Finals During Annual
High School Week
Professor Sam Derrick is chairman
of the High School Debate committee.
The finals will be held at the Univer
sity during the regular High School
Week. The query is "Resolved, That
Cooperative Marketing of Cotton and
Tobacco under the Marketing Act of
1921 is for the best Interest of the
Farmers of South Carolina."
March 26 is the date set for the pre
liminaries and 51 schools are repre
sented. The teams have been ar
ranged in triangles and are as follows :
Blackburg, Union, Woodruff; Cow
pens, Inman, Landrum; Gaffney, Greer,
Greenville; Parker, Simpsonville, Spar
tanburg, in the first district.
In the second district, they are
matched Abbeville, Clinton, Due West;
Anderson boys, Anderson girls, Easley;
Calhoun, Belton.
. In the third district Johnson and
'Rlumb Branch will be paired,and Pros
perity, Whitmire, and Ninety Six.
Rock Hill being the only team entered
in the fourth district will not have a
preliminary.
District five will have Bishopville,
Bethune, and Columbia, Epworth
Hyatt Park, Wedgefield. In district
six, Bennetsville, Fletcher Memorial.
and Ruby meet, and Burroughs, Clio,
and Latta. Florence, Hartsville, and
Kingstree, and Lake City and Olanta
meet in the seventh district.
Estill and Walterboro meet in the
eighth district. In the ninth district
North, and North Augusta, and Swan
sea and St. Matthews meet.
The best affirmative and the best
negative team of each district shall
enter the semi-final contest, which
shall be held at the University of South
Carolina.
The best affirmative and the best
negative of the State shall meet in the
final contest for the Manning cup. This
debate will be held publicly in the Uni
versity chapel. The school which wins
the debate shall have its name inscrib
ed on the cup, together with the names
of the winning representatives.

Grill Club Dances
At Green Parrot
The University Grill club gave a
dance at the Green Parrot Wednesday
night. Each member invited a girl and
an extra boy.
The affair lasted from 9 until 1
o'clock. Paul Blackman's orchestra
furnished the music.
Several University professors and
their wives chaperoned the (lance. The
rooms were decoratedl with blue and
gold, the club colors, and spring
flowers.
*The Grill club is patterned after the
"edting" clubE of Harvard andl Yale.
It has 14 niembers.

At the regular meeting of the Hy
patian literary society Wednesday af
ternoon in the Clariosophic Hall there
were two impromptu speeches ; "The
Benefits of a Literary Society" and
"My Ideal Husband" by Misses Sea
belle Jones and Marie Hook, respect
ively. Miss Jettie Cloyd was in charge
of the witticisms and Miss Margaret
Cook expounded on current events.
It was decided that the medal to be
given for an article in the Carolinian
should he given this year to the writer
of an essay. The subject of the essay
was left open to choice.
An amendment was made to the
constitution providing that visitors
should be allowed to attend the society
meetings occasionally.
The proposed debate for the co-eds
of the University was discussed, and
several members expressed their de
sire to go out for the team.
