It appears that the "knees" have it. He who attempts to "take in the town" often "taken in." "Good buy for your money" often mear good-by for your money. - U.S.C. - Welcome Freshmen Freshmen, Newmen, we welcome you amor us. Now that you are here and matriculated - students in the University of South Carolir you are considered true and loyal sons of Cart lina. You are expected to learn the traditior of the school of which we are.so proud and t adopt them as the standards by which you wi measure yourself while here. We accept yo as fellows. You are our brothers. The met fact that we have been here before you and hav experience which is not yet yours, is no reaso why you should hold back and feel that you at separate from- the rest of us. All upper-class men were once freshmen and remember th trials which they went through. They kno your troubles and are willing to help you. Carolina is now you new home and will b so for nine months of every year, until you hav received that honor of honors, the diploma, whic signifies that you have measured yourself by tl standards of the educators. Get ab)out; lear the campus, the old boys, the new ones.Eyeryot wants to be your friend, and wants you I be theirs. Speak to everyone and tip your h: to the members of the faculty. They too, ai human and have a fellow feeling towardls yoi No professor is an ogre. Be a man and a frier to other men. And now for some cold hard advice whic we well can give after several years experienc Buckle dlown to work at the start. One hout work during the first few months will mean tw hours less afterwards. Show that you are worker, and here for all you can get and, b~ lieve me, everyone will help you and give itt you. But don't think that you can run the scho4 because you were some big dog in your sma town. No one knows what you were at hom and wouldn't care if he knew. Show what yc have and we will find out what you are Her Actions speak louder than words, and at no plai in the world will you be judged more by wh~ you do than at college. So buckle down now ar remember that you can boss no upper-clas men, but three years hence, if you have show that you have ability, you won't have to try boss the school: the sco.ol will ask you to ta charge. Our Honor Principle Here at Carolina you are considered a gentle man until proven otherwise. Then you are asked to sever you connections with the school. As long as you are here, we trust and honor you - and only ask that you honor yourself. Isn't s that little enough to ask of one? There are no monitors here. Your tests and examinations are perfectly open, and the pro fessors all respect the honor system of Carolina. They have little to gain by it, but you have - nearly everything. You are as free in the class room as upon the campus, f If you are dishortorable no one knows it but yourself. If you have no respect for yourself r don't tool that person, whose name is YOU, r into believing that others won't find it out soon r - enough, and- treat you accordingly. If there is anything worse than a man .lacking a conscience r and self respect, don't bring it around. We can't comprehend a condition worse or lower. It may be hard for new men- to understand a condition as it exists at Carolina and he may find it hard to combat the temptation to plainly cheat, but once he does and asserts himself, then that one will develop and grow. He will find it easier to live honestly than any other way. The Honor Principle lives at Carolina. Help to keep it here. -U.S.C. The Carolina Spirit What is college spirit anyway? Thus the ,s freshman may query, and with good reason. Some upper-classmen might well ask ques tion also, for too large a number of them seem to have no idea of its meaning. It is an un known quantity, a term that is hard to define. But once it exists no one can deny its power. g There is a certain kind of spirit on every col s lege campus. Roughly speaking, it is either a good or bad. Some groups of students by their patriotism and loyal support have built up repu tations for their schools. Most of us have heard it said of one institution or another, that you 0 just can't beat their spirit. This has been said 1 of Carolina as well as of other places. And u every student of the University now has -A e chance-no, the privilege of upholding and ad e ding to this powerful force. College spirit may then be defined as that something which causes students to be loyal and e enthusiastic. It is whole-hearted support of - everything the school promotes. At Carolina it e places upon freshmen the responsibility of wear v ing caps. A few dislike this, but they are the ones who haven't the spirit yet. To all it brings a feeling of pride and a desire to put Carolina e first. If you don't feel that way about it, there e is something radically wrong with you, which hi should b)e righted at onice. e Fvery loyal Carolina student will attend pep n meetings whenever they are held. He will sit in e the cheering section at games, and will yell him .self hoarse without thinking about it. It will b)e second nature with him. When student body .meetings are held he will be present with the -e idea in mind of helping things along, and bet 1- tering the University. At all'times he will put d iCarolina first. .Shall we have 100 per cent loyalty this year ? h C. W. It is a student organi to zation controlled by students and we hope for e your loyal cooperation in its endeavors. If you seek information about anything, ask one of the fellows with the little gold triangle on his coat: if he dosen't know he will find out. We wish to serve you in a spiritual way and will have Bible classes in each tenement, and the renown "All University Services" each Sunday night in the Chapel. If we can be of any personal service please feel free to call on us in the office at Flinn Hall. We hope to help you make this the best year at the best University in the State.
