Phi Beta Kappa Man Married Last Saturday J. F. Allison Weds Miss Ada Traylick The honor of being the first member of the newly inaugurated Alpha chapter, Phi Beta Kappa, at the University, to get married belongs to J. F. Alliston. Saturday, April 17, at 9 P. M., Miss Ruth Fraylick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fraylick, of Eastover, S. C., was mar ried to J. F. Alliston, University of South Carolina student. The marriage took place at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. W. H. Thomp son, 922 Maple street. The Rev. F. Ray Riddle performed the ceremony. Mr. Alliston is from Newark, N. J., and 'is a senior. He is a charter mem ber of Alpha chapter, Phi Beta Kappa, an instructor in physical education, a member of the Pyramid club, and played on the champion footb& team of 1924. He will continue at Carolina until June and expects to come back for his masters degree next year. The couple are now living at 922 Maple street. -USC INDOOR SPORTS CARNIVAL HERE MIDDLE OF MA Y WINNER TO BE REWARDED Boxers, Wrestlers, Fencers and Gymnasts Will Have Con test Next Month The, follAvers of indoor sports at the University will be given a treat in the form of a three day athletic carni val participated in by the boxing, wrestling, fencing, and gym teams on May 19, 20, and 21. The event is of unusuai interest in as much as the men who lead Carolina in their respective slort will he chosen. The boxers, who have been trained by Jack Allison, will start the sports on the afternoon of the 19. The prelimin aries will be participated in by Murphy, I,umiansky, Bert, Glenn. Holiday. Mob ley and Tender. . Those pugilists who are fortunate enough to escape the onslaught of fly'n; lists will assemble again that night in the final encounter. From those, first, second and third places will be chosen. To the winner of first place will be given a handsome minature gold boxing glove; to the second place man will h presented a si,ver glove of the same de sign as the gold. Those who see the matches will witness some, first class boxing, as the glove-men have been training all year for the event and are in the fxiest physical condition. The second (lay will usher in the fen cing and gym teams. Fencing has only this year been introduced into the Uni versity, and is an ideal sport, modeled after the foncing of knights and lords of olden days. The team is composed of Reese Funderbert, Finke1stein, and Cuttino, and is under the sttnervisionl of Bill Pool. The preliminaries and fin als in this newv sport will take p)lace at night, and medals will be awarded to the first three ranking men. An exhibition will be given after the contest, in which the use of broad-swords wvill be showvn. Along with this, one of the prettiest sports of the clay wvid take place. The gym team wvill give an exhibition, wvork ing oni the horse, spring-board and par allel bar, and this wvill be supplimented by tumbling and dancing. The gym team this year is composed o'f McQueen, Summers, Cooper, Glen Po(ol, and Lynn. Lynn won first p)lace last year, anld received a gold medal with the seal of the University on it. A silver medal with a gold seal is giveni for secondc p)lace, and a 'plain silver one for third. Pool is the director and the team will complete for places on the pa rallel and horizontal bars and by tum bling. The building of pyramids (liv ing ones, don't confuse .them wvith those in F,gypt) 'will be demonstrated and a dance will be given to please those of ballroom tases. The afternoon of the third (lay will see the mat-men in action. The pre iminaries will be held and that night the final conitest will take place. Trhose on the team are Tom Moore, Baskin, Kafer, Reed, Clark, --and Harris. They have been coached by Pool and Clark and are expected to put up a real good scrap, and end the sports by a fitting climax. NUMBER 1 P. A. One tie and one victory with no defeats is the record they returned with. That is something to he proud of, as two of the strongest teams in the north state were met. Monday the Gamecocks went up against the strong University of North Carolina 4iet squad. with the Tar Heels favorites. Over went old dope pot when the match ended with a tie, three all. Next the birds met the Demon Dearons of Wake Forest. The Palmettoes were too strong and won four matches to two. The query: "Resolved, That the teaching of evolution be prohibited in all state institut'ons," was upheld by Jenkins and Collier, while Mims Hall and Pate defended the negative argu ment. The negative won the house's and the judges' decision. The discus sion was mainly centered on the truth or falsity of evolution; the schools be ing mentioned as after-throughts. The debate from the house showed the keen 'nterest taken by the members. Many queries were suggested for the inter-society debate, but none be ing adopted, the query committee was given one more week in which to find a suitable one. The date set for the intra-society declamation contest was May 4; that for the inter-society May 7. At the next meeting, April 27, the election of off'cers will take place. to Co.umhia seeking revenge for the se vere drubbing that they received at the hands of the University racquetteers at Clemson. But the Gamecocks have full intention of winning over its rival.
