Both the outgoing and incoming pres
idents 9f the Clariosophic society based
their addresses for Tuesday night on
the need for the society to adjust itself
to present day conditions. Mr. Warr's
remarks were brief but pointed and
well-chosen. He reminded the society
of the fact that it has become very care
less in its attitude toward the carrying
out' of literary programs.
""The purpose of a literary society,"
Mr. Warr declared, "is to promote in
telhectual development and such devel
oliment can only be obtained by means
of literary exercises." He suggested
certain changes irr the constitution as
he concluded his address.
Mr. Scott, after beginning his re
marks in the usual fashion of an incom
ing president, boldly set out to prove
that literary societies at the University
are now standing in the way of prog
ress. In order to do this he briefly re
viewed the history of the two men's
societies, showing in this that the socie
ties have ceased to be truly representa
tive of the student body.
The main thing set forth by Mr.
Scott was that the Gamecock and Car
olinian shouid be freed from society
control. The argument used was that
these publications be ong distinctly to
the student body, being supported by all
of the students, and that other organi
zations, for instance the School of
Journalism and English department,
know better how to control and direct
the two publications.
Much opposition to the ideas of the
new chair was shown after he had con
cluded. He was heard to say at the,
close of the meeting that his address
aroused more immediate interest than
lie had hoped for. "What will come of
it. I don't know," he remarked, to a

Soc'ety last Tuesday night. Mr. Scott
is also president of the student body.

c:ety. One soc'ety at Chicora and one
at Coiumbia College will be issued each

the society, it was stated, may give indi
v:dual invitations to co-eds or any other
girls whom they may desire, to have
present. A special program is being
arranged and the hall will be appropri
ately decorated.
The literary program craried out last
Tuesday was judged by the critic as
he'ng fairly good. At the close of the
program, reports were heard and the
society adjourned.
