R. G. BELL ADDRESSES
STUDENT ASSEMBLAGE
"Carolina Has Risen From An
Ordinary-College to a Real
University
"When I came here" said R. G. Bell
in a talk at the "Y" meeting Wednes
day night.
"The student body at Carolina number
ed 579,today it is 1117, about twice as
many as it was then. Literary Societies
then numbered 175 to 200, now they
number 300. There were seven organiza
tions in 1919 which had regular meet
ings; now there are at least 30, besides
the athletic organizations."
Concerning the Y. M. C. A., he said
that in 1919, there was an average at
tendance of 102 at the Wednesday night
meetings; last year there was an aver
age attendance of 110. There were 68
attenfants of the Bible classes in 1919;
now there are 357. Then there were 278
members of the Y. M. C. A.; now there
are 422.
"This College," says Mr. Bell, "has
risen from an ordinary college into a
real university, bi'inging with it all
the problems of a large university. In
this growth we have chaos in reference
to our studnet activities. Many organiza
tions whose appeal is practically the same
men are meeting at the same time. 'Tle
practical result is that the students will
follow the one which he is most interest
ed in and all organizations suffer.
"There are a few men on the campus
carrying all the burdens and all the
leadership while the rest follow." "Can
any one," he asks, "carry on all these
efficiently? The result is that it is
a detriment to the individual student and
to the organizations of which he is an
of ficer.
"The glory of Carolina in student ac
tivities is not keeping pace with the
growth in numbers at Carolina," strong
ly asserts Mr. Bell." "And what," he
asks, "are we going to (1o about the
chaos of these clv'bs?
"At one time there was a constitution
of the student body, but where is it now?
No one knows. What we need is a con
stitution and that enforced. A group
of competent members should be select
ed together with faculty representatives
and they should study the conditions and
the needs of the student body, and write
a constitution that would be put ot use.',
"One reason why we haven't
more men to take these duties and not
pile t4 so many on one man is the fact
that we do inot train them to become
leaders when they are Freshmen and
Sophomores.
Mr. Bell also suggests all organiza
tions having regular meetings should
have their representatives get together
and form a program of meetings so there
would be less conflict.
Growth of the spirit of sincerity in
the classroom and other activities should
be cultivated. This "what can I get by
with' attitude prevails too great an ex
tent now.
"Trhe life of this school," says Mr.
Bell, "depends upon the development of
our best home traiuing. We see others
doing some things, andl just because they
seem to he the custom, we follow them.
even tho we knowv they are wvrong.
"There wvas a time wvhen this school
was considleredl a hell-hole of iniquity,
and maniy considler it so yet. It is up
to us to counteract this injustice (lone
to Carolina.
"The activities of this college must
be built on honor and integrity. Tlhese
principles are fornd in the Christian re
ligion.
"Can we get order out of chaos," Mr.
Bell asks in conclusion, 'andl at the
same time preserve honor, integrity, and
sincerity ?"

Ten. 16, a (lark horse in the Bible
Discussion group race, went ahead in the
last meeting with 230 points. 'T'here
are a number of classes close on the
heels of Ten. 16 and it will have to go
some to maintain their small lead. Jt
is too early in the course to predict any
wireiers, but with the spirit that has al
ready been shown and with 357 men en
rolled at the first meeting, it can be
seen even at this early date that there
will be a much larger attendance to
Bible classes this year than ever before
and that there will be some keen compe
tition yet.
The men of the caml)us are taking
very mich interest in these discussions,
which is very gratifying to those who
are taking a leading part. We can ac
complish our desires only by the co-oper
ation of every one. Keep up the good
work, men. we need your support.
When an outsider asks a Carolina
Man What Carolina is doing toward the
shaping of Character, the building of
high ideals and citizenship, the Caroli
na student naturally speaks of the dis
cussici groups, Blue Ridge, Y. M. C. A.
deputation teams, *and literary societies..
These are some of the organization that
are making Carolina grow. So it is
up to every man at the University to
back the discussion groups and make
them successful.

By the time this issue of The Game

will have been played and others will
be under way. The Citadel and New

battle between two ancient rivals.
Anderson is the scene Friday of the

Of course the big game of local in
terest is the Carolina-Presbyterian game.
A real battle is- expected for P. C. in ad

by year of putting up one of its hardest
fights against Carolina caused more or
less excitement up on Riggs Field la5t
Saturday.
Furman will have a stiff test on Satur

Georgia at Augusta, Ga. Yale was only
able to beat Georgia 7 to 6 last Saturday.
"Tain't no use" to remind any reader
of this paper about next Thursday's bill

that Furman and Davidson meet at the

Let's go; the world series is out of the
