EW PRESIDENT GIVES POLICIES FOR NEXT TERM DUNCIL PLAN STOPPED All Men Interested in Spe cific Work to Hand in Their Names Bill Boyd, the newly elected presi nt of the University Y. announces he policy of the Y. for the followiig -sr after a conference with the other Pted officers Wednesday night. fr. Boyd said that the Y.M.C.A .at University i? on of the greatest tors in the life of the University dent body, especially i the develop nt of their spiritual life. This com year the newly elected officers bpe to make the Y a much larger or nization and a more representative e than it is at the present. Boyd announces a tentative list of he department of the work for this ear. He asks that any man at the University who would like to serve on ne of the departments or in in any ray interested in the Icind of work which the department carries on, to ive his name in at the Y office so at he can be used as a member of he committee. This will give every an in the, student body a chance to ve some part in this great work. One of the changes that the new of icers are contemplating is to do away rith the old council system of or nization and have departments of he work with a department head and ssistants. Then there will be several en attached to each department. The eparments will meet weekly or as of en as is necessary to carry out the ork of their division. Mr. Boyd is extremely anxious for nen to volunteer for the work. Cabinet To Be Given March 26th-Co-eds Assigned To Get Up May Stunts The "Carnival" was the main sub ject 'for discussion at the regular cab inet meeting of the Y.W. Monday af ternoon. This carnival has been post poned until March 26, and the co-eds are assigned to get up stunts. It was decided that a letter be sent to Columbia College Y. W. president, inviting the students to come, and asking them to get up several stunts. -USC Y. M. DIRECTORS ENJOY SUPPER AT FLINN HALL' DR. D. R. PORTER SPEAKS Tell of Work That Can Be Ac complished By Campus Organizations The Board of Directors of the Y.M. C.A. and the prospective leaders of next years work, had the pleasure of hearing two address last night at a supper meeting at Flinn Hall. The speakers were Dr. David R. Porter, senior secretary of the student work of America, and J. W. Bergthold, the regional secretary for the Souther, district. Dr. Porter is a graduate of Yale University and also a distinguished Rhodes scholar at Oxford. In addition to this he holds the unique distinction of being the only football player who has ever made a touchdown against Harvard after a run of 110 yards. Dr Porter confined his talk to the expansion of the student association. The student associations were the only international organization that with stood the shock of the World War. The characteristics of all of the stu dent associations according to I)r. Por ter is life and vitality. He attributed the source of the powers of the student organizations to the following factors; the initative ability of the students, the fact that the movement covers the whole campus and is. non-d'eneminat ional, and that it is world-wide in its scope. He challenged the members of the Y to carry on a great work which is stimulating in that it is often im possible to attain the desired end. The sum and substance of his challenge was that it. the Y and its members, and it alone that stands as a last line of de fense in keeping the incoming fresh men on the right road. Mr. Bergthold made a short im pressive talk in which he charactized the trouble with the students of to clay is that they try to engage in too many activities. Hei issuedl a wvord of caution along this line, and advised the meni to think things through and not try to do so much in quantity. Mr. J. 0. Van Metre p)residled at the meeting. WVilliamns, and Pate. -USC Blub Ridge Prospect Grows Much Brighter Prospects for Blue Ridge are grow ing brighter according to announce ntents fronm Flinn Hall. Some fifty nen have already been interviewed in he Y office and out of this number here .are 23 good prospects for the ummer conference. The idea behind he Y this year is to get about 30 men o the conference. As fast as they can >e gotten to. some fifty more men will einterviewedl as p)rospects. AND CHICORA HERE Will Be Carnival and Tacky Par. ty Combined-To Have Many Stunts Columbia and Chicora cplleges wil attend the "Y" carnival to be given or March 26th and each of tlhem will bc asked to give two or three stttnts. Th< carnival is to be for the Benefit Fund and a small fee will be charged for ad. mission. The carnival will be a combination of a cabaret and a tacky party, because all coming are expected to dress as tackil) as possible and a prize will be awarded the tackiest individual and the tackiesi couple. A fashion show will be given for thc benefit of the ladies and some startling costumes are being designed. Booths and sideshows will also attract the at tention of the wary wanderer as he ii taking in the sights. Probably the most unique part of the program and the prettiest will be the carbaret scene with pretty girls and handsome men enjoying the food while pretty maids flicker about between the tables with sweetmeats and other things to sell. This carnival will be the first of its kind atten1pted at the University, and both the Y.M. and Y.W. are taking part in the arrangements. The Y.W. cabinet is arranging the program. -USC Lutheran Students Close Meeting Here George Metz of Newberry, Elect ed Pres.; Wilfred Zerbst of Carolina Elected Treas. George Metz. of Newberry college, ,was elected president of the southeast ern region of the Lutheran Student Association of America, at the close of their convention here last Satur day. H. L. MacLaughlin, of Ogelthrope was elected vice-president, and Miss Bonnie Mae Beam, of Lenoir-Rhyne, secretary. Wilfred Zerbst, University of South Carolina student, was elected treasurer. The president and the treasurer will probably attend a convention to be held in Madison, Wisconsin, this Eas ter; and will also go to Chicago during the Christmas holidays to attend the International Student convention.
