'PEANUT BA TTLE IS WITNESSED A T 'GREEN HA To "KING JAMES" ATTACKS "High-ups" Wage War on "Low Downs" From High Seats in the Rear Twas in the "buzzard roost" of the Columbia theatre the evening that "The Green Hat" was played that the Battle of the Peanuts raged. It will rank among the great contests of h's tory. Great was the stand they made (only they were sitting). The "high-ups" (those in the second tier of seats of the third gallery) be gan the attack upan the "low-downs" (those in the lower tier). Well sup plied with much ammunition supplied from the corner peanut stand, having the advantage of position and feeling confident of victory the "high-ups" let fly bombardment after bombardment against the unsuspecting and ill-pre pared "low-downs." The battle was lead by "King James," of Phi Betta Kappa fame, who concentrated his at tacks upon "The Bruce." "The Bruce," not being a follower of Darwin was utterly without material for a counter attack, but defended himeslf by clever ly removing his head from the paths of the flying bullets. "Yield ye" cried the besiegers. "No" defied the besiegeds, "We have not yet collected sufficient bullets to supply our wants." Victory seemed within the grasp of the "high-ups" when the "low-downs" received unexpected re'nforcements which turned the tide of the battle. An arm of the law (or maybe the League of Nations) had been present before hostilities began. Iookouts were posted to give warning of his approach. He was kept at a safe distance. But sud denly his colleague, another cop, ap peared without warning, upon the scene of war. Where th's new enemy came from no one knew. He was hun gry and not enough of the missles had fallen his way. "Desist", he cried, or words to that effect. "A renewal of the conflict and I shall remove you from the scene", he told "King James." "On second thought I shall insist upon your withdrawal at the present," the cop added. "Sir", answered the king, remember ing the glory of Phi Betta Kappa, "I shall not leave without suff'cient in demnity to cover the expense of com ing to the scene of this war." As he said this, he settled back comfortably with his mighty feet resting upon the rail. Such opposition was unexpected an.I the law was bewildered. It called re inforcements and went into a confer ence. The king chewed peanuts w'th great relish. But soon he stopped. The cop had returned to the attack, and was demanding withdrawal. Steadfast in his determination, "King James" held his ground and repeated his terms. The orchestra had returned to its place; the curtain was preparing to rise. Something must be (lone quickly as ne~ther of the debaters wvould y.eld. Finalfy, as the curtain for the third act began to rise, mediation was attempted by friends of the king with such suc cess that he was allowed to remain on the assurance that hostilities woul-l not be renewed. In disgust "Trhe Bruce" settled back to vent his wrath with crit'cism of the play anid condemnation of the law. -- U.s.C. - Carolina Graduate Wins Music Honors Arthur Cornwell, former University student who received his certificate in journalism in 1925, was awarded first place in the State Music contest at Columbia college last Saturday. This contest was held under the an species of the State Federation of Mus 'c.Clubs to select representatives to the district contest. This, the southeastern district, is comprised of four states; North Carolina, South Carolina, Geor gia and Florida. The winner of the district contest, is g'ven a trip to the sesqui-centennial Exposition in Phila delphia. Mr. Cornwell, who sings tenor has already received recognition, having been encouraged by Madame GaUE Curci in 1923. Callcott Is Author Much Praised Book "Church and State in Mexico" Written by Associate :is tory Professor "Church and State in Mexico," is the title of a book recently written by Prof. Wilfred Hardy Callcott, associate pro fessor of history at the University of South Caro'ina. The book was publish ed at Durham, N. C., off the Duke Uni versity press in 1926 (about a - month ago) and has 356 pages. It is a Ph.D. dissertation of Columbia University. Prof. R. L. Meriweather in a review of the book says, "The book is written in a simple and straightforward style, entirely unadorned, thoroughly in keep ing with the plan and spirit of the work. -An excellent: valuable and withal an interesting piece of research. "In printing and general appearance the volume is a credit to its publishers, and adds another title to the growing list of scholarly publications for which the Duke University press deserves praise." The review appeared in The State, Sunday, October 17th. A copy of this book is to be found vi the University library. - U.S.c. - State Will Observe Road Safety Week Street and Highway Safety Week will be observed thruout South Caro lina during the week November 29th to December 5th. Close behind is tenement 24, with 340, while in third place is found ten ement 16, qualifying with 320. Some confusion was caused by the fact that provision had been made for missing the Tuesday night of fair week. Several classes were held at that time. These classes skipped the meeting of this week and all is smooth sailing again, with no further interruptions. With Dr. Harry Clark of Furman speaking Sunday night, on the subject Of the next meeting, considerable in. terest is expected.
