CHRISTMAS SUGGESTIONS (lspeciallv for c(illege students.) We note with a great deal of interet the Christmas advertisements in the ,i-RAny DIcEsr. They seeni to he de _Wigle(d especially for college stiudc.nits. for not only are the go.,ds advertised if the hihif-st <uality but the prices have a _reat .appeal to the stu.let jinckethook. We agree with tle DiaEsT that at this tine of the year we are racking our brains alut Christmas presents, and it is with much pleasure that we reprint tl,eir valuahle suggestions. "The biggest of all gifts. Radiola V 4 !2.50." ."'he individualized Corona. a wonder fl idea ill Christmas gifts--$50." "Christmas gifts that last: Sheaf fer's pens-pencils. Priced from $8 to $100." Of course, all students must buty the $100 ile. "The appreciated gift : Waterman's Ideal 'oulntaiiI Plen. $2.50 to $50.00." Again, we suggest the latter. lBut this neceds no comment: A Cadillac For Christmas ''As Christmas I )ay approaches, a mwi's first thought is of a gift for 'her.' \\hat could please her more than a New \-3 Cadillac?" -C. The poem, The Hungary Hiart hv Anina T. Swindell, appeals to ones sym pathy. It is sad and makO a peculiarl contrast with the short story just' beiore it. The theme is found in the last line of the fourth verse: the song of the hungry heart. 'Twill be hushed into silence soon." The second verse ciul(l have been well left out, perhaps bettering the poem. An essay, The Virtue and 'romise in South Carolina by J. A. Henry. is in teresting, based on facts, and well writ ten. The writer is sincere and the essav would be more than worth the time oie would take to read it. True Souith Carolinians should read articles like thi'. and rub their sleepy eyes. 'T'lie follow ing pa.agraph is very well put : 'h negro population of the state is a sleep ing giant. . . . . . . . . We may turn deaf ears to the task it calls us. Ih:u the cloud that is no higger than a man', hand will grow. We <lare not call fr Pilate's basin and then wash our han(lk in it." The Viking, a poem by M. K. \\alsh. is not as good as the first one in the issue. The subject might have becn more modern. The moral is never sa (lie. The editorials are not had if anyone would read them. More attractive sub jects might cause them to be more wi(le ly real. It seems that IV hal's Wi'hat aid W1hY is a littie out of place in such a maga zine as the 'CAI.NIAN is sipposed to be. 'he lA-onoiies Discussion Chub should run a separate paper. The E xchange Department is very weil gotten ip, althomugh it is not very i.u teresting to many students. Not because of any flaw in it but merely because it is what it is.. C. B. W. THE LIBRARY We note with a great deal of pleas ure that the Library is now being kept open betwcen the hours of six and seve-i in tle evening. It is such a convenient place to spetid a few mi.nutes bet\ween suipper and the varions meetings which we have on the campis aroxtnd seven o'ch ck.
