Wofford Holds Birds
To Single Touchdown
(Continued From Page One)
at touchdowns by allowing passes
to fall dead. The Gamecocks, having
the ball well into ailen grounds almost
through the contest, made several
beautiful thrusts at touchdowns but
lost the ground gained by failure of
passes. Wofford also showed that
they were almost willing to die for
victory at +*.ese times, too, rising up to
check the Garnet and Black line plays
with all .heir might and main. Caro
lina made three thrusts at touchdowns.
Backs Crippled
Carolina (ntered the game at first
with altered backfield. Boatwright was
hela out by injuries, while Wimberly
was kept on the sidelines until the last
few minutes of play on account of re
cent illness. Jazz has a hurt ankle b-t
was soon injected into the game anyway.
For the Birds the work of Price
stood out. The little fellow spilled
well-directed Terriers plays behind the
line of scrimmage time after time. He
got into the game as a substitute for
Boyd early in the encounter. Pruitt
also showed up well in going down un
der punts, and to him is due mainly the
victory.
The ponderous Jasciewicz starred with
his driving off-tackle plays. Red Swink
was effective with the ball uider his
arm as were also Wimberly and Rogers.
For Wofford, the whole team caused
joy in their cheering section and
amazement from the 9nectators. Reams
played the best defensive ball of all and
drew heavy applause from the stands as
he was assisted to the bench by team
mates,, entirely fagged out.
Colorful Affair
The game as the grandstand saw it
had all the earmarks of a classic. The
stands were full and ablaze with Garnet
and Gold and Black ribbons. Two
strong bands contested among themselves
for the noise-making honors and sev
eral hundred lusty voices yelled them
selves hoarse in cheering their teams.
The contest was one of the most color
ful, Columbia will see this year and the
ones who missed it will regreat their
mistake. It will just about make the
Wofford-Carolina games of the future
anual events to look forward to.
Boyd kicked off intentionally for
about 10 yards and Carolina recovered.
Failing to make first down, Wof ford
took the ball on a punt at the 10 yard
line and gets two first downs on two
whirlwind a*taks. CarolipA stiffened
however and after an exchange of punts
made their touchdown. Red Swink
missed the placement after to:chdown.
Wof ford received behind the goal
posts and punted after being unsuccess
ful at bucking the line. Thr'ee Carolinai
first downs followved in this quarter, all
made by Jack Wright. In the secondi
quarter Rogers passed successfully to
Burke twice for a total gain of 18 yards
The third saw more marching toward
the Terrier goal, only to have Caro
lina passes fall (lead behind the goal
posts.
At the beginning of the fourth, Wof
ford got to midfield for the first time
and had a faraway glimpse of Caro
lina's goal posts upon thc distant hori
zon. Their adlvantage was soon lost
however when Swink grabbed a pass
and pierced deep into Gold and Black
property. He was aided by good in
terference and contributed some pret
ty stepping also. One of his interfer
ers cut downs three would-be tacklers
at once.
Wimberly Get, in
Wimberly entered the game and the
stands shouted, but he was given little
interference and had small chance to
get loose.
Carolina made 11 first downs and
Wofford six. None of the Carolina
passes were intercepted and none were
attempted by Wofford until the last
period. Ptsting was handled well by
Wright for Wofford and Wingfield and
Wimberly for Carolina.
An innovation in cheering was made
when Jipuny Baldwin, head cheer lead.
er led a couple a hundred freshmen
into a special freshman cheering sec
tion and put them through some pep
pery cheers for Caron.
N CAROLINA-W
MAKES VICTORY POSSIBLE
"Jay Bee" Pruitt, veteran guard,
shone brightly this afternoon, making
possible Carolina's touchdown by fall
ing on a blocked punt. The Ander
son boy was also responsible for' the
Gamecock victory over N. C. State
last week in the same way. Watch
him go.

From Atlanta Station
(Continued From Page One)
The eleven week's engagement at
Hendersonville this summer, came to a
close just over a month before the or

when the firsa sounds were heard leak

fiished product that gave a concert sev
eral weeks ago to open the present
season.
Authur Lang. who ranks foremost as
an arranger, has completed a rendition
of "We Hail. Thee Carolina" in march
tilne. This number will be used as the
finale for the dances. aond, will be the

Costumes for the ensemble have been
purchased through a Columbia clothier,

OFFORD GAME
SIDELINE DOPE
By I.M.P.
Si blasted the t1pes of the Gold and
Black when he ' blocked Wofford's
punt. Seems to be getting back into
his stride in that department of the
game.
Cultivate good habits, and fame is
certain. J. B. Pruitt has the knack of
surrounding the opposition's fumbles
and blocked punts. His recovery
brought woe to N. C. State last week
and now the Terriers.
Another star became visible in the
South Carolina football firmament
when Wingfield played his first full
game. When he was replaced by Wim
berly in the last few minutes, he had
earned the lasting praise of the Gar
net and Black. Good punting, return
ing the enemy's kick for considerable
yardage as well as running cleverly
wer al in his day's work.
Six to nothing sounds close, but the
"dope" shows Carolina made 11 first
downs, gaining only one by the penalty
route. The Methodists earner four of the
first-and-ten variety and received two
gratis.
During the whole game the precious
pigskin was in Carolina territory ior
only two short intervals. And the Game
cock had it in possession in each instance.
In the midst of all the bouquets a few
question might be sincere. A six-point
margin is none too healthy, but the Birds
consistently refused to try for a 'pjace
ment or drop-kick to add a margin of
safety. The single attempt failed, but
it came at the (id of the game. Nope.
we don't understand.
More than once everyone's heart
jumped into his throat and nearly came
out Burke clasped a pass from Rogers
that seemed destined to nestle next to
a Wof ford jersey.
We don't mean that Rogers wasn't
shooting them "pretty" for the Columbia
boy zipped them like so many baseball.;.
Wofford made her last bid via the
overhead route. But in spite of some
good passes she lost out on interceptions.
Buster Holcombe showed some de
mmv speed in his first varsity game.
Twice he rshed in and knocked the ball
down as it left tl,e Wofford quarter's
hand. Injuries have kept Buster out of
the early games but if he stays off the
sick list, there will be some fine playing
exhibited around his end.
Nobody can doubt the scrapping
ability of the lads from Wofford. They
have a flashy backfield that meanis
trouble for anybody. "Never-say-die"
may be bold stuf f but the golden jerseys
showved their metal pure gold when they
stopped the Gamecock salients.
"Frog" Reames, for the visitors wvas
the shining light on the defense. This
lad played the game at a sixty-mile-an
hour cli. till lie was taken out in the
last minutes.
"Monkey" Price came through with
flying colors when lhe replaced Bill
Boyd. They say he's built so near the
growmd that the line cani step over him,
but we have yet to see the mani with the
ball do it. Great stuff, Price.
Carolina's line showed class as it
smothered the opposing forw~ards time
after time. "One Lung" Long led his
men ito) the fray with fine spirit.
Now that we have annexed a Trer.
rier"s hide, we prepare to capture the
skins of the Clemson Tiger and Citadel
Bulldog. It wvill be a hard road against
these teams.
Coaches will keep the whole squad
hoping to prepare for South Caro
lina's classic Thursday. A taste of
v'ictory' is sweet, so sweet that every
one has to keep his head up to hold
the cup.
