Within the next week the Gamcco-k
will have undergone his crucial test of
the year. an infallible one by which is
judged the success of all Carolina foot
ball teams, the state fair classic conflict
with Clemson. If the Gamecock won no
other game save this one, the majority
of his suporters would declare that lie
had had a good year, so brilliant and
far-reaching the influrence of the state's
greatest football game. Year after year
it has drawn together the largest number
of spectators of any of the Palmetto
contests.
From the early-season dope it seems
that Carolina stands in a good way to
repeat her win of last year and increase
her number of wins since the Metzger
regime to four out of six games, but
everyone realizes the tricky stunts foot
ball dope does, and the Gamecock, no
exception, is looking to a hard time sub
duing the Tiger of the Hills. Clemson
lost almost all of her last year's team,
said by some to be her greatest of hist
ory, by gradation, while Carolin is gen
erally reputed to be stronger than ever.
The Garnet and Black was superior in
the last meeting, 3 - 0 .
The contest will be fought under
somewhat different circumstances this
year. Now, the Tiger has his back to
the wall fighting to regain his place
among the teams of the state after a
severe setback in his first game of the
year with Presbyterian college due to a
series of tough breaks which resulted
in a three touchdown defeat, although
the Clemson team made 18 first downs
to P. C.'s none. Last year the same
beast was arrogant and fighting from
a lofty perch, placed there by sport fol
lowers all over the state who conceded
him superiority over the rest of the Pal
metto elevens so far as football was
concerned. He did not show the fight
he will undoubtedly exhibit this fall.
This year the entire student body of
the Agricultural Institution will be on
hand to lend their lusty voices, well
trained by hailing many a barnyard ani
mal, in earnest support of their team.
The students will amount to something
above the 1,000 mark and will encamp
on the fair grounds during the time from
Wednesday until Saturday. Coming in
two special trains, they will bring a
large brass band to vie with Olsen's
choicest tooters in furnishing stirring
music for the occasion.
Carolina's practice wvas pointed mainly
at the Tigerrs skin at the beginnig of
last week, although what comes abou;
on the field is held back by the coaching
staff as utmost secret. Work has been
going on min:s the service of"Son"
Fannell, who played in the game last
year. He broke his ankle in the con
test with N. C. State andl will be out
for several weeks. P. J. Boatwright
and Jazz wvere also slightly liurt, but
will be fit and trim for the Trhursda1y
game.
All in all, the game will be one of the
most brilliant of the always-spectacular
meetings between ~the Gamecock-, wear
ing the Garnet and Black of Carolina,
and the 'Tiger, wearing the Purple and
Gold of Clemson.

OUR ATTENTION low turns to the
Biddie-Cub match of tomorrow
afternoon. This struggle will serve
as a preliminary to the South Caro

THE FROSH game, like the affair of

THE CLEMSON CUBS were victims
of a crushing defeat last Saturday,
Georgia downing them 42 to 0. The
Saturday afternoon engagement will
find them trying to avenge this de
feat by sweeping through the Bid

BUT THE CAROLINA Freshmen
have a team which will not be
brushed aside without a real battle.
The Biddies by hard training during
the last few weeks have obtained
an excellent conception of college
football, and are ready for the start
ing moment.
THE TASK of selecting the Freshman
team will not be definitely com
pleted by Coach Stoney until al
most time for the game tomorrow.
FRESHMEN, WE'RE behind you sol
idly, so get into the battle tomorrow
and do your best.

One ot the scrappiest freshman fc -i

from Clemson on Davis Field tomorrow
afternoon at 3 o'clock. AU Biddie
teams have been fighters, but none so
far have shown more pep than the
present brood in their games and scrim
mages against the varsity. All are
full of spirit and win or lose, Carolina
supporters can be assured that they
'will give their best.
All this week the young Birds have
been working earnestly for their ap
proaching game, scrimmaging and
practicing defense on several Clemson
plays. Today they held a light prac
tice before the game to polish off their
play and set them right for their rivals.
Stoney's First Game
The game will be Coach Burnett
Stoney's first as football coach of the
freshmen. He coached freshman ath
letics last spring and aided Sol Metz
ger with the varsity last fall.
Little is known of the Clemson team
but that they are a husky bunch. The
University of Georgia Pups defeated
them decisively last Saturday; but the
Cracker school is boasted one of its
best of a long string of good rat teams
this year. In the game last week,

Wind and dust had more to do with
keeping down Carolina's power on of
fense than Wolves, in the Gamecock's
football contest with N. C. State last
Saturday in which the Garnet and
Black was victorious, 7 to 6. It was
the second straight win from the North
Carolina school.
In the first half of the game the
South Carolinians took the ball from
State on the opponents 26 yard line
and on one continued drive the ball
was pushed over, three first downs
being made in the effort. From then
on, the victors played defensive ball
entirely taking no chances of the wild
winds playing them a mean trick, and
tried no forward passes, one of their
strongest points of attack.
Stat. Score at Close
With about two minutes to play,
N. C. State completed a long pass of
48 yards, McDowell to Austin, which
gave them the ball on the. one yard
line and allowed them to make a
touchdown. Thomas failed to kick
goal.
After this alien touchdown, Emmett
Wingfield, Carolina quarter, received
the kickoff and returned it 60 yards.
"Red" Swink, versatile plunger and
clever runner, was the Carolina star of
the game. It was he, who kicked the
winning point after the Carolina touch
down, and also he who intercepted a
forward pass and raced 50 yards before
he was downed.
In the first half of the game the
Tech men were thoroughly outplayed,
but in the second, with Carolina hold
ing back and taking no chances, they
advanced to a lead in first downs main
