VIRGINIAI SONS OF OLD I TO BATT] MACKALL IS CAPTAIN Has Been Ten Years Since Two Teams Met-Virginia Won Last Game Sixty years ago while the great war between the states was in progress, the sons of the Old Dominion and the Sons of Carolina fought side-by-side. Val iantly, against terrible odds did they fight. Tomorrow the football teams of both state Universities are to meet, th's time in friendly rivalry against each other. It has been ten years since Carolina and Virginia have met, the last game having been won by the Virginians, 35 to 6. The Gamecocks are under the dis advantage of having this as the third game in ten days. A good many men are too badly crippled to play. Seide man was hurt for the second time this season in the Clemson game. Griffin and Wolfe are out. Coach Earle Neale has a well bal anced team to bring on the field. He has been putting the finishing touches on the team this past week. The strug gles with V.P.I. and V.M.I. were stiff. The eleven is led by McKall, 185 pound guard, who is the cornerstone of the Old Dominion defense. Bick Caldwell, the tackle who was injured in the V.M.I. fracas may be in shape to play. John Benckenstein, who filled Cald wells place in the Tech game has been highly praised. Laird, halfback, and Friedberg, end will be on hand. Joe Harrison, from the Episcopal High School has been showing up well in the backfield. Part of the proceeds for this game will go toward the Walter Camp Mem orial fund. Inci dently another Columbia boy was at the helm of the young Gamecocks last season. This was "Red" Fulmer, and he played center also. Beall was one of the greatest high school centers that this state has ever known. He was a member of the team that took the state flag two yea--s in succession. This ear he has been set ting the woods on fire with the fresh men. He weighs 167 pounds, which is 'rather light for a center. The Biddies are work5ng hard this week for their game tomorrow with Wofford at Spartanhurg. So far they have a percentage of .500, having most to Clemson and won from the "Baby'' Tarhmeels of North Carolina. Fur man took a break and won from the Blue Stockings by the margin of a single touchdown, but it was only after a most desperate battle. WHITEY RAWL IS the hero of the Greenville fans. He is one of the swiftest sidesteppers that has flashed across a Dixie gridiron this season. He zig-zagged through for the Hornet's first touchdown on a beautifully executed triple pass crisscross play. His running mate "Red" Schneider was unable to "get going". He was injured early in the game. CAROLINA 24, CLEMSON 0, not so bad, eh? Considering that the Tigers were once one of the most feared elevens in the Southland. RATS IN FINE GAME Desperate Rush in Last Three Minutes Brings Victory to Scrapping Biddies BY SCORE OF 20 TO 16 Whisonant Makes Three Drop kicks for Tarheels and Almost Wins Game The Biddies triumphed Saturday over the North Carolina freshmen, 20 to 16. With the North Carolinians leading by I three points, "Crip" Rhame shot a 20 yard pass to "H'gh Pocket" Adams. The tall end snatched the throw out of the atmosphere and toppled across the line, giving South Carolina the victory. This was in the last minute of play. It is said to be the closest and hardest fought game ever played on he Carolina field. Hyzer, New Jersey boy, who is one of the Palmetto teams' fastest backs, took the opening kick-off and dashed sixty yards down the field, being thrown on the 30 yard line. Rhame failed to connect up with a receiver on an attempted pass. Three yards were gained over tackle. Rhame took two. He passed to Zobel for a twenty yard gain. The ball was taken to within a foot of the coveted final white mark, but the Tarheel line stiffened and it went over, Maus punted fifty yards and out of bounds. North Carolina scored on Whison ants' dropkick. The Biddies scored early in the second period when Rhame passed twenty-eight yards to Zobel who ran it across. After the th'rd quarter began Maus intercepted a pass. The North Carolina freshmen drove through and could not be stopped. Whisonant made another kick and the score was tied. Rhame of South Carolina carried the ball over for another score after he and his teammates had come within striking distance. The third period ended with first down for North Caro lIna on the 1Z yard line. On the first play of the final quarter Frederick fumbled, but is was recover ed by Atkins. After a succession of line plays, Whisonant passed to Jack son, the final try going over to tie the score at thirteen all. On the next kick off Maus and Jackson ran repeatedly for substantial gains and placed Whis onant in position for a dropkick wh'ch untied the count. In the next three minutes the Biddies battled with the ardor brought on by the absolute necessity of the circum stances and the Tarheels were unable to keel) Adams from taking the pass which won the game.
