Jimmy Driver, manager of the varsity
publicity, said yesterday for the coaching
staff that the Bird was prepared to give
the foe a hot time to start the season
right. As for the brand of players con
stituting the Seceder squad, Carolina
men know they are as fine as will be
met with in the state from the way in
which they have conducted themselves in
former years.
The game itself, which will be called
at 3:00 o'clock, will be one of the most
spectacular of the opening games ever
held on Davis Field. The student body
will be out, en masse and seated in the
Gamecock Section for concerted cheering
led by Jimmy Baldwin. Professor Geo.
Olsen will have his big brass band atop
the bleachers to add to the fun. The
band men will all be diked out in brand
new hot-weather uniforms for the occa
sion. Many Erskine adherents are ex
pected to come to Columbia for the
game.
Officials have been decided upon and
secured as follows: Referee, Burns (Id
aho), Umpire, Osborne (Wofford) and
Head Linesman, Perry (Sewanee).

Shirt-tails were nailed to the masthead
and the ship of college spirit started over
the seas of another session last Friday
night. Freshmen manned the decks with

kept the ship with its prow in tne middle
of the current.
Immediately follQwing the welcomitg

were ordered to line up for a "midnight
stroll down the main drag," by Cheer
leader Baldwin. Shirts tails, usually hid

a vociferous shout and singing of "We'll
Ride Old Ciemson on the Rail" the pa
rade swung into motion up Sumter street.
Immediately Columbia knew that Caro
lina had arrived, and the street was
soon filled with curious )persons, as well
as many loyal backers of the University.
The line reached from the State Capi
tol back to the University Chapel, the
starting point, so states one authority.
It was at least four blocks long, goor
geously filled with flying white streaks.
At Main the song changed and the happy
line became proclaiming to the world that

diately became jammed, and, from Main
to Taylor on both sides, due to the ser

Tonight ut eight o'clock the churches
of Columbia are giving socials in order
to introduce Carolina students to the peo
ple of their denominations. Invitations
have been sent or mailed out to all the
students by the churches, and can be
secured at the postoffice. All the stu
dents who are not members are invited
to any of the churches.
Columbia College and Chicora girls
are also invited. There are a number of
girls at these schools who belong to
other churches besides the Presbyterian
or Methodist so there will be a large
group of them at each church, according
to the information received from the
committee which has the socials in
charge. The churches at which some
social will be held tonight are as fol
lows: First Baptist, Washington Street
Methodist, Main Street Methodist, First
Presbyterian and Arsenal Hill together
at the First Presbyterian, both Lutheran
churches at Friendship Hall, 1633 Main
Street.

On the retum of the line to the inter
section of Main and Gervais the "gang"
ralied around the traffic light and "We
Hail Thee Carolina" was loudly and rev

and the crowd dispersed, mostly to re

activities.
