis wvill fill a long felt necessity and the benefit to b)e dlerivedl is invaluable. The crowd(edl condlition of the library wvill be re lieved. Thle cap)acity wvill l)e increasedl near ly one hundred p)er cent, b)ut the advantages will be increased mnany times. The contractor is doing more than most people had hoped for and further gain is made by the University. We wish to say that we have never met nor been entertained by a more hospitable and generous folk than the citizens of Drangeburg. For all the years that we.have been making this annual visit we have been Linable to speak any words except those of praise and appreciation for that fine little :ity. We hope that the friendly relations !xisting between the Carolina student body ind our hosts will continue. So with many :hanks for a great time we will look forward :o another visit next year. - U.S.C. - I'Iake Every Day "Howdy" Day "Howdy" Day is a new feature at the Jniversity of Kentucky. The idea has been naugurated there by the men's Pan-Hellen c Council and the observance of "Howdy" lay is to be a monthly occurrence. The Gamecock agrees with the "Ken :ucky Kernel" that the idea is good but vishes to go one better and urge that at the Jniversity of South Carolina we observe 'Howdy" lay every day and on Sunday, too. et us all join in to do this and make the :ampus the most friendly and "most speak ng" in the South. Everybody is everybody's friend, and friends should speak to each )ther. Friends of this type should never be >ff speaking terms. It is an old established custom at Caro ina that every student speak to every other ;tudent, man or woman, and tip hats to fac ilty members. We don't want the idea to lie so let's keep it up. IN colleges NOW those IS AN excellent POLITICIANS WAY to gain WHO are somewhat THIS necessity. The Fire Danger Fire has again threatened the buildings on the campus. Last week the library had a narrow escape and The Gamecock com mented upon it. One day this week an iden tical case threatened Rutledge College. It is time this came to a halt. The cause can be traced to negligent carelessness somewhere. A little foresight and care could have pre vented both cases. We notice that trash boxes are placed against the rear of nearly every building In the campus. It is so easy for this trash to catch fire and next time there may not be anyone near to extinguish it. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure, so we ask those in charge of the Uni versity grounds to remove these trash boxes from their proximity to the buildings to a place where possible fire will do no harm. THE FORUM Student Answers Alumnus Editor, The Gamecock, Columbia, South Carol;na, Dear Sir: I will greatly appreciate space in your paper for the purpose of replying to the letter in The Forum of last week's paper in regard to "Weak Checr:ng." I presume, and I presume that I am correct in the statement, that the writer of the article was never a cheer-leader or an assistant while he, she, or it was a student at our noble unstitution. The .searned author called attention to some remarks made by an "outsider" who attended the Carolina Clemson game in regards to the cheering of the two schools. No doubt neither of them knew that we have among us quite a number of "profiteers' who purchase the student tickets at from twenty-five cents to one dollar and sell them for the price of three to six dol lars each to anyone who may have the coin. He may be an alunmus of Cl -mson, or an alumnis of some other institution; pro>iahly he is a bootlegger or a >ackwoodsman. I have attended qu.te a few Caro1ina Clemson games and I know this to be true. Now will the kind writer inform me how any cheer-leader, no matter how great he is, could lead cheers with a sec. tion of this kind backing him. If the kind author thinks he could get some real "pep" out of a group of that kind, I am sure that our cheer-leader would glad ly accept his aid and assistance. If the author noticed, I daresay he did not find a single human being in the Clemson cheer;ng section who did not have on the uniform of o.d Clemson. Another thing I would like to suggest to the alumnus. Kindly pay us a visit and arrange to be at chapel some morning and I am sure that Dean Baker would allow you a few minutes to make the chapel walls ring with your eloquence in urging the students to atten:l the "pep" meet:ngs. .1 know that our cheer leader and h:s assistants have done everything within their power to get the steudents out for these meetings. I feel sure that if you wou.d be so kind as to do this Mr. Baldwin would be ever grateful to vou. Speaking of cheer-leaders watching the plays of the - game. What is wrong with tha't? It is a known fact that we don't want to yell when our team has the hall and are calling signals. And if I remember cor rectly it is bad sportsmanship to yo,l when the other team has the ball and are also calling signals. So what is wrong with the cheer-leaders seeing every play of the game? I think it is absolutely unnecessary to say anything in regards to "Jimmy" Baldwin being egotist'cal. Fur thermore, I know that he is wvorkin~g as hard for Car. or'na as any mnan on the team, and I have reasons to know this. If you would like to hear my reasons, ask the editor who wrote this and he will gladly tell you. How in the world ca'n "Jimmy'' -or his assistants teach the students the yells when they won't come to the "pep" meetings? So, Good Alumnus, if you will throw the "p)rofi teers" out of our dear o.' school; get the students out to ''pep" meetings; and stop so much crit'cism you would help Carolina and "'JimmyA' Baldwin. -A Student. - U.s.c. - No U.D.C. The U. D. C. is an education in itself. In our pt:b lic schools we learn much of general history, but what (d0 we know of our state, our capital, our University The U. D. C. aims to right the wrongs of history - to shed light on thme dark spots. It also has a charita ble aim. Every year numbers of those decendants of Con federate veterans who are unable to bear their own expenses in coalege are sent on U. D. C. chapter here at the University.
