Co-education at Carolina has now
established itself as one of the major
parts of the University. Five years
ago there were only a mere handful
of Co-eds. Now it has passed the 300
mark. What caused this great in
crease? It can be readily expressed
in the following:
1.-The new Co-ed Building
2.-The value of a degree from the
University
3.-The attractive and practical cour
ses offered
4.-The ability of the faculty
And last but not least Dr. Melton.
At present there is only one dormi
tory with a residence as an annex,
for the girls, but it is hoped and be
lieved that in the near future the num
ber of buildings for the accomodation
increased . The total enrollment of
women for the session 1923-1924 was
192. Women enrolled for the first
semester of this session number 304.
Only five Women's colleges in the
State have a larger enrollment.
BEAUTIFUL DORMITORY.
There is no prettier and better equip
ped dormitory in the south. The girls
rooms are built in suites, consisting
of two bed rooms with a study be
tween. In this way the girls have
greater privacy since there is only one
girl to the room. Every convenience
is furnished, steam heat, running water
in each bed room, baths, and lights.
The main room of the building is
beautifully furnished with tasteful fur
nishings. There are long divans done
in velvet of softest rose brown; deep
cushioned chairs in shades that add a
rich tone to the room; rugs of blue
and mulberry furnish harmonizing
potes. At the end of the room is a
fire place and above it is flanked on
either side with hooded candles. Brass
andirons holding logs suggest the wood
fires that will be lighted to supple
ment the steam heat on frosty days.
A grand piano with a length of rose
brown velvet flung across its top,
stands invitingly open; a grandfathers
clock ticks quietly as though well plea
sed to have its lot cast among such
scenes of youth and loveliness.
The cafeteria which is down in the
basement is well equipped and beauti
fully furnished.

building, but more than matron, for

she is "mother" to every girl. She
has every attribute that mothers are
supposed to possess-sympathy and af

above all, tact. No lovier a character
could be found. In every respect the
dormitory is a home to the girls.
VARIETY OF COURSES.
The value of any degree received
from the University can never be es
timated. One is able to teach any
where. A diploma is recognized every
where and too it is a life-time license.
Even though a degree cannot be re
ceived, the benefits derived from the
soCial and literary life are so marked
that they last through life. The Co
eds are proving a valuable asset to the
staff of the various publications, and
it has been found that a larger percent
age of the contributions to the college
magazine. The Carolinian, are made
by the women students.
There is no faculty of this size in
the south that could surpass the ability
of the faculty of the University. The
degrees conferred upon them are as
high as can be obtained.
Besides the highest possible instruc
tion in Commerce, Law, Elngineering,
Journalism and other special courses,
which the modern woman is now seek
ing, the Co-ed may select any variety
of course in arts and sciences.
The courses offered in music, art and
literature are the subjects most sought.
here at the University girls are able to
learn these studies. Attractive cour
ses in music and dramatic are are of
fered. It is a great opportunity for
those who possess talents in either of
these three lines to learn to use them
and to be able to present them to
others. A Co-ed Glee Club has been
organized, a well equipped club, which
shows that small talents can be de
veloped. This club has made several
trips to cities in the state and has met
with high approval and praise. The
dramatic art classes are very benefi
cial. There are classes in which the
theories of play production are stu
dies and classes in which the real pro
duction itself is practiced. By these
methods girls are taught how to pro
duce the simplest play most success
fully. Courses in Greek, Roman, Ger
man. French, English, and American
Literature of other nations. This
gives one the opportunity to broaden
ones mind and not be confined in our
knowledge to the literature of our
country.
Numbers of women in the past few
years have enrolled in the schools of
Law and Commerce. In this day of
specialization, woman must prepare
herself for a struggle in the World
of Business if she, as many do, wish
to persue a career. The School of
Journalism seems to be a favorite and

ATHLETIC INTERESTS
The great worth of physical devel
opment is unspeakable, Basketball,
regular gymnastics, sfimming, base
ball and gym teams are offered and
enjoyed very much. Miss Lucile God
bolt the world's champion is the wo
man instructor.
A strong basket ball team has been
organized and just recently they have
departed for an extended tour, play
ing various college teams in Virginia.
A. special gym team has been organ
ized comprising acrobats and "great

DR. MELTON'S WORK
Dr. Melton is a man of the highest
ideals and standards; a man whose
life and work exemplifies a real gen
tleman. He is also a man of vision,
of* great breadth, aggressiveness and
a keen appreciation of those who are
struggling to gain any education, for
he himself realizes full well what
fighting' the upward march means.
One of the first things Dr. Melton
did at the University was to estab
lish and house the Young Women's
Christian Association.
The daughters of Carolina feel that
they are as much a part of this in
stitution as her sons, and they are
vitally interested in every movement
which promotes the welfare of their
Alma Mater and the State.
