N. C.-S. C. Debate.
We have been unable thus far to as
- certain the success of the trio of Tarlicel
I ebaters after their deiarture from the
r'alm of the Gamecock. In any event it
will be a long time beff're a li'veler de
ate is held in this neck of the woods
that was the affair that took place be
tween the representatives of the two
C'arolinas at Chicra shortly after the
hoilidayS. There seems to be Sole little
;nering slispiciot1 (1f a doubt as to
1whether there were three votes ii lavor
oIf the S. C. to io or whether onme of the
judges was silliciently n1halanced as Ioo(t
to be convinced that there should he a
iitial cancellation of all initer-allie]
debts iicurred for the purpose of carry
I mI oi tle World War." The gentle
m14en1 of the allirmative (to fall back on1
Ie :mcieit and time-Ioiored verbage of
debating circles) still believe that there
h lihil have been three votes ComIinlg
I their -y , whether there were or nit.
althioulgh I dare say the debaters from
the Old North State are cquall positive
of the t fact that this shiould int have
been.
He that as it lay, we are confident
that at no time inl the past has such a
iaosive conglomeration of facts and fig
ure; been spread before the eyes of a
pair. or trio), of Caroliina debaters for
acceptance or refutation as was spreal
Ibroadcast by our gool friend I Iaiptoni
and his two "worthy colleagues." Noth
in) but the imo14st brazen sel f-coolnidence
c4ould have induced our Iisguided trio to
;)ppmse the oniniscience fromn North
Carflina's side of the plat forn and ve,
it was done. le hun dlieut almne know\s
how.
Theol question divides itself naturally
mito two parts, tle "loral obligatiton"
issue, and the ecnomic side of the mat
tcr. ()Iur gold friend. Wittkilwsky, took
the former of these two (moral obliga
tion equals "bull." pure and unadulter
ated) our good friend Iankins took
the (th1er side of the question (economic
discussionl equals "bull." under the guise
of fact); all the rest of the field wIs
vouchsafed to the editor of this humble
l;eriodical, who wishes to maintain most
strenuously that, considering the sub
ject lie was allotted, lie covered the
ground very comprehensively.
All in all, everybody seemed to have
a good time (you see there was a re
ception after the debate) and we only
hope that this little drama may have
another act next year. at which time an
other of the world's most vexing prohi
lems may be settled once and for all.
