CAGE ART
Schedule For
Frosh Games
Is Announced
NOW IN ROUTINE PRACTICE
Forty Men on Squad-More Ex
pected Out-Uniforms
Have Come
With the greater part of their games
scheduled, the freshmen basketball
squad resumes practice this week after
the Christmas holidays had called a
two-week's rest from the labors of the
court. Coach Burnett Stoney has his
men well into routine practice.
Wednesday training was begun on
defensive work, and the players are
now being given offensive instructions.
The squad is getting its first taste of
college basketball, and is being coached
in fundementals that will be continued
tirough the season. Prior to the holi
days, especial attention was given to
developing individual offensive. Thurs
day night the men signed the training
pledge.
No cuts have been made in the squad,
and there are about 40 candidates try
ing out. A complete list was given in
the last issue of the Gamecock. No
cuts will be made and Coach Stoney
says that he wants to see more men
come out. According to coach there
are many good men who could possi
bly land berths if they same out for
the practices. Workouts are being
held in the gym, alternating after noon
and evening with the varsity.
Freshmen uniforms are of the same
pattern as those of last year. The suits
are white with garnet and black trim
ming on the trunks, and black numer
als on the jerseys.
According to an incomplete schedule
obtained from Coach Stoney. the fresh
man cage season opens here with par
ker high of Greenville furnishing the
opposition. Another team from the
textile center, the Furman frosh. will
be seen here in January.
An upstate trip will be made Feb
ruary 10. 11, and 12: three opponents
will he met. Furman, Clemson, and
either P. C. or Parker high will be in
cluded in the Biddie's northern itiner
ary. Wofford, having no freshman
team. will not be scheduled.
The annual trip to Charleston will
probably be made February 19 when
the Citadel Bull pups will be tackled.
Either the College of Charleston or
Charleston high will be met on this
trip.
Dates for games here with Clemson
and Furman are being arranged. Two
games vill be scheduled with New
berry, a separate trip being made to
play the Lutherans. While no steps
have been taken, the City League may
be reinauguarated this year.
DRIVER AND STONEY
GO TO ASSOCIATION
During the holidays James G. Driver,
Director of Student Activities and
Burnett Stoney, Freshman Coach, at
tendled the annual meeting of the
American Association of Football
Coaches and of the National Collegi
ate Association. The purpose of the
meeting was to discuss affairs in con
nection with college athletics. Mr.
D)river stated the association was
pleased with the conditions of college
athletics at present, and no radical
changes were recommended to the
rules , committee. The association
however, is strongly opposed to the
over-emphasis of athletics in college
in such a manner as to interfere with
acadlemic work and quite a bit of time
w as devoted to the discussion of this
matter. The association also wvent on
record as being opposedl to profession
alism. Such speakers as Grantland
Rice, Major Cavanough, Major Grif
fith, and Major Moore were on the
program at the banquet held at the
Pennsylvan'a Hotel. Robert Zuppke of
Illinois was president of the associat
ion and Gil Doble of Cornell was

THE GAMECOCKS OPEN their of
ficial season with the Blue Dev
ils from Duke here Monday night.
The millionaires are said to have
a good team, but no gamecock has
ever been afraid of a devil as yet.
It will be the first appearance of
the Birds and an overflow crowd
is expected. -
THE STATE TITLE is in that Garnet
and Black bird's eye this year and
he expects to do some vicious claw
ing and scratching for it. Some of
the best material in South Caro
lina is working out at the Univer
sity gym so other teams had better
sit up and take notice.
A JAUNT INTO GEORGIA features
the Carolina schedule for the first
of the week after next. Tech and
Georgia will be met and all revenge
is expected to be gathered in by
the Gamecocks for football vic
tories by the Georgians over Pal
metto teams during the past sea
son.
SOME GOOD TEAMS will visit Col
umbia this year, according to the
schedule. Florida, Tech, Citadel,
Furman, and Clemson may always
be depended upon to give lusty
battle to their opponents. Our
good friend, Mr. Public, will in
deed get an eyeful of good basket
ball this year if he so chooses.
NOT MUCH DOPE concerning the
other state teams has as yet found
its way into the newspapers col
uwnns but one may rest assured
that they are all working hard to
begin the season in an auspicious
manner. Last year was a banner
year for South Carolina in basket
ball and this year is expected to be
even better. One forward in South
Carolina last year scored as many
points in one game as Princeton's
star forward scored during the
whole tournament held up there.. t
WHICH MEANS THAT the basket- 1
ball teams of this state can suc- a
cessfully compete with the so
called "big" teams on even terms y
if the schedule makers around a
these parts will see the light and .
atct accordlingly. It would be a
great thing for Carolina if the
basketball team could take a trip
north andl return with a string of a
scalps gathered from some of the
"Big Three" and a few others up
that way. g(
THE BIDD)IES ARE BUSY also.
Under Burnett Stoney they aret
making rapid headwvay. Promising (
material has showed up for prac- v
tice andi the Biddies are expecting s
to cause a great dleal of trouble (
for any "frosh" team that happens r
to have aspirations for a chain- r
pionship this year.
STONEY HAS a good record as
coach in 1both basketb)all andl foot- .1
ball and so no one need worry as J
to whether the Biddlies are in cap- J
able hands or not. Last year unw- J
til injuries hit his squad his team J
was sweeping everything before it. J
So you may put it down that his
team will be in there fighting hard I
from start to finish this year.I
TRACK WILL BE heard from in just
a short while. The men who wear I
spiked shoes are beginning light
wvork nowv in order to be ready for I
the meets that are looming up in
the near future. Carolina has ]
some good men on hand to (10 the
work so we are expecting some
VIE WORK
Varsity -Squad
Starts Grind
Prospects Fine
MANY OLD PLAYERS BACK
season Opens With Duke Monday
Night-Make Georgia
Trip Soon
After a two weeks rest the basket
)all squad has settled down to the
grind of another season. The pros
>ects for a successful season are ex
:eedingly bright at this time. Among
he old men who are back this year
re Bill Rogers, Swink, Siedeman,
Wise and Lillard. From last years
Riddie squad will be found Holcombe,
Farr, Fair, Swink, R. Brewer, Lamar
mnd Riggins.
It is practically certain that the
lashy Bill Rogers will be at running
guard again. Last year Rogers was
he outstanding man at that position
n this state. He was picked on sev
!ral of the mythical all state teams and
vas given all Southern mention. Rog
,rs is a deadly shot, especially from a
listance and his floor work is beauti
ul. Then Holcombe, who comes from
basketball town, namely Charleston,
vill be at one of the forwards. Hol
ombe can ring the basket from nearly
ny angle of the floor. His eyes will
c a terror to the very best opposing
lefenses for he is at his best on long
hots. Holcombe was the mainspring
n the freshman machine last year and
vill play an important part this year
n the varsity.
Other Stars
At the other forward will probably
e wise or Fair. Wise is a veteran
layer and can be depended upon to
ome through in good style. Fair makes
is debut as a varsity player this year.
Ie is death on short shots and is a
ood floor man. Joe Lillard who is
aptain of the team, will probably be
laced at center. Siedeman, who was
ne of the outstanding guards in these
arts last year, will be back at his old
ost of standing gaurd. He is a hard
ian to get by and he ably defends his
oal against the best 5orwards that
ome against him. "Si" is a hard
ghter and has won recognition from
he sport writers of the South by his
bility. The two Swink brothers will
ave to be counted in the running,
lso. M. Swink is is a member of last
cars varsity squad. Farr, Brewer,
,amar, and Riggins are all good men
nd will give battle to the last for
laces on the team.
Season Promising
With such material on hand no rea
an can be perceived why Carolina
hould not come out well toward the
>p of the heap this year. The season
penfs with Duke University on Mon
ay night. After that the Gamecocks
o not p)lay here until February 26, as
icy hit the road next Friday for a
vo-dlay trip to Charleston, where the
harleston College and The Citadel
'ill be played. I4eaving Charleston the
quad goes direct to Athens, Ga., where
~eorgia will be played. Thle following
ight the Yellowv Jackets of Tech will
eet the Gamecocks in Atlanta.
