CANADIANS FIND
GRAVE FAULT IN
AMERICAN IDEAS
FOR UNIVERSITY WORK
Dominion Schools Claim Social
And Athletic Activities Are
Overemphasized Here
In these days of Rhodes scholarships
and much talk of the efficacy of the
English educational system, students of
America have begun to speculate upon
the defects of American institutions and
to wonder what their brothers across
the water think of us. England is too
far separated from the United States to
expect a fair comparison of actual con
ditions. In the Canadian schools, how
ever, the question of Americanization oc
cupies an important position in the edi
torial eys.
For some weeks The Gamecock has
noticed in its Canadian exchanges a
number of traicles treating the question.
Especially noteworthy in these clippings
have been the features of American edu
cational institutions that are 'pointed
out as undesirable. A large proportion
of these "evils" have come in for fire
by educators of this country. From The
Varsity, daily newspaper of the Uni
versity of Toronto, one of the most im
portant universities in the Dominion
comes this article:
The wholesale Americanization of
Canadian, or British-Canadian institu
tions goes on apace, accelerated by eco
nomic conditions which send Canadian
youths and men across the border in
search of a liviihood, to return, if they
do return, bringing the imprint of Ameri
san standards and ideas. Up to a cer
tain point this Americanization is un
avoidable, possibly even beneficial. How
ever, there are things about the nation
to the south of us which we cannot
thoroughly approve; things which we
more or less good-natured-ly ridicule,
yet which we are unconsciously imitat
ing with closer and more frequent con
tact.
In Canadian University circles, pre
judices seems to be largely in favor of
the ideals of Oxford and Cambridge as
opposed to those of American universi
ties. The universities themselves are in
varying proportions, British-American.
At the same time, we hear the c6ntinual
cry of the American employer's prefer
ance for Canadian-educated men and
women, over and above the products of
his own country's educational system.
Is it, then, the British element in our
education which gives it its high market
vahie? And if we may sum up the dif
ferent manifestations of the British ele
ment in the placing of academic con
siderations before all others, resulting
in a higher standard of scholarship,
may we not prove that this much depre
ciated commodity has after all, a material
as well as a spiritual vaate?
In the matter of inititation Toronto
has taken decisive steps against the in
rush of a useless, and often vicious cus
tomi from the south. So far she has
kert her skirts clean of charges which
might convict her of the designation
"football college", although in the pre
senice of keen competition the temptation
must necessarily he strong. After the
mannier of American universities, how
ever, the social side has become far
over-emphasized, and 'the business of
studlyinig becomes one of heroic concen
tration amidst the buzz of social activi
ties.
Whether or inot the ideals of Oxford
and( Cambridge can he proved to be mar
ketable, surely the hasi- principle of a
university is academic, all other con
siderations, no matter how fascinating
or lucrative, merely secondary. In this
respect at least, we may safely imitate
the universities of the old land, with the
result that college life would become
less complicated, and the standards of
scholarship together with the reputation
accruing to it, consequently higher.

PACIFIC BASKETEERS
The Freshman basketball team admin
istered a severe drubbing to a pickup
team from Pacific Mills last Monday
evening. The score was 57 to 17.
The mill quintet was helpless in the
face of a stream of goals from the hands
of Nolan, Chandler and Win us. Dur
ing the first half while the 'Rat'" first
team had the floor they rarely scored
and then by long, so-called "luck shots."
Chandler was the main cog around which
the school team worked and he played a
wonderful game. With easy, graceful
strides he moved quickly over the court
and p'aced shots from every conceivable
angle. Nolan ran him a close second, t
while Windus made several neat baskets.
Coach Stoney sent in the entire second
team late in the first half. The third t
team replaced them in the third quarter.
Toward the end of the game the first
string men went in again to pile up the
score by more than twenty points.
The Pacific men showed the effects of
little practice as they seemed to be
unable to "get going." Knox and Mar
tin were their best men.

Davis field is undergoing a complete L
change-30 teams are at work every day t
grading, making the field level by taking r
dirt from the Green street side and car
rying it down to the part on Divine t
street.
Three separate fields will be made C
two practice football fields for the va
rsity and freshman, and a field to be c
used only for games will be constructed e
on the old freshman field near the In
firmary, with the entrance on Green t
street. This will necessitate the removal I
of the laundry at the rear of the Infirm- v
ary and the moving back of the field. I
Stands will be erected to seat approxi
mately 6300, with auxiliary stands for
at least 1000 more.
r
The baseball field will be across the v
two practice football fields and prac- d
ticaily in the same place that it is now. v
The stands will probably be moved about t
60 feet. This part of the work will be n
finished in time for early baseball prac- t
tice.
A running track, 440 yards long, will v
be built in practically the same place c
that the old one has been. The new one
will be a cinder track that will compare
favorably with any in the South. This
too, will be finished in time for spring
practice, as several important track meets S
are already arranged. P
The playing field will be planted in
grass, a.fid packed do'wn thoroughly. t
This will make an ideal gridiron, prob-t
ably the best in the state. With the en
largemenit, all the contests for the ment
and wvomen can be carried on inside the
field and ample room will be available. ni
With the pcossible exception of Clem- c
son, this is the largest athletic field in
the state, and surely the best.
And wvhile admiring the improvements,
be sure and utter thanks to our president,
Dr. Melton, who was the instigator of
the movement to enlarge the field.

Adopt Training Rules
Just because examinations are coming
own upon us with a dark overhanging
loud and all other classes will stop for
ight days is no' reason that those work
ng for co-ed basketball teams will have
lay off practicing for so long.
The classes are already lined up for
heir teams and working hard. An out
oor court is being prepared behind Mel
:n Hall so that the girls can practice
very day. It will probably be ready
or use by the first of next week. The
chedule for basketball practice next
>aturday is as follows: Junior-Senior,
:00 o'clock; Sophomores, 3:40; Fresh
1en, 4:20. The schedule for class prac
ices during examination week will be
repared and posted later.
The training rules for those who are
oing out for .teams are summarized as
ollows:
1. Eight consective hours of sleep
eginning not later than eleven o'clock.
2. No food between meals except fresh
ruits, fruit drinks and milk. No Coca
ola.
3. Only one cup of coffee or tea a
ay.
4. One hour of vigorous exercise a
ay.
These rules are to be observed by all
andidates for basketball teams. The
irl who does not keep training will not
e considered worthy of a place on a -
aam. Training slips with the rules in
tore detail will be handed to each stu
eit at class in the next few clays. And
he physical education director observed
n passing that one would do well to
bserve the above rules as a means of
icreasing both physical and mental efii
iency, a thing to be desired now that
xaminations are so close upon us.
The class teams will continue to prac
ice and a tournament will be held simi
ir to the hockey tournament. There
rere about thirty girls out for practice
ist Tuesday morning.
During examination week, the physical -
ducation classes will conduct a tourna
ient between class sections. A team
riil be selected from each class, a sche
ule for games will be posted and they
rill be weeded down to the winning sec
on. The purpose for this novel tour
ament is primarily to furnish fun for
Ie participants and to furnish an op
ortunity for daily exercise to students
rho are studying so hard. Certainly one
an do better work after an hour's vig
rous basketball to say nothing of the
tin to be had out of the games. It :s
specially urged that those not going out
or c'ass teams play in these section
ames, it will be a good opportunity for
ractice.
Those who are not playing will at all
mes be welcomed in the cheering sec
on whether the game is played in Mel
n Hall yard or in the gymnasium.
The basketball coach reports some good
laterial but laments the short amount
i time left to whip it into good shape.
