Building Discusses Plans
Co-Ed Orchestra
The second meeting of what is ten
tatively being called the Carolina Co
ed Orchestra was held in the Woman's
Building Wednesday night. A repre
senative group was present and many
new town girls came to get in line with
the new organization.
The meeting was very informal and
a discussion of name, organization
plans, try-outs, music, performance
and everything in connection with the
project was discussed. Many suggest
ions for a name have been handed in
but none has been definitely decided
upon yet. Everyone is urged to submit
suggestions and announcements will be
made as soon as possible.
Everybody who is interested in an
orchestra or music club and willing to
work to make it a go is to be a mem
ber of the organization whether able
to play any instrument at present or
not.
It is planned to divide into three
divisions; those who can begin playing
together right away; those who need
only a little work to come up to that
point and those who are just beginning
to play. Each group will meet sepa
rately to practice. Those playing one
certain instrument may be called to
gether for practices and given special
help on that instrument apart from the
regular practice hours.
Try-outs will begin next Monday
night at 7: o'clock in Melton Hall. Miss
Smith and Miss Knight are to be the
judges.
On the first night only ukeleles will
be heard. Everyone who plays a uke
lele at all is urged to try out and g4t
into one of the three groups. Tuesday
night the committee will hear mando
lins and flutes. Wednesday night ;
violins, saxophones, banjos, tenor ban
jos and guitars. Thursday night they
will sit in judgement on those who as
pire to piano, drums, jews harps, liar
monicas, trombones, tambourines and
all the other outlaws of the musical
world. The three groups will be an
nounced by the end of next week with
time and hours of practice for each
group.
Work will be begun immediately
upon a program for the first public
performance to be given sometime in
March, to begin a music fund. This
program wvill be quite.varied, including
.emsembles by different instruments,
musical readings, features, special dan
ces, pantomimes, etc. All the talent
and ingenuity of the co-eds will be
brought out in preparing a program for
the initial performance of Carolina's
first Woman's Orchestra.
Miss Virginia Wauchope was elected
chairman of the program committee
and anyone who has an idea for the
performance or a pet parlor trick all
her own is urged to report it to her.
Trhe body voted to have a member
ship fee of fifty cents for music and
general expenses. Miss Ell:m Hough
was unanimously elected secretary and
treasurer.
Several new names were added to
the list already signed out for tryouts
making a total of forty-three aspiring
musicians.

SOUTHERN GLEE CLUBS
ORGANIZE ASSOCIATION
Maurice Matteson, Music In.
structor Here, Elected
Treasuaer
On January 23rd representatives of
southern colleges from West Virginia
to Alabama southward, met at Green
ville and organized the Southern In
tercollegiate Glee Club Association.
The organization of the glee club is
due largely to the efforts of Mrs.
Pickernell of New York city. Her
husband is president of the National
Association of American Glee Clubs.
She outlined the plans of such a body,
and told of the work the National
Association was doing.
After the plans were made know the
representatives voted unaminously for
the organtzation, and elected their of
ficers. Mr. Paul Weaver, University
or North Carolina was elected presi
dent. Maurice Matteson, director of
music at Carolina became treasurer.
Since it is impossible for a contest
to be arranged to decide the Southern
champion, the University of North Ca
rolina Glee Club seemed best suited
to represent the South in the national
contest, and was given the official
right to do so.
A meeting will be held in Atlanta
sometime in April to perfect plans for
a southern contest to be held in At
lanta next year. The officers of the
club constitute the board of directors,
and these with one other representa
tive from each college form the gov
erning body.
"Sport" Saunders, manager of the
glee club, and Maurice Matteson,
director of music, represented Caro
lina at the Greenville meeting.
