So far as chanApion hip teams are concerned it seems'to be unanimous silence on the parts of the oaches. They are not even making ny boasts. If they have been conserva ive in the past they are ultra-conserva ive this fall. From the eight South Carolina colleges has come practically no "inside dope." The fans, who like o guess and to speculate, have their wishes fully gratified this year. Some of the teams have lost valuable layers. The degree of these losses vary md in some cases there is plenty of oom for speculation among the fans as o what degree the varsity squads will e affected by the loss of the 1923 stars nd to what advantage the new men vill show up and as to how they will e able to fill up the gaps. However, judging from the dope that s coming out and from that which is caking out there appears to be pros ects for hard fighting by all the teams nd that win or lose they will be able o make their victorious opponents know hat they have not had a set up. UNIVE ISj GAMECOCKS BE MEET ER Determined to Give Invaders A Warm Reception in Opening Game TODAY IS THE EVE OF BAT TLEI For tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 o'clock the 1924 football team of the University of South Carolina will enter tain the girdiron warriors of Erskine college in the opening gun of the football season on Davis Field. The State of Thursday morning car ried an item with a Due West date line headed "What will Erskine do with the Carolina Gamecocks ?" This is rather an early time to make predictions for we have not had much of an opportunity to look over the Birds and of course the Seceders are an unknown quantity to the Carolina supporters. Carolina for the past few (lays has been practicing behind closed gates and it is safe to say that Metzger, McFaddin and Stoney et al are showing the Birds something new in tricks to pull on the invaders. Erskine truly has a brand new team with a brand new coach and a brand new spirit but the Carolina mentors realize all this and though preparing for a stiff fight for victory do not at all under estimate the strength of Galloway's pro tegges. Carolina men and supporters however may rest assured that it is not so much a question of "What will Erskine do with the Carolina Game cocks" as it is "What will the Carolina Gamecocks do to the Erskine Se ceders ?" Ye scribe is rather sympathetic with those Gamecock enthusiasts who to night have visions of a Carolina walk over to the tune of 21-0 or some such one-sided battle. He warns those who would wish to indulge in a little friendly wager not to get too eager. It is not at all impossible for Erskine to score nor it is improbable that they might keep the Birds from crossing the 0 yard line. In our estimation a margin of 7 points would be sufficiont and he had better bet even money. Not that the Gamecocks do not intend to win-they do and will fight tomorrow in the opening game just as if it were the Fair Week classic with the Clemson Tiger growvling around the barnyard. A Carolina team alwvays fights, this year our prospects are exceedingly bright for the team has a morale never before eqjualledl on Davis fieldl. For the first time in years wve have two capable quarters on the field, two peppy men who may be left to handle the team with their own cool judgement. There is plenty of material on the field and there is every probability that almost all of the candidates wvill be in action tomor rowv. I f so have you been in to see Jimmie Driver, director of student activities? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. It is (one so that if it is at all possible.that two or more entertainments on the same night will not conflict. Mr. Driver will hardly make any alternation in the care fully mapped out plans for the eYtertain ment but before Isetting the date it would be well for those in charge to see him so as to insure no shange. Under the new student policy every entertain ment must have the sanction of the di rector of student activities before it can allowed. Regular meetings of such or ganizations such at Literary societies, Y. M. and Y. W. C. A., student clubs etc, do not have to have this permission after the first meeting, it is only the entertainments that must secure his 0. K. Driver Tells Students To Hold Athletic Tickets Jimmie Driver, director of student ac tivities, asks that the attention of every student be called to his athletic associa tioi ticket which has been issued him this year. It is of a distinctive color and surrounded by nutmbers marked off for the various events. The name of the student holding the ticket is upon the face and to make it valid requires endorsement on the reverse side. When these tickets are presented at the gate, name of holder and endorsement will be examined and if it is found that Some one other than the one to whom the ticket was issued is presenting it the ticket will be taken up and someone embarrassed. So take the tip fellows, do not give your ticket to your girl or to a friend out of town. Even if you do not need it to get in the game. You will have to present it at sometifi,c or other, so hang on to it. In past years it was permitted that the mioi who did not need tickets be allowed to give theirs to a girl. But not now. .ach man must present a ticket to be punched and if someone else pre sents his ticket it will be revoked-the same applies to the co-eds. Of course we want your boy and girl friends at ALL the games but each and every stu dent can afford to buy one ticket.
