(By Fred. Minshall)
Tomorrow afternoon Bob Galloway,
South Carolina's youngest football coach
will lead his Erskine Seceders into the
Gamecock camp for the first contest of
the year of both elevens, and, incidental
ly, he will try to return to his Due West
fireside bearing aloft the proverbial fat
back.
From whisperings escaping the con
servative little town, it is apparent that
the people are confident of a team much
better than was put out last season. The
coach has installed a huddle system of
attack which is said to make, beside
other things, tha calling of signals eas
ier.
The most painful loss of all to the
Due Westerners is McDonald, tackle of
last year's team, who was prominently
mentioned for several All-State teams.
This is not causing Bob to weep very
copiously, however, for he has several
young Ipchydermata on deck for line
positions, among whom are Captain
Campbell, 196 pounds, and "Big" Wil
liams, 186 pounds.
For the offense there is Pratt, who
was seen on Davis Field last year. He
punts, runs and passes beautifully and
snags a peach of a pass. His running
mate at half is Jones of the last yar's
Frosh team. Bonner and White are back
to fill the end positions and Burgess and
Keaton are again in the backfield.
With these strong facts looking them
in the eye it is certainly that the old
Bird will not take Galloway's team light
ly. The Gamecock has had little hard
practice so far due to the lofty tempera
ture, and is confident they will have to
extend themselves to overcome Erskine
and its strengthened eleven.

been corrected by the call for Monday.
All men who are interested in the
cross-country are asked to be at the
gym promptly at 3:30 o'clock. Rooster

Calhoun Thomas,acting- manager of
the University Tennis Club, announces
that some time during next week the
reorganization of the net club for the
session will be effectedl. Mr. Thomas
said that announcement as to the time
or the meeting of the tennis players
will be made from the chapel the day
before the meeting.
The prospects for snappy teams are
very good according to Thomas,
EIjiott, Wilson and ;Coleman
the high ranking stars of last year,
have returned , and a number of other
good players on the campus will dem
onstrate their ability at the sporting
art.
In commenting on the winning op
portunities of the University Tennis
Club, Mr. Thomas said that the play
ers are showing good form. Several of
the men, including Beattie, Fair, Varn,
Cain, Fishburne, Gaston, Jones,
Thomas. Westmoreland, Joye and
Bryson, look promising.
Although the dozen courts on and
around the campus have been scenes
of much action here of late, they are
not in the. best of condition Mr
Thomas added, however, that the
courts would be put in excellent con
dition as soon as possible.
Although the Tennis Club is to be
reorganized, big things are being an
ticipated for this session. The tennis
players of the institution are urged to
.come out and try for places on the
teams. Freshmen are also invited to
conic out for practice.

ERSKINE COMES to meet the Game
cocks on University Field. The hour
is 4 o'clock. Be on time and bring
an inexhaustible supply of pep.
THE BIRDS are in the 'proverbial pink'
and are anxiously awaiting the hpur
of the initial brawl of the 1925 sea
son.
COACH BOCOCK'S men by virtue of
hard training this week have reached
good form, the polishing effect of
the training season having been put
on.
THE EXTREMELY warm weather has
been trying on the Bird machine, but
the 'players have withstood the heat
fine, being in the best of physical
conditiom.
LITTLE INFORMATION concerning
the strength of the Erskine Seceders
has reached the campus, but Coach
Galloway is sure to have a team im
bued with real fighting spirit.
WHILE THE Carolina supporters are
cheering at the Erskine-Carolina
game Saturday afternoon, Clemson
will be waging war with P. C. Ad
vance dope says Clemson and P. C.
fans are assured a real battle.
SECRET PRACTICES were held this
week by the Birds, including scrim
mages. The Frosh material furnish
ed oppositiop to varsity men on
Tuesday. The "Rats" crossed the
varsity goal line twice.
THE PRACTICE THURSDAY and
this afternoon served to place the
varsity in strong shape for the mor
row's game. Dope favors the locals,
but who knows if the dope is true?
OLD MEN on the campus say it has
been many a year since Carolina has
had such a bright future for its
Frosh team.
THINK OF IT fellows, almost a hun
dred candidates report daily for
Freshman football practice.
THE BIDDIES tried their hand at
scrimmaging Wednesday afternoon,
and demonstrated real Carolina fight
ing spirit.
FRESHMEN, if you haven't learned
those yells yet, tonight is a. fine time
to do so. Remember your support
to the team is important.
THE DOPESTERS have already begun
filling up the dope bucket. One gen
tlemahm has it that Clemsot tWill
emerge victor over P. C. by the nar
rowv margin of three points.
Freshmen for places on the team is
strong, and judging from Wednes
day's scrimmage the coaches will
have no easy task in selecting the
first team.
OTHER DOPESTrERS have gone far
ther than the opening games, some
statinig that the state championship
will be decided by Furman and the
Citadel Bulldogs.
BOTH THE CITADEL and Furman
are reported to have strong elevens
this year. But don't you think it's
a bit too early to state that they will
fight for the state rag?

Coach Stoney will make no state

work so far that the aggregation will
do credit to Carolina. The line will be
big and husky, he said, and we are now
trying to work out a smoooth back
field. The position in doubt the most
is that of quarterback, several men be

Jimmy Driver, director of student

that students must present their ath

The step has been taken in order
to avoid any difficulty at the gates and
will be strictly enforced. And "no
