C.'s Record Given by Charleston Paper-Praiie Selection The following clipping from the Char leston "News and Courier" relative to J. C. Long, captain elect of the 1925 Gamecock football machine, may prove f interest to Carolina students. It was written by C. D. Weimer, sporting edi tor of the paper from the City-by-the Sea: "Another Charleston boy has been hon ored. J. C. Long will captain the Car Dlina Gamecocks in 1925. Long is a for mer Bantam and will be playing his third season on the University eleven. Last year, Long played a splendid game. This season he was unable to take part in the early games on account of an injury but came through handsomely against Fur man and other teams. Long is the sec ond boy in two years from Charleston to captain the Gamecocks, Frankie Meyer being the retiring leader of the Birds. Long was a star member of the old Ban tams, although he graduated before they went to Peabody. He did, however, have a large part in beating Peabody in Charleston. "Here is an example of how 'J. C.' feels about a game. It was his last game for the Bantams, against Chester for the state championship at Columbia. Ches ter had started a drive down the field. They kept going. Using psychology, Prause took Long out and sent in a sub stitute. It was no more Long's fault than others that the drive was being made, but Long was rated as one of the very best linesmen, so the others knew they would not last long unless that drive was stopped It was stopped At the end of the quarter Long went back into the game and play ed ferociously. He was a shining light. But that did not satisfy him. On the way home tears could be seen edging out of his eyes every now and then. He felt that to even be taken out of the game was awful. Long loves to play football and he will make Carolina a 'fighting captain." -u.s.c.
