Gamecocks Ove
By Playing Se
Wins Scored Against Clemson
and Charleston-Defeated
By Furman and Citadel
Last fall, in a football game in Orange
burg, Mr. Teddy Weeks of The Citadel,
kicked a field goal against Carolina fin
the first half, which blow, the Game-I
cocks did not accept in the manner ex
pected, but came back in the second half
and straightway made two touchdowns.
Tuesday night in a basketball game,
at the Carolina gym, the samj Mr.
Weeks scored first on a goal only to ex
perience again a comeback which the
Citadel never headed and which onded!
with Carolina k;ading by three points,
32-29.
But it was a fight. One of those games
in which every point means a scrap. Both
the Bulldogs and the Gamecocks were
determined to win-one to continue an
un3roken string of victories and on( to
come out of a slump that has worried it
for the last few games. Roland and
Oliver, who struggled steadily during
three days with oak trees as weapons,
fought longer but not as fierc<.y as the
Gamecock and the Bulldog.
The whole Carolina team battled as
one man, but fairly; there being very
few fouls committed by either team.
Jack Wright led the scorers and exhibt.
ed some spectacular dribbling and shoot
ing. Bill Rogers was always in the!
thick of the fight and his passing was
hard and true. Seideman and Skipp(r
McSwain, were the bulwark of Caroli
na's crack defensive play. Lillard and
Swink played consistently at center'
and outjumped their opponent. Caro,.
na's playing was characterizod by hard,
accurate passing.
Citadel also fought with might and
main and their combination of Weeks,
Douglas and Saunders worked sensa
tionally. The versatile Weeks was the
Bulldog's ace-in-the-hold and he lived up
to the reputation he had already made
for himself. Douglas and Samnders wer-e
sure shots but were too closely guarded;
to do much.
The greatest crowd that has ever wit
nessed a basketball game on the Caro-.
lina floor was present for this battle.
The walls seemed hung with spectators.
And throughout the contest, they follow
ed intensely. WVhen they shouted, the
din was defeaninig and then at times,
absorbed in the, game, they were silent:
and still.

Pulling away to a 5 point lead in the
finial minutes of the game after playing
the Gamncks ont about equal terms
throughout the first part, Furman's Pur
pIe Hurricane lbasketball team won Fri
dlay uight by a score of 30 to 25.
The Gamecock team did ntot disp4lay
the bri-lliant passing attack which made
them respected in previous games. Pro
bably the week of idkaiess caused by ex
aminiations had much to do wvith it.
Two Gamecocks stood out however, the
goal shooting of Jack Wright and the
reliable guarding of Silas Seideman.
Their performnances of the ev<nmg were
of high orde:.
Galloway wvas Furman's best bet and
his accurate1 passing greatly aided his
team in piercinig Carolina's defense.
Captain Ro.hertson lead the purple team

A GAMECOCK may be down, but he
is nover out. This, the Carolina
basketeers proved last Tuesday night
to the satisfaction of hundreds of
fanls, who sdv4 them conquer the
worithy Citadel crew. Before this,
the Gamecocks had not been playing
th( game expected of them or the
kind they wanted tq play against a
couple of teams. But in the Citadel
contest, they opened r.p and gave all
they had. They "came out of it" and
regained the old Bird's prestigt in
the cage world. It was a game the
fans will always remember.
WIlEN MR. JOSEPH HINES fired
that volley from his .32 signifying
that the game was over, bedlam broke
loos<, The tension that held the
crowd through the game was sud
denly broken. Carolina shouted far
ityto the night and the old chapel bell
rang joyously.
NOV WITH THIS "Bulldog" tonic in
their blood, the Gamecock swings
northward to contend with some of
the strongest teams in the South and
East. H(' will gain a lot of expe
rience by inspecting the machinery
of champioiship teams, which will
help him in polishing up his own
play by March 4th, the date of the
S. I. C. Tournament.
L'OACH BOCOCK is to be thanked and
congratulated. He has worked hard
in teaching his men th( priiciples of
modern basketball. He had good
material-a tall, fast, rangy crew,
which he has worked into a unified
comination functioning as one play
er. It will be quite a feather in his
cap to have a successful nortitOn
trip, playing teams which are the
acknowledged leaders of their sec
tions.
''HF* BIDDIKS are making an impor
tant trip among the colleges up-state
minus their star cap)tain, Holcombe.
Tlhd results of this trip 1s of grea't
importance because on them depend
the Bidldies chan1ces of bringi-ng the
third consecutive freshman basket
ball State championship to the Univ
ersity.
IT IS INDEED a pkasure to note the
many imp)rovemeI,ts being made in
the co-ed basketball squadl this year.
The Pullets do not try to strike the
graceful poses of Ruth St. D)enis,
but their game is fast and full of
fight. TlhOre is some good material
in the squad, capable of being made
into a fine 'team.
THE CO-EDS are also going in for
various other branches of sport. Al
ready, a gym team is at practice, and(
a track and baseball team is planned
A PlI.;A has been sent out b)y the cap
taini of the track team for men tc
conme out for the squad. Coach Coth
ran has said definitely that he will
give any new man a good tryout and
will help him in training as much am
possible. There are a number of
men wvho dto not return from lasi
year's squad and their places ar<
open for contestants.
