Last night the annual Junior-Senior banquet was held in the ball room of the Jefferson Hotel. About 150 were present to enjoy the banquet, the pro gram, and the dance which followed. Despite the trouble that the committee encountered in putting the affair across, it was a complete success in every sense of the word. After Dr. Melton's death is seemed almost impossible to continue the plans but as it had been his request that the reception be held, and it would leave a blank in the Universities that should not be, several members of the class - worked with untiring effort and great sacrifice with the result that a success ful Junior-Senior Banquet was held, to go down in the annuals of Carolina and in the memory of those attending. The ball room was converted into a fairy garden, with bamboo vines and gray moss overhead. Shaded l'ghts of many colors gave a soft glow to light the hall. The walls were banked with pine boughs. The banquet table was arranged in the form of a block C, and decorated with pink roses. Garnet programs held bright field daisies. W. M. Boyd, President of the Jun ior class, acted as Toastmaster. The rogram was as follows: Invocation-R. G. Bell. To the Seniors-John R. Pate. Response-Margaret Lancaster. Xylophone Solo-Carol Abrams. To the Guests-Ethel Ann McLurc. Response-Si Seideman. Dance-Harlequ,n and Columbine. A word to the Seniors-Dr. Baker. Music-Selected. A Senior's Responsibility.-Dr. Ball. Our Alma Mater-J. L. Mills. We Hail Thee Carolina-Ensemble. Dr. and Mrs. Baker, and Dean Irene )illard were honor guests of the eve ing. All of the speakers paid tribute to he late Dr. W. D. Melton. Dean Baker poke of the love that he had for every tudent and urged the seniors to ollow his ideals when they stepped ourth into the world at the end of heir college careers. The music during the banquet and or the dance was furnished by an or hestra composed of Carolina men. The banquet menu was as follows : Grape Fruit Cocktail -carts of Celery Salted Almond; Roast Young Goose ed Current Jelly Green Peas Au Gratin Potatoes Head Lettuce with Russian Dressing feapolitan Ice Cream Assorted Cakes Demi Tasse4 The committees wish to acknowvledge le services of Mr. Cain andl Mr. Cros iy, of the Jefferson Hotel, Mr. C. Tr. ,angley, and the Shandon Green Iouses who, through their cooperation mid kindness, made the Junior-Sen'or ossible. The Junior class owes invaluable1 ratitude to J. R. Pate, and V.0. Vain, chairman of the Program ommittee, and the Finance committee espectively, who practically pushed I he banquet across, despite the lack of ooperation from the class as a whole. MELTON Committee Empowered to Pro ceed With Work If Consent Is Gained to Do So At the senior smoker of the Clario sophic society last 'Tuesday night, a comiinnttee was appointed to secure the neces'"y consent, if possible, for the erection of memorial columns to the memory of Dr. Melton. The committee was also empowered to proceed with the work, if such con sent is obtained. If present plans are carried out, two red brick columns with sandstone caps and a light globe on the top of each will be erected, one on each side of the . drive, entering the campus near the home of Professors Rucker, and Moore. This place w'Il be especially appro priate for the memorial to the former member of the society, and president of the University, since it is not only the most public spot on the campus, but is also the drive leading by the society hall. If erected. the society plans to chal lenge the Euphradian to match them with s'milar columns at the drive near the library. Not only will these columns add to the beauty of the canpus, but a pre cedent for permanent improvements by the societies will be set-a prece dent which the classes have not yet seen fit to begin. Throughout the arguments for this subject, punch, ice cream, and smokes were served. and these refreshments were well received )y all the members of the society. After the election of S. L. Ready as the society representative on the Stu (lent Council. the floor was extended to all seniors present, eight in number. and speeches of varying length were given by these men, being the fare well addresses of several. Five seniors were not present to take advantage of the oppo.tunity to talk. By simple addition, therefor-., it will be seen that the society is to award thirteen diplonas at the inter.. society celebration on Monday night of commencement week.
