Carolina's varsity football team left
Columbia this morning for Richmond
where they will play the fast and heavy
V. P. I. team tomorrow. They have had
light practice since Wednesday when
they defeated the powerful Citadel team
and after a brisk workotut are ready to
tackle the strongest of foes.
Coach Bocock is well known in Rich
mond and especially at V. P. I. where
he coached for five years about 15 years
ago. At that time the cadets were proud
. him and he will get pleasing recog
,nitions from his old acquaintances when
he returns there.
At the beginning of the season the V.
P. I. team was expected to be one of
the greatest in the South. The coach
had big, fast and experienced men to
work with. The team averages about
178 'p,ounds. But the performances of
the team has not measured up to expec
tations. Especially in the matter of of
fensive work the team has been weak
and disappointing.
The heavy eleven lost tq Washing
ton and Lee and to Auburn, but last
week beat the University of Maryland
by staging a comeback. Potentially, V.
P. I. has a great and powerful team
which has thus far not shown its greatest
and strongest game of the year against
South Carolina and perhaps is will not
itself until later in the season, or
possibly not at all.
One thing is certain, the Gamecocks
are pitted against a team which is cap
able of coming through with great things
and should the Virginians reach their
best form and the Birds beat them, the
greatest of credit is due both.

Clemson Team Routed
Completely By Birds
(Continued to page six.)
The second scoring of points came at
the beginning of the seccnd half and
were manet.vered by the wide-awake
Bill Rogers. Seeing that the opposing
backs were close in, he called for a punt.
The ball soared over Chandler's head
a.nd as he chased it it touched his hand.
Bill Rogers scooped it up on the 17 yard
line and raccd for the touchdown. Jazz
made the goal from placement. The
third score was made) in the same per
iod with a placement kick by Jazz from
the seven yard line. Eskew had fum
bled on the 12 yard line and M. Swink
had recovered. Rogers made five and
Jazz kicked the three points.
Jazz Kicks Another.
Jazz added another in the third quar
ter. Wimberly punted out of bounds cn
Clemson's 12 yard line and Link punted
out to his own 27 yard line. The ball
Was advanced to the 20 yard line before
goal was kicked. A touchdown by Rog
ers in the same period and the extra
point made Carolina's total 23. Link
had missed a punt completely on the
fourth down and the ball had gone over
o Carolina on Clemson's 32 yard lie
)ne pass failed but the next from RoL
rs to Swink was good for 27 yards,
lacing the ball on Clemson's five yard
'ne. Jazz plunged four and Rogers tooK
over. Jazz kicked goal.
The fourth period opened with the
iI in Carolina''s possession on Clenm

ON ORANGE
(BY "RADIO
Having disposed of the Citadel Bull
dogs in great fashion at the Orangeburg
County fair, the Gamecockg are off to
Richmond where they will meet the Gob
blers of V. P. I. Saturday afternoon.
The Birds emerged from the combat
\with the Bulldogs in good shape, and
gwill be ready to fight it out with the
Gobblers in Gamecock style.
Coach Bocock and his charges left
Columbia at 11 o'clock Thursday
night, arriving in Richmond in time for
signal practice this afternoon.
By the comparison of scores, Caro
lina seems the better team for the game
tomorrow, but who knows whether
these scores speak the truth?
While the Gamecocks are engaged in
battle with V. P. I. the Biddies will he
battling the Wofford Pups at Univer
sity field. The Pups are bringing a
strong team to meet the Chicks and a
hot battle is promised.
It is true and gloriously true, and no
one knows it any better than the Caro
lina student body which gave its ulti
mate support to the Gamecocks through
out the thrilling battle.
And to climax that great success a
delicious dinner free I And yes, a dance
too. Oh, boy,, but those Orangeburg
people surely know how to entertain.
In an exchange of punts Carolina
was placed -di position to score her lait
three Uloints. Jones got off a bad one
which went out of bounds on his 25
yard line. Wimberly made a gain, and
R. Swink kicked a placement from the
21 yard line. The game ended after a
few more plays.

Defeat came as a surprise to the
North Carolina team, #ccording to in
formation. The Tarheel coach started
his second team against the Biddies, but
after Carolina had drawn first blood, the
Freshmen varsity squad was ordered to
get in the fight. But the Biddies were
out for victory and counted two touch
downs against' the first eleven.
It goes without saying that there was
not a single Carolina or Citadel student
who did not appreciate the kind and
generous hosUitality of the citizens of
the Edisto city. Fifteen loud rahs for
every one of them.
The Biddies' victory over the Frosh
eleven of the University of North Ca
rolina last Saturday illustrated the
strength of Coach Stoney's outfit, and
it is safe to say tha. the Wof ford Pups
will have to give some fight to win.
The contest between the Birds and
Bulldog began with a rush and soon the
latter had crossed the Carolina goal.
But Carolina kept faith with the Game
cock spirit and fought back desperately.
lefore the half had ended Bill Rogers
had directed his team to the threshold
of the Citadel's goal. Rogers then calledI
on Jazz to deliver a field goal. Jazz
obeyed.
Carolina came into its own with the
second half and victory was not to he
denied the Gamecocks. The spirit and
fight that lived with the Birds in the
game with Clemson returned, and the
Citadel cro.mpled before a brilliant at
tack. In the last half of the struggle
Carolina counted 27 points.
Teddy Weeks, all state quarterback of
last year, and the noted field general of
the Bulldogs found in Bill Rogers, Ca
rolina quarter, a worthy opponent in
strategy. Rogers led the Birds like a
veteran and kept the Bulldogs be
wildered.
The whole Carolina team played a
great game, a total of fifteen first downs
being made to a third as many for the
Citadel.
By Carolina's victories over Clemson
and Citadel, the interest in the Carolina
Furman game surges to a greater height.
Manly field will scarcely be large enough
to care for the great crowd which will
witness this affair on November 14.
