WAITING FOR WHAT?
Are you sitting on your heels waiting
till the Band Wagon has passed? With
the Roddey Medal debate disposed of
and the Wi'liam and Mary-North Caro
lina-South Caroaina deba-te scheduled
for the week after Exams the forsenic
program of the University will soon be
well under way. Following intervals of
about a month each will be three other
triangular intero4legiate debates and
lastly the intra-mural debate between
the Clariosophic and Euphradian Socie
ties. The question which must present
itself to the student who is at all in
terested in public speaking must be "who
will represent the University in these
contests ?4'
Of the four triangular debates the first
three are open to the student body at
large while the fourth-known as the
little triangle-is open only to under
graduates. This arrangement makes it
possible to encourage undergraduate
speakers who will have acquired more
experince by the close of the school
year.
Debating at Carolina has been at
tempted by only a few men and they
are for the most part graduates. These
men received their training while un
dergraduates at the University. They
and others who have graduated found the
most valuable preparation in competing
against others in the preliminaries for
:intercollegiate dlebates.
Unfortunately there are at present
very few new men trying out for places
on the triangles. This condition may
be attributed in part natural inertia
but in a good part to a' natural hesitancy
against competing against men who han
made their debating letter. But wvhy?
These men made their letter against
the same odds. Competion with these
men while i-f not bringing immediate
success will give you polish, experience,
and style that will enable you to worthi
ly succeed them. Besides there is no
such thing as "scrubs" in debating. If
ypou are good and bring it out with
practice you can land a berth on the
team.
The falsest of fallacious reasoning is
to wait until the present leaders have
gone and then succeed to their posi
tions. You are wasting an opportunity
to learn from them, you are handicap
ping yourself by niot testing your mettle
against the best, and oftentimes deny
ing yourself a chance to make good now.
South Carolina University earned an
enviable reputation last year and has
always stood high in forensic. She has
done so because men have developed
themselves by intra-mural competition
and preliminaries and then gone forth to
conquer the outsiders. The. new blood
of the campus should take up 'the fight
and try their strength in the forthcoming
debates.
DR E. W. SIKES
We believe that the selection of Dr.
E. W. Sikes for the presidency of Clem
son' is well justified and gladly wel
come him into the company of state col
leges. The undergraduate thinks first
of the intercollegiate relationships rather
than of curricula, administration and ex
pansion (however fundamental these may
be), and we are sure that under him
a wholesome and friendly rivalry will
be maintained. The other departments
of the school whose affairs he is to ad
minister will not receive less attention.
Dr. Sikes' lines have fallen particular
ly in the field of the academic, which is
a sphere quite distinct from that creat
ed by the demands of the industrial era
in which we live; but we believe that he
is bringing to Clemson a definite con
tribution. If the same business admin
istration so efficient in its operation, if
the the magnification of the practical
arts, if the virtue of ability and train
ing in the utilities-if these phases are
to be extended as well as supplemented
by a corresponding enhancment of other
divions in the coklege affairs-then
Dr. Sikes is to speed Clemson on its
mission to the state.
Clemson is in her formative years.
Her ultimate wellrounded development

All men are made of common clay I
But we are not;
All men are false we gladly say;
But we are not.
We're weak and young, Pure through
and through.
And petting parties will never do,
You may surmise we're kidding you,
But we are not.
All men break moral laws
- But we do not.
They're full 'o bunk, and little flaws;
But we are not.
A midnight ride we wouldn't dare,
Perhaps they wouldn't treat us square
You'd think from this it isn't fair,
And it is not.
They wish for times we all must know;
And, so do we,
You'd think from this that we are best,
And it may be so until a test.
All men are full of Bull, and, yes,
So are we.
