season in South Carolina "had very
bright prospects" not oily had their
reputations for veracity tpheld in the

a little jolt thentselves. All of them
did not make predictions that some of
the South Carolina teams would win
victories in the initial battles, and two
unexpected victories were scored in
Saturday's games. Furman defeated the
University of Virginia, 13 to 10 and
though the bare score of the Clemson
Auburn game indicated a "scoreless
tie" some claim the battles on Riggs'
field a moral victory for Clemson over
the Plaiisnien from Alabam'. These
two games especially set thousands of
tongues to wagging. It has started
that ancient slort of "comparative
scores" once again. Despite the fact
that it has been con<.lusively shown
that "comparative scores" in many
cases mean n.othing, yet it is a game
that fans will play.
The season got off to a good start.

is natural to expect some defects in the
first game. but is it not better that
these defects crop out at this stage in
order that they may be corrected and
at the same time to keep a team from
getting over-confident ? Over-confidence
will manifest itself even with those who
try to fight it off. The weak points
shown inl the game Saturday will serve
as an object lesson for coaches and
players alike to work on and few are
losing sleep over this now.
Clemson's Moral Victory
As already mentioned there are many
fans who claim that Clemson wotln a vic
tory over Auhurn, although the score
read "nothing to nothing." This has
bcen conceded by those whi are not
biased to Clemsomi. too.

when the Piurple Hurricatie snatched
off a 13 to 10 victory over the Univer
sity of Virginia.

criterion would give the impression
