Here are some interesting statistics
r the close observer on University of
th Carolina football records. These
rds were kept for all time begin
with the season of 1894. Thus
lina has put teams on the field for
past 31 years. As intercollegiate
rts were barred in 1906 we have a
ying record of 30 years.
During this time the Gamecocks have
yed 209 football games, of which we
ye the complete record with the ex
ption of the North Carolina and Vir
nia games of 1914 (Which the scribe
I endeavor to locate before the next
ticle of this series.) Of these games
arolina won 101, tied 8 and lost 95
Ith two unaccounted for. One game
as forfeited.
In 207 football games Carolina scor
1 2554 points to the opponents 1953,
,nng the Birds a majority of 601
>ints, this includes the opponents score
forfeited games.
The tied games were : 1905-Carolina

1912-Carolina 6, N. C. 6; 1915-Car

BASKETBALL PROSPECTS
APPEAR BRIGHT-COACHES
To Take Northern Trip Early in
February
Basketball prospects at Carolina are
coming along splendidly according to re
ports from J. G. Driver, Branch Bocock
and Burnett Stoney. Carolina this year
will have the best cage team seen here
in many seasons.
The coaches do not wish to make any
definite announcements at this time due
to developments except to say that there
is an abundance of good material.
The schedule has not been announced
definitely as yet, the only playing dates
given out for publication is the northern
trip, The Gamecocks are t6 meet the
University of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill on Thursday, February 12, on the
13th N. C. State is met in Raleigh and
on Saturday, the Birds encounter the
Navy team at Annapolis, Md. A rest is
taken over Sunday the 15th. On the
16th, Carolina battles Maryland at Col
lege Park, Md., and begin the swing
homeward. On Tuesday, they are to
meet Catholic at Washington, D. C. and
on the following day will close the trip
with a game at Charlottesville, Va., with
the University of Virginia.
Only two of these teams were met
last year: North Carolina, champs of
S.I.C., gave the Gamecocks a decisive
beating and the Birdsl trimmed State in
an extra period of play.

The Rose Mary Tea Room of Colum
bia feted the University football team
with an informal dinner Tuesday evening
in recognition of their excellent work
during the season just past.
Speeches were "conspicuously absent!'
(he food being the main business of the
session. The varsity men, coaches and
managers were present at one of the
most delightful informal affairs given
in honor of the Birds.

COURIER THINKS LONG
IS CAPABLE LEADER
1. C.'s Record Given by Charleston
Paper-Praiie Selection
The following clipping from the Char
leston "News and Courier" relative to
J. C. Long, captain elect of the 1925
Gamecock football machine, may prove
f interest to Carolina students. It was
written by C. D. Weimer, sporting edi
tor of the paper from the City-by-the
Sea:
"Another Charleston boy has been hon
ored. J. C. Long will captain the Car
Dlina Gamecocks in 1925. Long is a for
mer Bantam and will be playing his third
season on the University eleven. Last
year, Long played a splendid game. This
season he was unable to take part in the
early games on account of an injury but
came through handsomely against Fur
man and other teams. Long is the sec
ond boy in two years from Charleston
to captain the Gamecocks, Frankie Meyer
being the retiring leader of the Birds.
Long was a star member of the old Ban
tams, although he graduated before they
went to Peabody. He did, however,
have a large part in beating Peabody in
Charleston.
"Here is an example of how 'J. C.'
feels about a game. It was his last game
for the Bantams, against Chester for the
state championship at Columbia. Ches
ter had started a drive down the field.
They kept going. Using psychology,
Prause took Long out and sent in a sub
stitute. It was no more Long's fault
than others that the drive was being
made, but Long was rated as one of the
very best linesmen, so the others knew
they would not last long unless that
drive was stopped It was stopped
At the end of the quarter Long
went back into the game and play
ed ferociously. He was a shining light.
But that did not satisfy him. On the
way home tears could be seen edging out
of his eyes every now and then. He felt
that to even be taken out of the game
was awful. Long loves to play football
and he will make Carolina a 'fighting
captain."
