Party One of Best of the Year.
One of the most delightful and en
joyable parties of tile year was given
oi last Saturday night by the Hypat
ian i,iterary Society in honor of its al
tnnae. The two men's societies were
present and many others who are inter
ested in the society. Miss Wrenna
1lancock, the presideint, gave an ad
dress of welcome, extending the socie
ty's greetings especially to Dr. and Mrs.
ieltoen, Mrs. Beard. Mrs. vauchope,
Mrs. Abel, irs. Swindell, and Mrs.
Jay.
'l'he program was interesting and
varied. First was anl oration by Nliss
Allna Swind'i-1, then, a reci.tatioIn by
Miiss Grace King. A group of popular

Praises the Work of Dr. Melton
Monday morning the students were
the recipients of a short talk from Rear
Admiral, Paymaster, Sam McGowan, re
tired, of fthe U. S. Navy, and an alum
nus of the University. Paymaster Mc
Gowan was introduced by Dr. Melton.
Mr. McGowan opened by telling of
the cI)IIulitiols as they were on thie cam
pus while he was a student here? He is
a class mate of Dr. Melton. He also
told of some of the degrees tha,t lie
hoped the University would allow him

TRACK PROSPECTS BRIGHT
Many Students Are Trying Out
This Year
Carolina's 1924 track team under the
watchful eye and tutelage of Coach
Jack Crawford is rapidly rounding in
to shape for the approaching season,
and by the time of the State Track
meet here on May 3, should be in the
best of condition to give any of the
nuimerous title contenders a run for
their Ioney.
About tenty-five or thirty men, the
largest track squad ever seen on Davis
.Field, are out for the various positions.
Some of these are experienced varsity
men, others hail from the ranks 4)
last year's freshmen and still a third
group is of iew Carolina men.
Bill 1lanahianl is captain of the Gar
net and Black pacemakers and avows
his intentititonI to set up some new rec
(r(s in the 440 and 880. Bill Poole is
seeil daily at work with the Vaulting
pole al aimis to set a new record for
height. C. 13. Parsons, who specializes
in tle mile and two mile, is in excel
lent cm(dition after having spent the
winter wrking with the cross country

are ill traiiiiig for the brtlad and high
jumips, R. C. Cobb also spent the win
ter trailing with the cross country
rniiers and with Frank Meeks intends
t(4 cnter tle sprinting events. Barre

taking inl the hurdles and Brock, the
heavy man of the teami, is to handle
the javelin, discus aid shot. Otier
mien, who are showing up well in sprints
are Williamson and Rowe, two more
cross country men. There are several
more very good men trying out for
regular places.
This year the Gamecocks have a real
schedule. Trinity : oif North Carolina
plaiis to send their Blue Devil team
here on April 12, the Tri-State inet is
to be held inl Columbia a week later
with Georgia and the two Carolinas
striving for first honor. The Annual
Southern Intercollegiate Conference
meet will be held in Atlanta beginning
oi April 20, the Gamecocks will be en
tered in this event as well as in the
State meet on May 3 when Furman,
Clemson, Presbyterian, Wofford and
the Citadel will send teams to compete
with the Birds in their own back yard.
