Fletcher Fairev now has his wash
iig done for 75 cents per week in
stead of one dollar by reason of the
fact that lie has lost fifteen pouinds,
a fact which only the washvoian
has discovered.
Henry Fair has organized a class
in female psychology, anld while it
is not expected that the class will
he well attenlded, it is hoped that
those who attend will derive much
blenefit from Mr. Fair's experience
with the sublject matter.
Aimbs, 'lcLCan, Dickert and
Black have been cut from the swim
ming squad because of their lack of
ability. The team, which is iOw
comiposed of Gaston, Vairey, Hu1m
3 phries, Funiderburk amid Stcinburg,
is perhaps the fastest material in the
state, and the meet soon to be held
under the auspices of Dr. Watichope
in Prof. Davis' bath tul) is expected
j to produce new records in all events.
i It is said that Gaston's swan (live
S from the cold water faucet is posi
Z tively inimitable, and that Ilumph
rie's high (live from the lavatory is
also executed with truly remarkable
grace aid form. Funlderburke's
specialty is the hundred yard dash,
which is 67 times the length of the
tub. His best time was 11.2.
Prof. Snowden has lately written
a peem on Greenville, p)raising that
city in particular, and the Piedmont
section in general. The poem is
very metrical, and although charac
terized by his usual lack of thought,
is sincere and musical. It is full of
unique orchestration, and borders on
the contrapuntal. le is to be con
gratulated on this remarkable con
tribution to literature.
'he Chanticleer Club held an in
teresting meeting in Flynn Hall last
night, the topic for discussion he
ing "Certain Tendencies of So-call
ed Flappers." The club handled the
proposition with characteristic
frankness, and all present seemed
to find the subject very much in
order, although Messrs. Wells,
Beasley and Wittkowsky were seen
to blush at several periods of the
discussion. Refreshments were
served, through the generosity of
Mr. Bell, consisting of cold sliced
watermelon and pre-war gin. None
of the members attended their
classes the following day, but it is
hoped that they will recover.
Bob Jones has been in the infirm
ary for several (lays as the result of
D)udley Saunders having offered to
buy him an apl)Ie.
George Osborne andl Dick Speni
cer hit the trail recently at one of
"Billy" Sunday's meetings. Spenm
cer has been conmsidering this step
for some time, as lhe felt that lhe
could best show his approval of Mr.

was unable to find out why Mlr. (Os

P ro f. R'ucker told his freshumanm
class Tumesdlay that he once lost a
case, The anlnouneemnent came as a
shock to thme members, as they have
never had any reas;on to suspect suich
a thing before.
Prof. Snowden has again conm
tradlictedl the rumior about his stay
in Venice wvithm Prof. Greeni.

BEAUTY CONTEST
Conducted By Garnet and Black
Somec weeks ago the editor of the
ariet & Black held a beauty coi
est. Ile wanited this as in fo:mation
For the aninal that Ie thinks lie is
roing to put out before Columibs

ca. You lads know wlhat this beauty
oltest is anld will not have to go
into any further details about it.
I don't know howi many of you
rot a chance to vote, but when the
votes were being counted it was
found that a pretty race was going
in between our Mormon friend, Mr.
Purley Tompknis, and "Ladykiller"
\Varmath. Everybody in the edi
torial room got so interested in the
:oitest that they had to stop work
nid watch the counting of the votes.
The force was pretty well divided.
Four for Tompkins and four for
\Varmath. At first Warmath had a
large lead but when the Co-ed votes
were counted this lead was quickly
:tt down atid fitially Tompkins rati
ahead, never to be passed again.
A fter a complete tabulation had been
Made it was found that \Variath
hiad 255 votes aid Tomiipkins 266
votes. It appears that \Varmiatli
was More popular with the boys of
the campus, but when it came to the
wotuen our friend IPtirley got prac
tically every vote-tio, lie failed to
get one vote. It tuirlied out that a
eo-edl votedh for Warmath. At litrst
we all wvondered why Purley was so

have it. A (lay or two before the
contest camne off the tmembers of

stldents were overjoyed to hear tlie

About a veck later the appropria
tion bill came up for first readilg on
the floor (of the Itlouse. The Uni
versity section was of niost interest
to1 all. There was not an item in the
(riginal bill that was nlot cialged.
MIen were holding each other down
inl their seats ill order to get a
chance to be able to increase this or
increase that. Not a o ne in tile

through a seconid reading, and tihe
following day the bill passed the
third reading so quickly that one
man walte<l to call it back becaise
he said that if all other busiless
was t raiisacte( as quickly they
would not be able to stay the elitire
forty days as required by law.
'Ihat Senate, why they are so
strong for the University that the
Finance Committee increased the
amount asked for ill the bill to over
two million dollars. The senators
waxed eloquent in their praise for
the institution that has withstood
the storms for more than a hundred
years. When President Jackson
called up the Appropriation il
there were wild crys for the Uni
versity section. A staunch Cita
delite moved that the bill, relative to
the University, le passed as approv
ed by the committee. A roll call
was not necessary. A rising vote
signified that the Senate was behind
higher education in the State of
South Carolina.
Wlen the news hit the campus the
students ran out of their classes,
formed a parade, aiid, uni1der the
leadership of the newly elected
cheer leader, Bill Collins, marched
uip ti the State House, entered the
Senate Chamber and gave fifteen
Ilusty yells for tile illembers of the
tipper house. They next repaired to
the IIouse and the yells broke out
afresh. Business was dispensed with
alnd the members gathered around
the boys and said "go to it, we are
for Carolina first, last and always."
Never was a finer spirit witnessed
by the mlembiers of the gallery. It
took three (lays for tile studenits to
get oiver the celebirations that fol
lowedl. Studying was forgotten for
the timue becing. D r. Melton was
toio happy to find words to express
his satisfaction.
