ACTUAL WORK ON FIELD HOUSE NOW UNDER W AY University Athletic Plant and Assembly House for Students Now Under Construction AUDITORIUM FOR SPORTS Graduation Exercises Now to Be Held on the Campus in the Future Actual work on the field house to be constructed as a part of the many new additions to the University's ath letic plant has begun with work, on the excavations and laying of suitable foundation. It- will fill a long felt need here, for in addition it will be an as sembly for the students where they may all gather under one roof. The contract for the building was let some time ago, and work has been pushed forward rapidly. The architect is Carroll Johnson, and contractor, Concrete Construction Company. -This building will put the University on footing with any other college in the South, in the way of an athletic plant, together with the newly cci structed field It will furnish an audi torium for various assemblies and a basketball court for inter-collegiate sports. This is large enough to fur nish three or four courts for practice, so that all teams may work out at once rather (han be cramped for space and time. Downstairs there will be lockers for various athletic teams, Gamecocks and viNitors. The visiting teams will have a place to sleep, with shower baths in abundance. This in itself will cut down the athletic expenses to a greal degree, as inter-collegiate games de mand a large expenditure. It will en able the authorities in charge of the schedule to list larger schools w4t1 much better teams. The seating capacity of the auditor ium in itself will be about five thous and with room to put in extra seat: in any emergency case. This will bc - a great addition to the community al large, for Columbia has no such build ing with an equally large capacity. The lockers will handle all of th< variojs inter-collegiate sports, track baseball, basketball, and the king oi sports, football. There will be regulai ticket offices built into the new build ing, and several ofi' es wll be Io atec there. I.. case there is any space that car possibly be utilized, club roomns will bc established for clubs functioning on th< campus. The "Block C" club in parti cular will be cared for, and a live clut is to be made from these wearers oi the coveted letter. It is thought right and proper that these men who hav< borne the "Garnet and Black" thrt battleg against other schools shouk be so honored. Thirty complete uniforms helmets, shoes, jersies, socks, pants, shoulder pads, etc., have been put into the hands of the first varsity squad. rwenty-eight Freshmen uniforms are to be given to the new men that show up best. The varsity jersies are the things that catch the eye. They are, as usual, of a finely sewn, strong red cloth. The color is of a lighter hue than those - which were used last season. Over on Davis field and in the gym nasium things are moving along more smoothly than ever before. With W lliam Capers at the managerial helm, and with a staff of able assistants the Gamecock gridiron boat is in top notch order. .Capers came down a week ahead, to get things moving right, and he has certainly done his duty. Jimmy Driver has purchased the right kind --- of eqluipmnent and' there is enough of it. Men on the varsity team will have complete and new suits in every detail. The ends, guards, tackles, and centers, wvill have two pairs of shoes, one pair to practice in, and another to wear in actual games. The backs will have three pairs of shoes each. Each man is to have a practice unifo:m, and a p)laying uniform. The football store room resembles an army warehouse. Three or four dozen footballs are stacked high against the wall. All ac cessories that a pigskin tosser might need are contained there. The following is a list of the mana gers and their assistants: Varsity : William Capers, manager ; "Dode" McDow, field manager ; Mel- - vin H-yman, manager reserve; Assist ants: "Dit" Coggeshall, Phil W'lcox, Jack Hamilton, "Specks" Coker. A two weeks strenuous practice has ser ved the purpose of giving the coach an opportunity to separate the "sheep from the goats." No regular scrimmage has been held as yet. The men are given practice in tackling, blocking, sidestepping, falling on the ball and other forms of grid iron routine. Three Carlisle Prep School stars, Zobel, Rhame, and Brand, are candi dates for the backfield. Rhame is run ning quarter at present, though his regular position, while at prep school, was halfback. '1Crip" is the best looking punter on the team, as his kicks are soaring 60 and 65 yards eveir time. Zobel is also showing up w611 in this department of the game. These two run together and with Tipton of Rock Hill are the passers. Men who have shown up best are: Tipton, Rock Hill; Young, Beaufort ; Rhame, Zobel, and Brand of Carlisle; McManus, Cheraw; Bouknight, Colum bia; Peter,Rosseld, N. J.; Hyzer, East Side, N. J.; Garret, Pickens; Wise, St. Matthews; Witherspoon, Sumter; Searles, Columbia; Lambert, Heming way; Ends: Adams, Pickens; Taylor, Mc Caulay; Covington, Rockinghan, N.
