TR-EE HOURS ENJOYED AT HOE OF MR. KOHN MEETING. OF PRESS CLUE Arthur Cormwe, Chester, Senio' in Jpurnalnm School, Elected Presdent for Next Term There was a pleasant time for all at the meeting of the University Press Club which spent three hours at the home of August Kohn on the night of the fifteenth. It was an evening full. Besides the main speech, the election of officers for next term was a feature of the occasion. Arthur Cornwell, Vice-President for this term, was elected president by acclamation. Cornwell is from Chester and will complete this year the course in Jour nalism offered by the University. As vice-president he has arranged pro grams which were thoroughly enjoy ed; adding at times his own voice to the many others which have entertain ed at the monthly meetings. Other officers elected were: W. 4.. Croker, vice-president; Ellen Hough, secretary and treasurer; Emily Hughes and C. B. Williams, executive coi mittee. The talk of the evening given by Professor Yates Snowden, was on ear ly South Confina Newspapers. The history professor had with hii filed letters which men connected with the beginnings of the state's country Jour nalism, had written in answer to a questionaire sent out by him. Sone counties he had himself written up and published but many have yet to find a scribe. Prof. Snowden expressed the hope that the subject would be taken by someone for a master's thesis and de veloped to its full possibilities. Short talks were made by Mr. Kohn), Dr. W. W. Ball and by Captain Rip ley, a house guest of Dr. Ball. After the business meeting the meni bers were invited into the drawing room and enjoyed a social hour. Ar thur Cornwell sang two solos, accom panied by Wilbur Zeigler. M. K. Walsh also sang, accompanying him self on the guitar. Misses Lillie Ba ker and Ellen Hough played three ukelele selections, assisted by Miss El len Chaplin at the piano. Miss Emily Jay Hughes gave several readings. The guests were then invited into the din ing room by Mrs. Henning, daughter of Col. Kohn, where refreshments were served. Music and dancing were enjoyed until a late hour. -U.s.c. ANNA SWINDELL NEW CHIEF FOR CAROLINIAI At a joint imeeting of the four liter ary societies after chapel Friday morn ing, 'Anna Swindell of Columbia, a junior in the academic school. wvas elected editor of the Carolinian for the next term. Miss Swindell has beeni on the staff of the Carolinian for the last two years. James H-amlomnd Black who has been the editor-in-chief for the first term has had a very successful tei-m. His January number, to appear next week will be his last issue. Miss Swvin dell is assistant editor for this issue. She has been a regular contributor sinice she has come to Carolina. Dur ing her year at Converse Miss Swin dell wvas also interested in the college publication, the Concept. JIM GLENN CAPTURES .CAMPUS PONG CROWN Wins After Hard Match The famou., ping pong tournament of the year, after taking the week before Christmas and some time since, has finally comne to an end with Glenn as champion of the University. Glenn and had to play Billie Coleman for the title. The game was a strenuous one, both players having to call for time otut frequently to rest. After slamming hte ball recklessly several times, Glena had to call for a rubber to message his arm before he could continue. He played his game fierce ly through and deserves the honor which he has won, as the Ping Pong Champion of the University. FLU SEEMS POPULAR CRAZE AT IMY CO-ED HAS THE MUMPS Mrs. Madden Has 25 Victims to Adninister Daily Doses of "Pluto" Stick-This seems to be "fraternity weather" Well--Howzat? Sick-Everyone has the grippe. Such seems to be the case at the University Infirmary for information gathered from the sick wards late Thursday night indicate that of the 25 patients now under treatment 24 have the grippe or flu. The other pa tient Miss Thelma Burgess has the iumps but is doing nicely. None of the sick ones have a dange rous attack but'mostly bad colds and attendant ills from the bad weather of the few days past. 16 of the patients in the infirmary are men and the other nine co-eds, a list of those who are confined to the wards are: Misses Lucy Flowers, Thelma Bur gess. Martha l,oria Montenergro. Liz zie Gary Craddock, Iola Roberts, Ruth 1,angfelder. Elbertine Durr, Kitty Brant and Edna Carson. The Eds are: H. B. Barnhill, T. A. Wofford, A. T. Morrison, A. A. BAPTIST STUDENTS OF STATE MEET AT HARTSVILLE The conference of the Baptist stu dlents of South Carolina, representing colleges and high schools will meet at Coker college February 13, 14, and 15. The girls will be entertained at Coker college, and the young men will be entertained in the town. A large delegation is expected, and a strong program is being prepared.
