Deani L. TI. Baker,
University of South Carolina,
My dear Baker:
I was inexpressibly shocked a moment
ago wvhen Dean Stephens told me of the
death of President Melton. You had
told me that he had never been well since
his trips to Chapel Hill and Nashville,
but I had heard nothing later and had
hoped that he was recovering.
I met him only once, but I greatly
enjoyed a conversation with him on the
train from, Nashville, and conceived a
great admiration for him, both as a man
and as a college president. I know it is
a most severe blow to you personally, and
to the University.
Please convey to Mrs. Melton may very
warm sympathy. I have niot had the
pleasure of kmnowing her ; but I can easily
imagine what a severe blow it is to her.
Yours very sincer'ely,
