COLLEGE NIGHT IS A GREAT SUCCESS Thos. P. Stoney Heard-Stunts are Presented "College Night" for many years an aninual event of opening week at Car olina was held last Saturday night in the Chapel. Carolina men not only "turned out" en masse but "turned loose" as well. The meeting was pre sided over by 0. D. Johnston, presi (lont of the Y. M. C. A. and President W. 1). Melton welcomed the new men into the folds of the Alma Mater. The main speech of the evening was that of Mayor-Nominate Thomas P. Stoney, of Charleston. Tho arriving too late to make his address at the for mal opening lie delighted his hearers with a few well directed remarks. Re ceiving an ovation upon being intro duced, his talk rang with an appeal to the stu(lents to give "their all" to the grand old institution which they are attending, dealing especially with the importance of football. Enthusing old and new inei alike in his address lie pledged the support of the Alumni in anything the University might choose to foster. Irvine F. Belser, of Col umbia, an enthusiastic alunmus and former star athlete, spoke for the al umni association. This address was followed by a fast two roui(l Boxing Match between Hines, of Spartanurg, and Allisont late of Syracuse University. The result was a draw, as was a five minute wres tling match between McKee and Kir Ten. Walker, Durant, Tompkins and Poole put i) a clever gym exhibition. In order to familiarize the new men with the various phases of campus activities the different organizations put on stunts or speakers. J .E .Han kins spoke for the Honor Committee; S. T. Sparkman for the publications. The two men's literary s(cieties put on a debate, "Resolved that every Fresh mai should join a Literary Society." The Eupliradians were represented by G. M. Collier and Ralph Ramsey and the Clariosophicis 1)y E. B. Castles and I. H. Folk. The lypatian Society Girls also put on a stunt. Bill Holland made a strong plea for Athletics and Coach Sol Nletzger told Welcome We wish to e welcome to all Carolina Men. The "Y"s stunt was that of a radio entertainment, giving jall the campus gossip and a1 little football oI Clemson of a highly burlesque nature. The college scngs and yells, led by Hill Collins. played a large part in the evening s entertainment and brought the excitement to a fever heat. With justificable pride The Gamecock points to their stunt, which was the crying out of the paper by "newsies" when the Imleeting began to disperse. This brought to a close a most en joyable evening and one full of instrue tion for the new men. May they always keep the spirit they displayed College N ight. 000 THE GLEE CLUB The first try out for the Glee Club was held in the chapel this week and the director, Mr. Matheson, was very much pleased with the material that came out. There are openings for sev eral high tenor voices and also for baritones. The manager has several dates in view and the club will no doubt be in good shape for the annual concert held in December. Mr. Matheson urges all who are in terested to come out for the Glee Club. The i.nldications are good and we are expecting to have the best Glee Club in the state this year. Also, we are trying to get lp) a real string orchestra which will be a great addition to the club. The regular Illeeting of the Y. W. C. A. will be held Monday afternoon at their hall at 4 P. M. All of the womein students are cordially invited to be present at both functions. C. ing the newest ~uality Footwear (SON'S Phne 3768 rO-EDS ENGAGE IN EXCIT ING RACE Tuesday afternoon just as the two o'clock hell rang loafers around the canteen noticed a queer scene in front of Professor Rucker's house. Two co-eds were seen coining from Meltoi Hall towards the canteen; on their heads were queer looking objects which could hardly have been articles of head gear, rather they seemed to remind the onlookers of-well, as the two girls came nearer the objects appeared to be books. They exclaimed to the wonder ing boys that they were running a race - from Melton Hall to Davis College. 7 'ihe idea wias to get to the goal first without dropping the books. When the awaiters-of-letters understood what the co-eds were tryit.g to do they began to cheer and urge them on. Some were for Miss Swindell; others for Miss Kirven The race was very exciting. First Miss Swindell would get a few paces ahead and her books would tilt to one side and she would have to make a desperate effort to keep them from dropping. This would give Miss Kirven an advantage and -she would catch up and pass her opponent. Then a similar accident would happen to her and reverse her chances of winning. It took several inilutes for them to get out of sight from the canteen and when last seen near Bull Street they seemed to have equal chances of winning. Just as they passed from sight the mail came and those who were so unfortun ate as not to get a letter were never theless rewarded by having a grand stand scat or rather stan(l, at this ex citing handicap race. U.S.C. CLARIOSOPHIC RECEPTION FOR NEW MEN All freshmen will do well to remein ber that on Friday night, September 28th, at 7:45, the Clariosophic Society will hold its annual reception in honor of the Freshman Class in its halls on - the third floor of Legare College. All new men at the University are cordially ilvited to attend the reception and get acquaiited with the mIen in this Society. This is an annual affair which is looked forwar(l to with keen interest by both new and old ien. A very interesting program will be carried out iiicliding speeches by )r. William 1). Melton, President of the University, F.. Marion Rucker, of the L,aw School and "Greece" Graydon, of Columbia, all of whom are alumni of the Clariosophic Literary Society. In addition to the attractive program there will be "beaucoup" ice cream, punch, and cakes as well as plenty of smokes. Mr. R. M. Smith is president of the (lariosophic Literary Society and Mr. R. C.
