"SA Y ARABELLA" GIVES SEVENTH PERFORMANCE LARGE CROWD IS PRESENT "Charleston" by "Izzy" White And Harriette Scarborough Added Attraction "Say, Arabella," again scaled the heights to success when it was presented in the Town Theatre for its second show ing in Columbia, and the seventh since initial production by the Co-Ed Glee Club. Another large crowd was present and was pleased with the show which was much better due to severai changes and additions. The Gamecock Orchestra was hailed with much satisfaction on its ap pearance in new costumes. A feature of the production this time was the "Charleston" which was put on by Misses "Izzy" White, and Harriet Scarborough. Several new songs were included in the program, and the girls 'taking part showed the result of good training. It was a much more finished production this time than before. It will probably be shown again in Col umbia at one of the movie theatres, and one or two trips are being planned by the management. No trips will be taken until after exams. - U.S.C. - WAUCHOPE CLUB VOTES TWO NEW MEMBERS The Wauchope Club met at the home -of, Miss Margare Lancastkr. Miss Claudia Cantey and Mr. Frank Woodruff were initiated into membership. Miss Mary Bosse read a few poems, Mr. *Cordes Green gave a talk on "Helen of Troy, as Portrayed in the Literature of the World." Mr. Green began with the portraiture of Helen's character from the 'Iliad', through Aeschylus, Sopho cles, and Nuripides, through the later Greek writers, the French to Marlowe. He described the different attitudes in which she was regarded in the differ ent period. Mr. Hankins read an orginal poem, "A Fish Story". This provoked much mirth and applause. Refreshments were served after the literary program, then the election of officers for the com ing term was begun. Miss Margaret Lancaster was ele,ted; president. Mr Charles Cuttine, vice president, and Miss Claudia Bailey, secretary. - U.S.C. - Much Rye To Be Seen Near Chicken Coop This Spring Wih the approach of Spring, the Wo man's College dresses itself, like wo man, in its spring clothes rather early The tennis courts are being made over and the entire quadrangle is being reno vated. Around the buiading, hiding the corners and bare walls, evergreen shrub bery, and grass have been planted. Even now, the grass, pale green in its young ness, is ablotut an inch an. a hal f high. The vacant p)art of the ground has been planted in rye, so in truth the girls will be coming thru tihe rye this spring. The chairs on the porch give the p)lace a much more "homey" aIpIearance. Where the p)lank walks from the front and rear of the "dorm" join at the street, making a triangle, more shrubs have been piantedI andl the inclosure resembles a flower bed. Ball will be host to the Press Ci'ub at its meeting next Wednes day evening. The club has met at his home several times and the meetings were enjoyed very much. At this meeting, the officers for the next term will be elected and commit tees appointed. At present, J. V. Nielsen is president of the club. The Club was orgain'ed two years ago after the school of journalism was added to the univer sity. - U.S.C. RECEPTION FOR NEW OFFICERS TUESDA Y NIGHT BY EUPHRADIAN SOCIETY Program Featured By Glee Club Quartet, Stump Speeches and Fencing Duel According to the usual custom of giv ing each newly elected president a re ception in his honor, the Euphradian society held a reception Tuesday night in honor of its present staff of officers. Rease Joye of Sumter is president of the society. After a short welcome by the chair, the regular program of stunts was entered into. A talking contest between Kenneth Grimsley and Younginer, seconded by Hiott and Silberman opened the feature part of the evening. Two contests of interest were a race for deputy sheriff of the assembly with Messrs. Cecil Harris and John Pate "'shooting hull with great vigor". Both speeches were very humorous, and were enjoyed by the crowd. The oth.r contest was. between Messrs. Bussey and Collier for the House of Represen tatives from Williamsburg County. Both candidates seemed to be struck on the idea of buying votes and the result was that their -speeches were main..v on finance. In between the above contests the "Million Dollar Quartet", as it was characterized by Mr. Joye in his an nouncement, otherwise the Carolina Glee Qlu Quartet, delighted the audience with several selections. The last number presented something rather novel in the way of a fencing ditel; a revival of the time of chivalry Duke de Reese and Count von Funder hurk were the participants with Court jester Charlie Cuttino as umpire and announcer. Reese won the decision after a hard fight. Last but not least came a period in which "cats" were handed out. The guests changed from an attentive audi ence to one that mingled socially, and the time passed swiftly on. "The fair 1 rays of sunshine", as one speaker chara eterized the young ladies, were from Columbia College, the High School, and our own fair Co-eds. Chicora was un able to accept the invitation of the! society. The regular election of officers for thei last term takes p)lace the next meeting I of the society. JOSEPH KARESH CAPTURES THE KEITT CONTEST MEMBER OF EUPHRDIAN Steele, Grimsley, Warr and Tyler Other Speakers-Cuttino Winner Last Year Joseph Karesh, Euphradian, won the Keitt oratorical contest held in the chape. last Friday night. Karesh is a freshman in the academic school and is the first freshman to win this medal. The.sub ject of his speech was "The Constitu tion". Other speakers were, Crosby Steele. .uphradian, speaking on "Crime"; C. K. Grimsley, Euphradian, "Give Us Back the Constitution of Our Fathers"; O. L. Warr, Clariosophic, "The Great Com moner", and Guy Tyler, Clariosophic, "Success In Life". The judges were members of the Uni versity faculty, Professors Wauchope, Reed Smith, and Wilgus. The presid ing officer was T. K. Collier. This medal was won last year by C. L. Cuttino of Sumter and second place went to Donald Rusell. - U.S.C. - LIFE OF GEN. LEE IS TOPIC OF HYPATIANS The life of General Robert E. Lee in the several different periods was studied in the meeting of the Hypatian Literary Society Wednesday afternoon in the Clariosophic Hall. The early life of Lee was given by Miss 'Gladys Sampson, Miss Irene Si mons told something of General Lee and his soldiers. Some incidents in the life of Lee were given by Miss Ruth Taylor and the last years of Lee, by Miss Marie Hook. Miss Agnes Watts was voted into the society and Miss Lillian Zeigler was ad ministered the oath by the vice-president. Plans for initiation of new members were brought up and a committee is to be appointed by the president to make plans for initiation and for a party to be given some time in the near future. Because of the strenuous work of ex amination week the next meeting was postponed until the second term. - U.S.C. - Co-Ed Beaned on Dome Is Re-Christened As "Bump" Laughing at a stale joke a co-ed lost her balance and fell between the wall and bed. Two scared girls fled from the room while the third grabbed just in time to catch her kicking feet.
