School of Pharmacy More evidence that Carolina continues to grow-what is it this time? Nothing less than another new school-The School of Pharmacy. This latest addition to the branches of knowledge taught at Carolina was installed at the opening of the present session with E. T. Motley as Dean. Three standard courses in the subject are taught is this department as the fol lowing clipping from the new catalogue: I. A Four Year Course leading to the degree of B. S. in Pharmacy: 1. First Year English; History; Mathematics; Chemistry; Zoology; Pharmac cutical Technique. 2. Second Year English; P3hysics; Botany; Qual itative Chemical Analysis; Phar macy; Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Pharmacy Laboratory. 3. Third Year French or German; Organic Chemistry; Quantitative Chemical Analysis; Organic Chemistry La boratory; Pharmacy; Pharmac ognosy; Bacteriology. 4. Fourth Year French or German; Pharmacy; Pharmacology; Pharmacognosy; Pharmaceutical Testing and Drug Assaying; Prescriptions and In compatibilities; U. S. Pharmaco peia; Toxicological and Urine An alysis. II. A Three Year Course leading to the degree of Pharmaceutical Chemist, Ph. C.: 1. IELterargj &artrtia i CLARIOSOPHIC In accordance with a custom of long standing, the Clariosophic Literary So ciety gave its annual reception to the incoming Freshmen at 8 p.m. Septem ber 22nd. Two hundred Freshman and non-menibers attended. The president D. S. Russell called the meeting to order and rendered the initial address of welcome. The address was such as would make a "rat" feel comfortable in a Death-on-Rats manu facturing plant, let alone in "the leading crowing point" of a "Gamecock roost." Dr. D. W. Melton, a former Clario sophic was introduced as the first speak er and made an appeal to the Ft eshmen to affiliate themselves with one of the two societies at once. Professor James Norwood made a short talk after which the president, Mr. Russell brought forth a tremendous ova tion by admouncing that the refreshments would be served. C. T. "Greese" Graydon was then in troduced as the only man able to divert the attention of th audience from their ice cream and cigars. Professor Perry Teeple then made an interesting talk on society work, leaving the impression with the students of the Engineering School that it would safe for them to join a literary society at once. Hon. R. M. Smith was the next speak. er of the evening. He gave the new men some valuable advice concerning college activities. Professor E. Marion Rucker was the final speaker of the evening. He who reminded the new men of their mission at college and exhorted them to "Be Men." EUPHRADIAN The EuPhradian Literary Society on Wednesday evening held its annual re ception in honor of the new men and non-society men on the campus. In ad diticn young ladies from Carolina Co lumbia and Chicora were invited and made a very pleasing addition to the af fair. N. C. Johnson, first term president of the society, acted as presiding officer. He opened the evening's entertainment with a word of welcome to the old men hers and the young ladies present and ivited the Freshman to join the society. The f'rGt speaker on the prngram was Dr. N. D. Melotn, president of the Uni versity, who gave a very interesting and convicing talk on the function of Lit erary societies. He intersperced his re marks with some of the incidents of their glorious past at Carolina. Dr. Melton was followed by L. T. Baker, dean of the University, who stressed the importance of a man being able to think while on his feet and illus trated his points by telling of'his Frosh experience. The announcement by the Dean that he was now a proud Grand father was greeted with a spontaneous outbrust of congratulatory applause. Dean Baker laid great emphasis upon the relation of literary society activities up)on the college mani's education and made the statement that the two literary societies had brought more glory on the University in the past five years than any other form of student activity or University wvork. In closing, the Dean urgedl that every freshman affiliate him self wvith one of the literary societise with the idea of developing himself and( bringing greater credit to his Alma Mater. Assistant Coach Burnett Stoney, the third speaker spoke of the experience and capacities in wvhich lie had found his E~uphlradlian training invaluable. Stoney remarked upon the extensive improve ment wvhich have been made on the cam puIs since his (lay, including the fact that the society halls had been: well cared for. ISYLVAN BROS. The entire Euphradian society is glad to welcome coach Stoney back to Carolina. The closing talk was made by Ed. Hodges, of Columbia. After a peppy introduction on, the significance of Euphradianism Mr. Hodges gave a lively talk on the manner in which Literary so cieties developed manhood and thq urgent need in the increase of this work in the world of today. After this talk the society was ad journed into an informal reception which lasted until the conventional closing hour of about 10:15. The refreshments of punch and cakes were prepared by Cecil Harris as master of ceremony and his host of cohorts. It seems that Cecil has the "low-down" on punch making as he has prepared it for the last few Euphra dian receptions and take it from the scribe that it is the best stuff tasted around here A. P. (After Prohibitoin). It was a grand and glorious affair and already Euphradians are looking forward to the next reception in honor of the President. --U.S.C "What are you going to do?"
