Freshman Class Marches With Shirt Tails Flying Parade Staged Immediately After College Night Exercises As a grand "finale" to the spirited college night exercises held September 19th a Freshman parade was called for. The Freshman showed the right spirit and resppuded by marching up Main street with shirt tails flying and lustily 'singing, "We'll ride Old Clemson on the rail." Flanked on each side by upper-class menl, the procession snake-danced down as far as the Jefferson Hotel. On the way back they passed through the Broad way Theatre, stopping long enough to give "15" for Carolina and "15" for the Broadway. From there they proceeded to the Capitol where they gathered around the statue of the "Father of our Country" and yelled until one of the signs on Main street was torn down by the re verberation and the massive dome of the Capitol itself was nearly cracked. The upper-classmen gave "15" for the Freshmen and all returned to the cain pus. The Freshmen certainly have the true Carolina spirit and we hope to keep it up the whole year through. -U.S.. A GOOD THOUGHT On Winthrop's opyling day certain of their students were invited to speak as representittives of important groups and organizations. Carolina students, if they would sub stitute "Honor System" for "Student Government," "he" for "she," "Caro lina" for "Winthrop," could take the address of Miss Frances Landor, presi dent of the Student Government Asso., to themselves. N iss Lander's address, as it appeared in "The Johnsonian,", follows in full: "Honor is Honor, and truth is truth. A promise is both honor and truth and we can't break one without breaking the other. At the beginning of each schol astic year we sign a pledge to uphold the rules and regulations of the Student Government Association. If we break any of the rules of the Student Govern ment we are breaking our honor, we're disregarding our responsibilities as citi zens. "XVe are told that we go to school to prepare for life but a saier view is that each day we live in college is a day in life. If we hold the responsibil ities of college citizenship lightly, we arc apt to have an equal disregard for the fundamentals of national citizenship. Self-government, after all, is the only government worth having. Here at Winthrop we have the Student Self Governniat Association and it is our aim to eilpilaize more than ever tihe word self. To do this it will be neccesary for each member of the association to realize her own respoInsib)ility and the more cap)ably she assumes these respon sibilities of Winthrop citizenship the more ably she can assume those iore se sions responisibilities of world citizen ship.'' These questioning mi.ds beget wholesome effects. Some time ago, a student was prepar ing an especial paper, and lie decided to submit it for approval to a faculty mem her. Fortunately, a thought, somewhat on this wise came to him: "Revise, till you yourself are without doubt as to the propriety of everything you say." The completed paper, falling far short, per haps. in merit, had, none the less, en gendered a stronger self reliance in the student's mind which could eiot but leave him a stronger individual. Doubts are destined to rise in the mind of all who study, doubts concerning mat ters of theory and practice. When they do commence to rise on the sky line of any one's horizon, that one is coming into a nev realm of experience and of promise. Doubts are to be welcomed and afterwards settled. Not to have them is to stagnate. It is a fine feeling, that of having doubts behind oneself. --U.S.C.
