Start New Novel at
Press Club Meeting
Each Member Required to Make
One Chapter-Ripley Talks
of Short Story
Did you ever hear of a novel being
*r.tten, 15 chapters, in less than an
hour, and with 65 people contributing,
who had not thought of the novel be
fore? If you haven't, it is not strange,
but this very thing was done at the
Press club meeting Wednesday night
in the journalism club rooms.
The program committee decided on
a rather novel idea of having each one
present to tell a chapter frQm the story;
The first one called upon started a
story about Sang Froid, a Noresman,
who was shipwrecked, and found a
beautiful woman and was just fixing to
carry her away when a caveman ap
peared with a dagger-but there the
narrator stopped, and the next in line
had to get him out of that tangle and
bring him into anothc.: and so on.
Before the book was finished, where
poor Jim Jones, formerly Sang Froid,
was fed poison by a flapper, he had
many thrilling escanes from cannibals,
officers, drowning, and women.
After this, Mr. Ripley, a well-known
short story writer, who is the guest of
Dr. Ball this week, gave a talk on how
to write short stories to sell, and he
emphatically declared that he did not
write literature.
He answered questions about how to
prepare manuscripts for publication
and exploded many of the old beliefs
that editors were hard-hearted per
sons who could do nothing but send
stories back or throw them into the
waste basket.
