NW GAMtITALLAD - BY -GYMNASTIC SCHOOL Can Now Play HandbalL Those students of the University who are interested in athletics will be very glad to learn that the game of handball is soon to be introduced at Carolina by the department of gym nastics. Six splendid courts are be ing layed off in front of Stewards Hall, on lower Main Street. These six courts will be enough to accommodate almost one hundred players in one afternoon, each set of four playing for one hour. This game, though quite new to the University, is somewhat of an old game. It is a game that is played at all the large universities and one in which much interest is taken. Hand ball, originally, is an Irish game but on account of its increasing popu larity, it is fast becoming recognized as one of America's leading outdoor sports. The game is played somewhat on the same order as tennis. Instead of using racquets, however, one uses his hands with which to bat the ball. The ball used is made of soit rubber with out the canvass covering as that on common tennis balls. The game may be played in either singles or doubles, that is, by either two or four players. The scoring is done by the serving side. The total number of points is twenty-one, eleven, or fifteen, twenty one being the number generally used. The number of points to be used is decided upon by the contestants. Carolina's champion player is Jack Alliston, who was one of the leading stars at Syracuse University. "Jack" is also our most famous boxer and without doubt one of the best all round athletes in the state. The first admission game will be 26, at four o'clock. "LET'S PLAY A GAME OF HAND BALL." -U.s.c. BARS WEARING LETTERS. (Brigam Young University) Last Wednesday evening the stu dent body council passed a by-law prohibiting t",# wearing of letters other than the official "Y." on the campus, on regular school days. The action does not include Saturdays and Sun days. This action was taken as the result of the great number of these letters which are being exhibited on the cam pus. The "Y" is the official letter of the school and should not be "otc ed to run competition with letters of other schools in being seen. This ac tion was deemed necessary to give the "Y" the proper honor value which it should have. Under present circuni stances "Y" men are not easily recog nized or distinguished from other ho nor men. ----.s.c. WORTH HIS SALT. C. Station, New York City. ONE-LEGGED MARVEL ENJOYS MANY SPORTS John Beaton, a freshman at Ohio State University, has only one leg, yet he participates in ten different sports. He can pole-vault 7 feet 3 inches, and holds a medal for second place in a half-mile swim. He has played right tackle in the football team, and guard in basketball. He wrestles, boxes, skates on ice and on roller skates. He rides a motor-cycle or bicycle and drives an automobile, plays tennis and golf 6bove the aver age, and can even dance. WOMEN STUDENTS AT IOWA LAW RANK HIGH Women students in the college of Law at the University of Iowa had higher averages for the second sem' ester of the last school year than did the men, according to figures recent ly announced. Members of Kappa Beta 'Pi, law sorority, led with the higher averages for the second sem the men's organizations, followedby Gamma Eta, Delta Theta Phi and Al pha Delta. - U.S.C. IOWA SECURES NOTED PROFESSOR OF DEBATE One of the most prominent teachers of debate and argumentation in this country has just been added to the present staff of the University of Iowa speech department as an associate pro fessor, according to announcement. He is Albert Craig Baird, professor of argur-.entation at Bates college, Lew iston Maine, who is given credit as the instigator of the present interest in and growth of international debat ing. He will join the University of Iowa faculty in September of this year. Further distinction has come to Pro fessor Baird as the only man who has ever taken American teams abroad to meet Oxford University. He has done this for the past two years and is plan ning to make another trip this year. He is said to b)e the man wvho started British-American debating relations. ---U.S.c. Co-eds at Wisconsin U have gone on record opposing drinking by men stu dents b)ut refuse to ostracize those who do show a fondness for the cup that cheers. University of North Carolina has a 62 year old student Judge Winston, who decided to go through college again. He is now a junior. Oglethorpe University in Georgia has a ten-year old student. 56,000 American College students studied Greek or Latin last year. Charles T. Wrightson of Oregon Ag riculture College flew to school in an aeroplane and is paying his way thru college by taking up passengers in his machine during spare time.
