ASSEMBLY VO'I FOR UNIVI NEW CLASSROOM BUILDING Library Improved and Cafeteria Enlarged-Also Other Improvements The Columbia Record-Permanent improvements at the University and also at the Citadel and at Clemson college, were considered and approved by the House of Representatives in its consideration today of the annual ap propriation bill. The "reductionist" in the House opposed a number of the items but were voted down. The University items for improve ments include the following: For a new class room building, $37,500; for a fireproof addition to the library, $17, 500; for an addition to the cafeteria $10,000; and for remodeling work on dormitories, $7,500. A motion to strike out the library and cafeteria items was rejected by a vote of 49 to 39. In passing the items on the Citadel the House approved the proposed $150,000 appropriation for an addition al barracks building at the Citadel. It was brought out during the de bate, in a statement by Representative Mendal L. Smith, of Camden, that the man who had offered the $150,000 to the Citadel, on condition that the state make an appropriation of like amount. was the same man who had several years ago given the Citadel its infir mary. Heretofore the name of the donor has been kept secret. The in firmary was built as a results of a handsome gift by A. B. Brown, of Charleston. An item of $6,000 for contract ser vices, was added to the Citadel appro priation, this having been omitted in the first place by error. An item of $76,000 for rebuilding the agriculture building at Clemson College burned last year, was approved by the House, after voting down a motion by Representative Ashley to reject the item. The House resumed consideration of the appropriation bill Friday under a rule limiting speeches to three minutes each and not allowng any one member to speak more than once. This plan was adopted on motion of Representative McLaurin. The appropriation by the legislature of $10,000 for the men's cafeteria (Stew ard's Hall) at the University will give it a capacity of 300 men. It will now only accommodate about 175. A new class room building will proba biy be placed corresponding to Davis college (a classroom building) and fac ing Green Street. The trustees of the Unversity will decide on the exact loca tion. The $7,500 for general improvements could be placed in twenty different places. In addition to the item for rebuilding the agricultural building at Clemsonj College, an item of $7,500 was voted forj "educational equipment" at that school. For Winthrop College an item of $40, 000 for completion of the teacherage, $7,800 for screens in windows, $1,300 for a (deep well pump and $900 for "non st rucural improvement s," wvere the anpro priations approved by the House. There wvas no opposition. An item of $22,891 for improvements at the John (Ie la Howe school in Mc Cormick county, was votedl as was $12, 000 for improvements at the school for the deaf and blind, near Spartanburg. (E~ditor's Note--This story was received after the first page was sent to press, andl co':equently could only be placed in relatively unimportant place.)
