CEAMS EVENLY MATCHED
Coach Cothran Prepares for the
North Carolinians by Groom
ing His Distance Men
At 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon
Coach Cothran's track men will match
up with the Davidson Wildcats~ for the
third meet of the season.
Judging from past track events be
tween the two institutions, the affair
should be a hair-splitter. When the
Garnet met the Red two years ago
the visitors won by a scant margin of
a couple of points. The lead, one or
two points, shifted from one side to
the other all through the meet and
not until the last event was the winner
decided.
Tomorrow afternoon Davis field will
see which of the two has improved
more in two years.
The recent match with Wofford and
Davidson's meet with them a week
later shows how nearly equal the
scores of both meets were exactly the
strength of the two teams is. The
same. Carolina showed improvement
over her Wofford records in the Fur
man meet last week.
Captain Gracey of the Davidson
s(uad is remembered for his work
here two years ago, a heavy, graceful
field man, he will give the Carolina
men some trouble. Captain Gaston, it
is certain, will rank high among the
point scores.
Coach Cothran, in preparation for
the Wildcats, has been working his
team regularly and has them in good
shape. He has been paying espe
cial attention to the distances and has
succeeded in cutting down the time
considerably on the two mile run. The
pole caulters, it is thought will have
an easy time.
Davidson arrived today and is at
the DeSoto Hotel.

THE NEWBERRY gane showed that
the Biddies are beginning to get
up speed. A few more games and
they will be worth comparing with
the old birds.
THE CO-ED baseball coach has ad
vised the girls to see the varsity
games as an inspiration for their
own playing.
EVEN the faculty play tennis now.
Every afternoon they come to the
courts in front of the Woman's
College. Looks as though there
are some former stars on the fac
ulty.
A TRACK MEET between Chicora,
Columbia High, and the Carolina
Co-eds is being planned. Richard
son, who holds the worlds' record
for the 50 yard dash and the Amer
ican record in hurdles, is in train
ing. McLure, former Winthrop
star, and Shaver and Hudson, Car
olina basket ball stars, are also
preparing for the meet.
YES, everybody is keyed up for the
wrestling match next week. The
Co-eds are betting on "Red Head
ed Pat."
THE GYM TEAMS are still at work.
New stunts have been added since
the next exhibition in the gym.
Last Friday night they went to
Chester. Today they go to Ridge
way. Coach Poole says that the
weather will make it necessary
that they quit practicing in a week
or two.
STILL there are track meets. Compe
tition between Davidson and Caro
lina, Saturday, ought to be close
enough to make it interesting.
NEXT WEEK the Co-ed swimmers gp
out to the lakes for practice. They
are already good in form for they
have been practicing in the Paci
fic Mill pool all winter. Coach
Crawford says there is plenty of
material for a good team.

CAROLINA - MARYLAND
The Carolina baseball team staits
the third week of their season Monday
by starting upon their annual tour
upstate. They play Newberry, P. C.,
Wofford, Furman, Clemson and Ers
kine. The team broke even in their
two games last week by winning one
and losing one. The standing is games
now is two-all.
One bad inning spelled defeat to the
Carolina Gamecock from the Univer
sity of Maryland yesterday afternoon
11 to 6.
Maryland came up to bat in the sixth
inning trailing the Carolina boys by
two points and Carolina came up in
her half immediately following, track
ing the visitors who had gained a solid
lead of five points.
Carolina had played well after Bar
ron had been tapped in the first and
had overcome a thre point lead with
Benny Smith on the hill.
But Benny wavered in the sixth
and yeilded an infield hit and two
passes. With the bases held firmer in
place by Maryland men perched on top
of each, Murray, foreign third base
man, destroyed the former roundness
of Bennie's pill by lambasting it to
centerfield for a triple.
