Carolina Gamet P. C. Blui BACK IN THE "BIG THREE" Birds Use Varied Attack And And Full Squad in Friday's Game CAROLINA 29, P. C. 0. Revenge is sweet and the old Gamecock of South Carolina drank deeply when they de feated the Blue Stockings from Pres byteriani Cpllege here Friday. .Once again has Carolina wrested her place 'u the "Big Three" back from the us urper who sprung a surprise last sea son to defeat the proud old Bird 7-3. The most impressive feature of the victorious clan today was the winning spirit, so essential to every winning foot ball team, for the material is but little better than that which Coach Metzger has had in other years. However, it is plainly evident that wonderful transfor mation has come over the team since the- coach has been given full reign ane' has not had to contend with out side interferrence. The eleven perform ed as an unit, even though substitutions were frequently made and the line-up changed about as often as a woman's mind. SCORE AN INJUSTICE. The Blue Stockings fought valiently, as every Walter Johnson team has been known to do, but they were simply unequal to Carolina prowess and strength. However, the score is aninj ustice to the fighting game played by each team, for Carolina was aided to two of the four touchdowns by decisive breaks. On the other hand, Carolina's defense against line plays was well nigh impenetrable and the only chance P. C. had of scoring was by the oveihead game, but the aerial thrusts were well covered by the Game cocks. Once in the first period the visi tcis threatened goal when a pass from Griffith landed in the arms of Moore on the seven-yard line, but the youthful end, nervous and uncertain of himself, sank to his knees and the ball grounded. Afterwards P. C. had less than a ghost of a chance and gained but twelve yards during the afternoon, as compared with a loss of eighteen yards. Not a single first down was registered, other than the two given by five-yard penalties when Carolina was off side. Carolina earned three first downs in the first period, six in the second, three in the third andl six in the fourth, a total of eighteen, including three touch downs from the line of scrimmage. Another touchdown was registered when Bartell recovered a punt and crossed the goal. It appeared to this correspondent that the ball should have been given to P. C., for it did look as if a P. C. player had touched the oval before a Carolina man fell on the rolling oval. USED WHOLE SQUAD. Carolina gained 55 yards from scrim mage in the first period and 92 yard in the second and 30 in the second half, when mostly substitutes were used. Every man on the Garnet and Black squad was given a chanice, and P. C. used most of its reserves in the game, but by force of necessity. The visitors fought to the last ditch and even though injured car ried on until the final whistle. Those who care for statistics with their meals will be interested to know that Carolina completed four forward passes for 17, 13, 1 5, and 12 yards, res pectively, and that six fell incomplete, while but one was intercepted. 1'. C., had four aerial flips grounded and two intercepted. Carolina 'punted tjhirtieen times for an average distance of 43 1-2 yards, ranging fro m12 to 55 yards on eaich boot. Boatwright's toe wvas never at its best. Thue short kick was due to a partial block and free ball, recovered by P. C., in midfield. The Presbyterians punted fourteen times for an average distance of 36 yards, Warner and Grif fith lifting the spirals. ne of Wr...r.. 'OR 2 OF ALL SORTS S. W. Eichel, Editor ,ocks Beat , Stockings 29-0 punts soared over the safety man and rolled for a net distance of 75 yards, to boost the general average. For one quarter P. C. had eleven football players as good as any in the state, but they simply could not stand up under tile pressure and the heat from blistering sun. It was straw hat weather and spectators were seen fan ning with their cards. A crowd extimat ed at 3,500 found thrills from beginning to end, and not until the last period when P. C. was hopelessly outclassed did the game seem to drag. NO OFFENSE. The visitors had not the semblance of an offense, other than the forward pass, and the receivers were too well covered by Carolina's fleet backs and ends to make this weapon dangerous. The Birds were unable to make long spectacular gains, but Brice, a fast charging back, could nearly always be counted upon for consistent gains, par ticularly in the second and fourth per iods. Frankie Meyer, a rather numbered figure against North Carolina State last Sauturday, showed old time form this afternoon and was like an evil spirit. all over the field. P. C.'s ends, particu larly Moore, were blocked out time and again. The Gamecocks employed to ad vantage a delayed buck from a short dou be pass, and also gained substantial yardage on drives off tackle. - However, Carolina's driving power cannot measure up to the potential stt ength of its forward passing attack. The Gamecocks ran nearly all their plays this afternoon from one formation and the passing system used was sim ply an elementary form of the complicat ed attack that can be evolved from the effective formations in Carolina's re pertory. LAVAL A WITNESS. Coach Laval, of Furman, and Assis tant Coach May, of Clemson, watched the game and it was evident that the Gamecocks were concealing as ,nuch of their stuff as posible. The use of many substitutes also disorganized team play to an extent, but the varsity show ed machine-like precision. The visitors' secondary defense per formed heroically. The middle of the P C. line also held well, until exhausted fr onm slheer weariness. Trhe visitors sim 1ply could not cope with Carolina's pass mng game. Shortly after the beginning of the second period, ,the Gameoocks scored tirst when Boatwright kicked a field goal from placement from the 22 yard line Carolina had taken possession of the ball by intercepting a forward pass on its owni 36 yard line. Three succes sive first downs, including a pass, put the Birds on the 22 yard line at the be ginning of the second period. Then it appeared that the Blue Stockings had stiffened, Boatwright dropped back and b)ooted the bail between the uprights, over the cross bar.. BRICE A STAR. A short punt put Carolina in scoring position again and a first down, com. binied with a long pass of Brice to right, put the ball within two yards of goal. Brice went over for the touchdown, Brice was the puts'tantiing ,offedsive star and the largest ground gainer of the day. He proved to be of triple threat, in passing, punting and running, and also is an excellent catcher of pass-. es. At the end of the half two first dlowns, negotiated mainly by the hefty plung,s of Brice, and a 12-yard for ward pass of Brice to Jazz placed Caro lina in scoring position on P. C.'s eight yard line, but time was called as the Gamecocks lined up for the third down. The next touchdown resulted from *t tough break for the Blue Hose, soon af ter the third period opened. On a punt Wilson attempted for a shoe string catch andl the ball scooted out from -II TODAY'S HERO Blake Edmunds, RG under him. Swink was down the field and blocked Wilson out of the play. Bartell recovered the vagrant ball as ht ran across the last white chalked line. This was the play over which there. was some doubt as to whether Wilson had touched the pigskin. However, Carolina was Ideniqd a touchdown a few minutes later when, after gaining possession of the ball in advantageous position, she drove to the two-yard line. Jeffords had just been sent in to the fray and on his fourth trial at the line he fumbled a low, bad pass from Dukes at center. P. C. re covered the ball. The Stockings at tempted to punt out of danger and the Gamecocks agai4n got hold of the ball, this time on P. C.'s 28-yard line. Two first downs were registered in quick suc cession on line plays and Jazz plunged through for the score. Trhe last touch (down followed a long aerial flip and Boatwvright's end swveep of about ten yards. The entire Carolina line played ef fectively, while Berry and McLauren and Kirven stood out in the center of the visitors' b)reastworks. The light P. C. backs were unable to get started, as their interference was always wiped out and three or four tackles swarmed around each P. C. ball carrier. Another pass -was inoomplete, Jeffords' fdick was blocked by Finklea and went out af. bounds.going to Clemson on its own 471 yard line. Walker made five yards off tackle. Walker added three at the center of the line. Williams made it first down on Carolina's 45 yard line. Wil liams failed. Walker too a yard. Rob inson lost six on an attempted end run. Robinson punted to Wright on Carolina's 22 yard line. The period ended here. Score end third period: Carolina 3; Clemson 0. Fourts Period, Carolina-Clelmson Boatwright gained four on a short end run. Boatwright took three. Brice lost three. Harmon fumbled Jeffords kick and Boyd recovered for Carolina on the 33 yard line. Brice bucked four through the center of the line. Boat wright failed to gain. , but Clemson was offside and Carolina held the ball first d(wn on the 22 yard line. Brice fail ed to gain. Leightsey intercepted a pass on the 22 yard line. Williams made a yard in a buck. Walker added three. Robinson kicked to Jeffords on Caro lina's 38 yard line. Brice got a yard over guard. Boatwright failed to gain on a double pass. Jeffords kicked to Harmon on Clemson's 20 yard line. Wal ker bucked two yards. Robinson made two yards. A long pass grounded. Robin sion kicked over the goal line. Carolina's ball on 20 yard line. Since the player was taken out the penalty for excessive time out was not applied. Brice failed to gain. Wray went in for Roy. The game endedl as Brice broke through the line for a gain of six yards. C., October 17.-S ing two touchdowns in the first minutes of play, one of them after n-inute, and punctuating the activities the afternoon with five crossings of last white mark, the reserves of University of South Carolina, Fri afternoon defeated Carlisle Fi School, 33 to 13. The first touchdown came after B ston ran back to the ten yard line a short punt and then took the across the goal line. He also ki goal. Carolina kicked off and Carlisle f bled, Carolina recovering with goal go. They went. No extra point made. The third touchdown came in the ond quarter when Carolina recover fumble on the 40-yard line and after vancing a pass, Wingfield to Burke, ted a counter. Again in the second period Jim V ner, Columbia boy, tackled Rhame was carrying the ball with such the Carlisle star fumbled the ball Causey picked up the ball and ran yards for the fourth touchdown. Carolina's final touchdown came the fourth quarter when Verner in cepted a pass and ran 50 yards fo touchdown. Carlisle's first score came in the ond quarter when after a kickoff caught a Carolina punt and returned 50 yards and then went over and ki goal. The second cadet counter came in fourth quarter when they got the ball the 38 yard line and Rhame scored on end rwi from the 15 yard mark. goal was missed. Rhame was the outstanding star the game making runs of 40 and yards, and being the mainstay of locals' offense. Burke and Boylston, played best the Collegians but the whole team p ed good ball.
