Lose to Purple Hurricane by an
Heavy Score-Have Sweet
Revenge on Tiger
The Furman Hurricane, playing on
its home court, downed the Birds 43 to
26 last Friday night. The Game
cocks kept u p with the Furmanitea fot
the early stages of the game but as the
.econd hail grew older it looked as
though the Hurricane quint could not
mi.s eve i the most difficult of shots,
their scoring frenzy placing ci'em well
in advance of the Garnet and Black.
Rogers - and Fair were the only
Gamecocks who could penetrate the
defense put up by the Hurricane suffi
ciently to sink many baskets. The
Purple team kept their basket well
guarded the whole night.
For Furman "Red" Smith and Dor
man were the main bellows behind the
breeze. Smith rang up fourteen points
for his team and his running mate was
right behind him with the unlucky
thirteen.
Carolina started the ball rolling by
scoring a basket but Smith put eleven
points to his teams credit before the
Birds could find the basket again. The
Gamecocks fought up to tie the count
at 11 all but from then on were unable
to keep up with the Purple players.

Well, remembered the Birds that a
certain Clemson Tiger had spoiled a
perfect week for them week before
last, and also had done something that
no South Carolina team had been able
to do all year, that is, go away boast
ing of victory over the Garnet and
Black. With this memory in their
heads the Birds hopped off the train
at the Clemson station with the firm
resolve to make up for that defeat.
And well did they do .that little thing
for when the smoke of the battle had
drifted away over the red hills in that
section the proud bird was holding a
huge hunk of Tiger meat in his hand
with a 36 to 20 score written on it
with the twenty part belonging to the
Tiger.
Holcombe and Fair led in finding the
basket for the Garnet and Black with
ten points each. Rogers was all over
the court and his beautiful floor work
was one of the features of the game.
Seideman and "Russ" were not to be
denied, for they each rang up a few
points just to help along.
Brock for Clemson scored half of
his teams points and was the bright
light in Tigertown for the Tigers. The
fast moving Birds were a little too
swift for the Tigers. The burst of
speed evidently both shocked and
greatly surprised the Tigers for they
had confidently counted on taking the
Birds into camp 'ere night was fallen
good in Tigertown. The game began
at six-thirty in the afternoon.

Passes Life Saving
At least one of Carolina's swimmers
passed the strenuous examiners' test dur
ing the weeko at Pacific Mills under one
of the Red Cross authorities. Miss
EIthiel Ann McI4ure successfully com
pleoed the requirements Wednesday
night after several days of hard work
and she Is now able to examine swim
mers for junior and senior life savers.
She went to Sumter Thursday with the
Red Cross official to assist him in giving
the life savnig tests there. Miss Mc
iLure is an assistant in the Department
of Physical Education and if a pool is
available in the spring will probably givej
swimming istructions to the classes sn

TENNIS TEAMS
TO TAKE TRIP
THRU VIRGINIA
;TATE MEET AT FURMAN
rally Elliott Unable to Play This
Year-Cap Hard to Be
Filled
While aspirants for the tennis team
ire fighting it ott for places on the
squad, the manager; Calhoun Thomas,
is busy making out a schedule for the
season. Although no definite program
has been determined he has iwapped
)ut rather extensive plans and fortun
ate indeed will be the racqueteer who
succeeds in making the team. The
tentative schedule as proposed calls
for a trip into North Carolina and Vir
ginia to be followed by a second into
the upper part of tthe state. The team
will also go to the state meet to be
held at Furman about May 3rd.
It is uncertain as yet who will make
the team. Several old men are out
again as well as some new. Followers
of the sport are regreting the fact that
Tally Elliott, first ranking player last
year, will not be out again this year
due to the doctors orders. His place
will be .hard to fill.
The management has asked us to say
here that the co-operation of the stu
dents is desired in helping out the
team. This can be done by following
a few common sense rules about play
ing on the courts. Some of these are:
don't play on the courts when they
are wet or unmarked; do not use heel
ed shoes while on the courts; members
of the team have precedent over all
others for use of the courts. A student
can do no less for the team and Caro
lina than to heed these requests.

Pullets Suffer Two
Defeats in League
Get Crack at Columbia High on
Thursday Afternoon at the
University Gym
The Co-ed varsity basketball team
seems to be holding an -unlucky card in
the City League Tournament this year,
but they are still fighting hard and ex
pect to win some games yet. Rigid
practices are being held every day.
The co-eds are playing the first game
with Columbia High School at the Uni
versity Gymnasium Thursday. On Sat
urday afternoon at 4:15 they will meet
he renowned Chicora squad for a real
battle, as the girls say, on the Chicora
college court while Columbia college and
Columbia high school play on the same
afternoon. Again on next Thursday af
ternoon the co-eds will meet Columbia
High as the two girls coileges fight it
out.
Practices for class teams are still con
tinuing but games will probably not start
intil after the League Tournament is
over because the gymnasium can only
be secured at certain hours. Only a few
are coming for each class team and if
there are not enough in each class who
have been coming to practice regularly
and keeping basketball training it seems
oha the class tournament will have to,
be abandoned for this year.
