UNIVERSITY"Y"
TO BE BROTHERS
OF 1926 FROSHS
REAL WELCOME PLANNED
Boyd to Have Charge of Wel
coming Homesick Biddies.
The University Y is working out a
unique plan for the iicoinitig Freshmen
this comiig year utntder Ihe direction of
lill Boyd. chairman. of tlc r-reshiiman
committee and vice-president of the V.
WIhen interviewed by the Gamecock re
porter, Ir. Boyd said that the idea was
to have an tpper classmat to be the big
brother for each Freshltan in order to)
get him to know Carolina, Carolina men
and Carolina traditic-nis. Each mai on
tile big committee will iave four fresh
men to whon ie is to be the friend and
couiselor. He is to help himi get iatric
tlated. tell him where and how to huv
hooks, clothes, furniture, etc. He will
also ielp) hiimi in the matter of knowing
what to do at college and what not to do.
Every year Carolina loses a good many
men in the first few weeks of school be
cause they are loi, esomie an(i -to one has
taken a personal interest in tieir welfare.
By the meais of the Freshian Y Coun
;;!, these men will lie looked after and
aicording to Mr. Boyd, they will not
have as much chance to get homesick as
they used to under the old system here
at Carolina. Not only does ionesick
ness send a good many me4in home bitt
ot'ur r<ks are sorely tiitimed each year
along about Christmas time by our men
who have not made the grade in college
becaise they (o not uiderstand the dif
fo.rence ')etween studying at college and
at High School. The committee will (10
all they can to make the men see the
difference betweeoi haviig some one to
make them study, study classes at High
school, etc. and they (o as they please
type of studying that is prevalent iere.
NIr. Boyd and Iis committee hope to
Fye many men to Carolina that way.
The Freshmen Y counselors will be
headed tilp by one good man in each build
ing. 'illis comillittee has not been select
ed yet but will probably be composed of
the following men: ). J. Jenkins, Legare
and Pinckney; Clyde WIhite, Rutledge
Iill JefTords. S. Hawkins, Elliott and
Harper; Moss, Thornwell; McFadden,
Wardlaw ; Burke and Gaston, Woodrow
and Pruitt in Burney. These men are
to have a short meeting at Mr. Bell's
house Friday night at 7:30 to lock over
lie situation anid to see wlat plans can be
made to give the Freslmen a real wel
rc.me next year.
Ti e committee hopes t, make plat.s
and select the mcwn on the larger com
mittee so that the Freshmen can be as
signled to the comi-tlttee ctunselors just
as soon1 as schlool openls next fall.
