The gamecock. (Columbia, S.C.) 1908-2006, February 17, 1923, Page PAGE THREE, Image 3
(Continued from page one.)
The Gamecocks, following their vic
tory over the Bulldogs returned to the
home coop, and there rested peacefully
until they ventured forth to invade the
northern part of the state. The first
foe they encountered was the Wofford
Terriers on'January 18th. With Lindsay
staring for the Terriers and Wright the
shining light of the Gamecocks, the Old
Gold and Black triumphed over the
Birds by the score of 24 to 21. It was a
nip and tuck affair and only a last min
ute rally saved Wofford from defeat.
From Spartanburg the Gamecocks pro
ceeded to Greenville wherein resides a
certain Purple Wind, mighty and de
fiant (although it has not been quite so
much so since last November 11th). The
Birds, upon their arrival in the Mountain
City, engaged in battle with this same
Wind, and after playing a wonderful
game and putting up a real fight, lost by
the score of 26 to 13. The Garnet and
Black had the edge on the Furman five
in the first half, and this period ended
.,with the score 13 to 8 in favor of Caro
Flina. However, the second period was
-all Furman, the Hornets making 18
.3points to a goose egg for the Birds.
-Wright and Wallace played the best
game for the losers, as did Alex Waite,
cowhile Andrews and Brock were the stars
.9of the Furman quintet.

After their defeat at the hands of
Furman the Gamecocks moved on to the
lair of the Tiger where they dropped
another on to the tune 27 to 19. The
Clemson team grabbed the lead at the
start and held it, the score at the end
of the first half being 11 to 6. For
Clemson, Bryan and Day were the stars,
while Wright and Willace played the
best ball of the Birds.
Following this game the Gamecocks
came home for a few days rest, after
which they journeyed to the camp of
the Indians on January 24th. Here they
again met with disasterous results,.for
although they fought hard every minute
of the game, they lost by a score of 41
to 9. Newberry played an excellent
passing game and their long shots seem
ed drawn to the basket by some invisible
force. Wollet was the star of the game,
being ably assisted by Shealy and Mc
Phee. L

After a 10-day rest during which
time examinations were disposed of, the
Gamecocks once again enteredl the arena,
thlis time on thleir owvn floor. The Cit

Tihe following night our territory was
again invaded, this time by the Wofford
T'erriers, and again the Birds performed
nobly and revenged themselves on the
Old Gold and Black by downing them 29
to 11. The feature of the game was the
frequent fouls on both sides and "Skeet"
Gasque's inability to miss free throws.
"Skeet" certainly outdid himself in that
game, leading in field goals and foul
goals. and ringing up 19 of the total 29
points all by his lonesome. Ed Lillis
was on the jo) again and played a bang
up game at guard as did Dick Baker.
For Wofford, Childs led his team in
scoring, while Collins played a good
game at forward. The Gamecocks again
got off to a long lead that was never
n danger of being overcome, the score
att the end of the first half being 19
to 4.

Wrestling Meet with Charleston
Tihe wrestling and boxing team of the
university met a team from the Charles
ton Y. M. C. A. at the university gym
nasium some time before Christmas, and,
with a little elbow grease and a few
twists, won the meet. Carolina only
lost one fall to the team from the City
by the Sea, "Red" Jenning's man being
just a bit too much for him. Buddy Mc
Kee won his bout on points, while Johnny
Montgomery and Lawrence Kirven won
on straight falls. In a bout that was not
a part of the regular meet, "Jumbo"
Gramling lost to Tompkins, of Columbia.
As the Charleston aggregation failed
to bring their boxers along, "Red"
Thompson took on "Kid" Parsons and
Frank Beckman in a couple of exhibition
bouts wvith the gloves, while Charlie
norman p)rodlucedl a ''(ark horse" in the
person of one Mr. McIlroy, wvhom he
engagedl in a lively three-round bout.
T'hese snappy boxing bouts adldedl zest to
the p)rograml.
The boxing and wrestling team is at
empting to secure matches wvith various
:olleges and Y. M.. C. A.s throughout
he state, and if they (do this there will
