Down from the hills of the Pied
mont section swept a mighty Purple
Hurricane on Saturday last; down it
swept upon the capital city of this fair
state with a terrible rush and roar, and
with a confidence hqrn of past tri
umphs, resolved to blow the feathers
of the Carolina Gamemck to the four
corners of the earth, ot, to quote the
"Furman Hornet," "scatter Gamecock
feathers all over the lower part of the
state." It arrived in all its pomp and
majesty and blew forth upon the chalk
against the Gamecocks defense; then
shrilled, and the Hurricane, receiving
lined turf of Davis Field. The whistle
the kickoff hurled its powerful hulk
the surprises hegan to happen; the
Hurricane found that it could not blow
away the wall of veritable steel that
blocked its path; time and time again
tle- mighty "Hoss" Chewning hurled
himself against the stonewall defense
of the Birds, only to find himself stop
ped as by sone powerful invisible hand;
time and time agail! "Dug" I'teat
threw himself against the line only with
the same result. And so the striggle
went on. and as it progressed the prov
ess of the much-to-be-feared -urricane
began to dwindle away. s(I that Whenl
the referee's whistie eided hostilities
the inighty H urricane was only a gen- I
tie zephyr wafting timidly hither and
thither about the field. The ll urricane
was like a tale that is told, and well
it might be. iIr htrin" a th;t super
