Bocock's Team
Beats Citadel
At Orangeburg
(Continted from Page One)
Citadel undodhtedly surprised the
Gamecock with the fury of its attack
at the b,Cjining of the game. With a
few preliminary plays Wimberly punted
to Weeks who fumbled, Seidemann re
covering, but after the Carolina receiver
had fumbled the returned punt and Cit
adel had recovered and punted again,
Jazz fumbled on his. own 20 yard line.
Citadel recovered and rushed the ball
through the line to the 13 yard line.
Weinberg got by the Carolina first line
of defense and found no one between
hinself and goal but Wimberly who
tackled him on the goal line, too late to
prevent a touchdown. Kick for the ex
tra point was blocked.
Jazz Still Kicks
The famous toe of Jazz was re
sponsible for Carolina's three points in
the second ppriod. In the third Rogers
passed to Swink for touchdown and in
the last the Birds ran roughshod and
amassed 20 points.
Carolina's back field worked superbly
through the game except for a tendency
to fumble, a weakness the Citadel
was also suffering. Bill Rogers proved
a match for the wise and wiley Weeks
as a field general if not his superior.
He called the plays flawlessly, ran with
the ball better and passed more accur
ately. At the beginning of the second
half he pulled the play that won the
game. Jazz had been playing havoc
with the Bulldog line clipping off first
downs through both side. In the shadow
of their goal they were determined to
stop him. In the flash of an eye Rogers
shot an unexpected pass to Marion Swink
who stepped over the goar line for vict
ory.
Teddy Weeks won the admiration of'
the Carolina student body for the way
he and his team conducted themselves.
It would be hard not to respect a man
who is making the physical sacrifices
he is for the love of a school and a sport.
His arm was bound in a cast, but lie
was by no means a cripple.
Pleases Home Folk*
Starring for the Gamecocks in the
backfield was Bill Jeffords who gave
the folks back home something to talk
about this winter by bringing several
long and difficult passes down out of
thel air for a total gain of 51 yards.
Two were directly responsible for touch
downs. Jack Wannamaker also ap
peared in the game and bucked over a
touchdown, but was injured soon after
ward, and forced out of the game. "Red"
Swink further distinguished himself as
a ground gainer and P. J. Boatwright
made some pretty dashes.
Wednesday is to Orangeburg what
Big Thursday is to Columbia. 21,000
pedp.le attended the fair that day and al
most every one was interested in the
football game. Twvo student bodies were
present with colors and bands. At the
half Citadel staged a military show and
Carolina had a snake (lance.
The victory over Citadel is especi
ally swveet to Carolina men for the rea
son that Citadel did not win from Caro
lina. As one sport writer of the state
says, Carolina seems to have the habit
of beating Citadel, havvig won the last
six games. The game this year is fur
ther important in that it advances the
Gamecocks to within one step of the
state championship, which means almost
as much in South Carolina as champion
ship of the world. Furman alone op
poses the Bird and the Baptists may
rest assured that nothing will be left un..
done which might cause the Garnet and
Black to fail to wave supreme in the
state this year.
Acid Test
It was said when Carolina beat Clem
son that the Tiger was not a strong
enough team to judge the qualities of
Carolina by, and that the Birds would
have the acid test alip, lied when they met
Citadel. That test has been applied, the
sterling qualities of Bocock's men have
been proven and as they stand now they
are, by points, better than.. any other
team in the state.
Carolina soored first in the second
quarter. Wimberly started things with
r n 1R yar 1 run~ which placed the ball on
Citadels 25 yard line. Tazz rammed two
Snappy Style Adopted
By Instructor For
Gym Uniform
Gone forever are the voluminous
bloomers and white middie of the co-eds
who attended gym classes. They have
been supplanted by a snaippy uniform
consisting of blue jersy knickers and
white' shirts. Everyone seems to agree
that they are more attractive and com
fortable.
The new outfits have been required
of the new students. After this year,
all the woman's classes in physical ed
ucation will probably be required to have
the same uniform.
and Rogers made it first down, Wim
berly and "Red"' Swink put the ball on
the seven yard line. Rogers called for
a field goal and Jazz complied. Caro
iina 3, Citadel 6.
For the touchdowns in the third quar
ter, Berry punted to Wimberly who was
stopped on his own 43 yard line, but
Citadel was offside and got a five-yard
penalty. Jazz made; four and Rogers
first down with seven. Jazz made 11
through the line-eight more-one more.
Rogers made the first down and Jazz
took two. Rogers surprised Citadel af
ter these steady gains through the line
with a swift pass which Swink easily
caught inside the goal line. Jazz added
the point with a kick. Score 10 to 6.
More Scoring
The next touchdown followed im
mediately after the second half had be
gun. Wimberiy had fumbled and re
covered on his 38 yard line. He and
Rogers 'plunged three each and then
Rogers passed beautifully toi Jeffords
for 21 yards, placing the ball on the 11
yard line. A pass to Swink was good
for five yards, the goal was made in two
tries by Rogers. Soore, 16 to 6.
Weeks fumbled on Carolina's 40 yard
line and gave the Birds a chance for
their next touchdown. Rogers and Wim
herly made ten and the ball was in mid
.field. Rogers ran flashily by all save
one of the Citadel men for 25 yards.
Jazz made four, and interference of
Lillard, who as receiving a pass, added
further yardage. Jeffords cat:ght a pass
for a gain of 11 yards and placed the
ball on the five yard line. Wannamaker
and Rogers made two and Wannamaker
took it over. Rogers dropkicked the
point. Score, 23 to 6.
Soon Carolina had another one.
Hutchinson fumbled on Citadel's 20
yard line and "Red" Swink recovered.
A pass from Rogers to Jeffords carried
the ball all the way to the goal and
"Red" Swink kicked the extra point.
Final, 30 to 6.
