TRACK SQUADS
BREEZE OUT ON
"CINDER LANE"
M'FADDEN HAS CHARGE
Many Men From Last Year's
Squad Have Reported for
Initial Practice
As the autumn winds grow just a
little more chilly and the dry, sultry
(lays of late summer give way to the
fair, cool days of October, it is not
quite so hard to snap out of the lazy,
comfortable feeling and really put out
a little effort. It is time for the cinder
track devotees to limber up their long
unused muscles and jog around a bit.
"Rooster" McFadden is again in
charge of the squad. During the fall
practices he will be busy with football
and will not have direct supervision
over the men, but will be on hand to
give advice and help when needed.
Training is being started early this
year so. as to give the runners ample
time to be in shape to give out all that
is in them.
Until Christmas the work will be
chiefly jogging, with some speed work
now and then. Cross country runs will
be the usual order of the day. The
running track is not in good shape and
will not be ready until spring. It is a
familiar sight to see the thinly clad
"knights c l the cinder-lanes" doing
their daily dozen miles over the roads
to the back of the gymnasium.
Most of the men reported to the in
itial practice held Tuesday. Some of
the candidates are: Sprints-Verner and
Rubinstien, McCarrol; 440 and 880
Boyce, Cooper, Thomas, Griffin, Walker,
Rogers; mile and two mile--Frierson,

lis, Ballenger; hurdles-Bob Thomas,
Shalcklefo;d, Baker; high jpmp and
pole vault-Rogers, Vance, Shand;

STATE PAGEANT
IS. PROGRESSING
UNDER 'DANNY'
Difficulty- in Obtaining Students
to Act Parts of
Il Fame
In spite of the lack of interest in the
state fair pageant it is actively pro- _
gressing. The casts have all been laid
out and actual rehearsal is well un
derway. Mr. Reed is endeavoring, an-i
has succeeded to a great extent, to
p'ck his players to resemble the per
sonalities of the characters which ther
represent as near as possible. For in
stance, only those persons having
French names can represent Hugue
nots.
Mr. Reed states that his chief dif
ficulty is getting his mob cast. It
seems as if the students are not near
coming up to what he expected from
them.
'Everybody wants to play some
prominent character or else they will
not play at all," says Mr. Reed. "It is
true that everyone can't be a George
Washington or a Robert E. Lee, some
body must be pirates or carpetbaggers."
"Danny" further states that the.
Primary purpose of the pageant is to
show tp the people of South Carolina
the true history of the state and if all
the influential points are not brought
out this purpose will be defeated. The
Indian character is just as important
as the Washington character as for as -
the pageant is concerned. He, there
fore, makes an appeal to the Univer
sity students to show their Carolina
spirit and volunteer to this calling.
