THIS, T HE LAST ISSUE
WELL 11111
With this issue the present staff passes
the banner on to other hands. We have
worked, we have learned much, we have
enjoyed it.
We would not, however, say watery
goodbyes and sad farewells for no one
is going anywhere.
The ones who are not on the new staff
know that any time they find that they
have a "hankering" to do newspaper
work, they will gladly, and only too
gladly be given assignments.
The staff would like in passing out to
thank the following: J. A. Henry, W.
L. Crocker, Fred Minshall, Ellen Hough.
D. S. Westberry, Tom McCutchen, H.
H. Hentz, Arthur Cornwell, Emily
Hughes, Delle Evans, Harold DeLorme.
D. -1. .argle. Dr. W. W. Ball, Dr. E.
L. Green, and the others who have con
tributed from time to time.
That's all.

BULL-ITS VIRTUES AND ITS
VICES
There are several forms of student
activities which do not receive the at
tention that they merit, and without a
doubt the most noteworthy of these is
that much maligned art know in the
vernacular as "bull" shooting." It ex
ists undler a great variety of guises
and seemis to flourish everywhere, al
though none can deny that there are
more cabbages than carnations.
Amnong the chief sponsoring institui
tions are the literary societies, the class
rooms, and the student body meeting..
The first of these leads by a large
score. In these August (often hotter)
assemblages we find on one side ar
gumentative hairs split into well defin
ed portions of nothing, and on the
other a silvery effluvium of silken ver
bosity which would draw tears from an
iron Apache on the death of his ene
my. Here, if a member fails to acquire
a ball-bearing tongue and an intre
pitude of hard boiled carborundum,
it is his own fault and the Lord help
himn.
In the d~ass room the situation is rath
er di-fferent, although many similar
principles are involved. Trhere is very
little encouragement iii mathematics and
science, but in History, English, and
some educations-they are regular gar
den plots for the flower (or vegetable)
of "bull." There is no inte.muon to in
siuate that these subjects do not re
quire work, oh, far from it I But the
spinner of words always has the advan
tage. How many ideas of vaporous con
sistency have been mAde to burn likc
the scriptural pillar of fire by. the magic
of words will never be known. The
professors do not keep a record. For
surely they are not deceived. It is mere
ly that they are awed, overwhelnied by
the display of ignorance endowed with
such potency, such irrefutable convine.
ingness, such logical absurdity.
Now, in the student body meetings
again there is another plant. In its col
orful sporadicity and high procreative
qualities it resembles the red poppy
which blooms suddenly and spreads rap
idly, the pathological effect of which is
first intense stimulation and excitement.
then a profound torpor and often a state
of coma. Affairs of vast importance
are handled in a manner which usually
makes it incomprehensible to the voter.
Matters of small moment often cost a
great deal of time and effort. But
"buIl" is king and can be overcome
only by himself.
The medium in which the airy art at
tains its most complete and unobstruc
ted expression is that extremely flexible
congress known as the "bull session."
Whether convened in a cafe or a cam
pus room, this vagrant body has con
summated the most debased and the
most exalted of human traits. Anec
dotes that would make a drunken Nero
blush with shame are narrated with un
shrinking levity. The extremities of
the universe and the profundities of
theological dogmas are disposed of 'y

The wise bird took 'em as he went.
"Can't I get off tomorrow, Boss, for a
wedding?"
"Do you have to go?"
"I'd like to-I'm the bridegroom."
Speaking of the Coolidge reserve, a
reporter attempted an interview, "Do you
wish to say anything about prohibition?"
was the first question.
"No."
"About the Farm bloc?"
"No."
"About the World Court?"
"No."
The reporter turned to go. "By the
