(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1.) attack, rang up three touchdowns, while the Seceders failed to get the pigskin across the Blue Stocking's last white line. There was another scrap last Thurs day also. This 'happened when the Purple Hurricane came out of its lair in Greenville and journeying to Flor ence, blew its way through, around and over the fighting Bull dogs from the City by the Sea. The game was played at the Pee Dee Fair. With its old time vigor the Hurricane kicked up a dust and when this cleared away it was discovered that the warriors of the Purple and White had acquired 28 point's to the Bulldog's none. The Citadel eleven put up a tough fight however and Furman had its hands full to earn the points that it did. This was the first appearance of the Citadel team against another State team this season. Furman pulled the iron man stunt last week. After defeating the Citadel in Florence, they proceeded to Atlanta where they met the Oglethorpe univer sity team on Saturday. However, two games a week doesn't seem to hurt theni for the final score Saturday read: Furman- 26, Oglethorpe 0. "Hoss" Chewning, along with "Doug" Poteat and "Jack" Dempsey appeared to be the stars of the game "Hoss" got away for a sensational run that accounted for one of the Hurricane's touchdowns. It is interesting to note that Furman played the entire game without a single substi tution. On Friday, October 20th, the Wofford Terriers invaded the Capital City and mot the .Gamecocks in their own backyard. "Rip" Major brought a scrappy aggregation to tussel with the Birds; but the final score will tell the tale; Carolina, 21; Wofford, 0. The Gamecock eleven, although rather bad ly crippled, managed to acquire three touchdowns. They were forced to put up a fight however, and once or twice the Terriers started drives that looked quite formidable. A feature of the game was Parler's 880 yard run to a touchdown after he received a Wofford punt on his own 20 yard line. The substitutions on the Carolina team were numerous, as Coach Metzger is looking ahead to the fair week battle with the Tigers. The stage is all set now for the Fair week classic, when the wiley Tiger will journey down from his lair in the hills to encounter the Gamecock who for the past two seasons has sent the Students' Note Book School Sta Personal S Can be piurc) from The Univ Connelly's 4 1228 Mai CIGARS, SODA POCKET B Agents for Johna COLUMBIA, - E Make This Store Y We Want Yc Because It Pleases Tiger home scoreless. Give em hell Ganiecocks I M. :00 STATE FOOTBALL SCORES. There are some people who are ar :lent fans of the great gridiron game that seem to think that it is possible to figure out all the results for an en tire season by comparing a few scores ioon after the season opens. In our >pinion this is all a hit or miss method, md after the figuring is all nicely down ilong comes some insignificant team md upsets the whole outfit. But still Ahere are some that stick to the old "comparative" method, and it is espe :ially for their benefit that the follow ing scores of state teams so far this season are tabulated. M. c< -_ _oo I CAROLINA-WOFFORD GAME C g; In spite of having several of their 9 best players crippled or sick the Caro lina Gamecocks took the Wofford Ter- a riers into camp last Friday afternoon I to the tune of 21 to 0. The boys from Spartanburg fought gamely till the last " whistle, but the Birds had them out- i classed in almost every department of ti the game. Once or twice during the v battle Wofford uncorked drives that it made Carolina rooters sit on the edge f4 of their seats but these did not get far c. until they were stopped by the stone wall defense put up by Metzger's a charges. Galt, a Wofford half had the f< Carolina supporters in breathless sus- ai pense on one occasion especially when sc he got away and was finally run out Ii of bounds on Carolina's ten yard line. tl These breathless moments were few hi and far between however, and as a Y4 general thir.g the followers of the Gar- 13 net and Black didn't have much to wor- a ry about. The teams seemed to be h: about evenly matched during the first w half, but in the third and fourth pe- it riods the Gamecocks had the decided k, edge, Wofford's line apparently weak- a ening. However Wofford has a line al that is aggressive and plays fairly con- tc sistent ball, and the backs are fast and Ur shifty, and are likely to get away with 13 something if not watched closely. tc The Gamecocks made the afternoon a profitable one for getting in shape for the battle .with the Tigers. They used nothing but straight football, ex toward the last of the gane when several passes were uncorked three of them being completed for good gains. rhe scrubs had plenty of chances to show what they had in them for at the close of the game they were going in so fast the newspaper reporters could not keep up with them; Coach Metz ger used at least 25 men. He was looking ahead to the Fair week game with Clemson:, and was taking no chances on having any more of the regulars on the casualty list. And speaking of casualties, it seems that the sick Gamecocks were very ac tive to be sick men. For instance, "Rock" Snipes, one of the shining lights of the afternoon, was supposed to be sick, but in our humble opinion if he was, we think it would be best for him to stay sick, for he punted better than he has this year, and when he started to run with that ball-Oh, gosh i But that's the way it goes, get a game chicken sick and you've got a sure enough fighter on your hands. Another thing-J. D. Parler was sup posed to have a bum knee, but Gee WhizI if you could have seen him kiting down that field on his 80 yard run for the first touchdown you'd have decided that he borrowed a pair of legs from a racehorse for the occasion. One fan declared that he did that 80 in less than three seconds flat. Anyway we know that not a Terrier laid so much as a finger on him after he grabbed that oval out of the ether on his own 20-yard line and started for the other end( of the field. Its hard to pick out the stars as usual, so we find it beyond our judgment ~ to do so. Anywvay we know that Rock and Al Ambs did play ball in that backfield, and Harry Lightsey and John ny McMillan played such consistent ball in the line that, to quote a local paper, "had to do something wvrong to attract attention'." Bill Holland showed up well as a passer, one of his tries being com pleted for a gain of 25 yards and pav ing the way for Carolina's last touch dowvn. Another player who deserves mention wvas Hanahan, the substitute right end. \Vearing the Garnet and e Silverdale Creamery LUNCHI Cleanest and nicest place in town to eat. For Wofford ross and Gault played a consistent lme in the backfield, and had to be atched on end runs, and passes. The hole Wofford line showed up well, though it weakened in the second Al f. A rather amusing freak took place !ar the end of the game, that resulted a touchdown for Carolina; however, ie score did not count as the Birds ere penalized fifteen yards for hold g. It was Carolina's ball on Wof )rd's 22yard line, the sigejals, were diled and the ball snapped but the kck for which the hall was intended id missed the signal and the oval >und a resting place in Bill Holland's -ns; having nothing else to do, and eing a convenient hole in front of m Bill dashed through and crossed ie goal line; but the referee called n back and invoked a penalty of 15 irds on the Birds for holding, so all ill's efforts were in vain. This was queer freak of the game, and we ive no doubt that Coach Doc Stewart, ho was on hand for te game, thought was a carefully planned, coice "mon !y play," unintentionally uncovered by careless quarter. Sorry he was dis >pointed I By the way, Bill was not be denied a touchdown, for a mo ent later he shot a 25-yard pass to rice, that put Carolina in a position score her last touchdown. M. The final scoring was done in the inal period. A forward pass was :onpleted from Holland to Waite, mt it was a foot or so short of mak ng the distance and Wofford wicked. Tlhe ball struck a Wofford player and Waite fell on it on the 25 yard line. Waite smashed the line for three yards and Holland then ran 22 yards for the touchdown, but Carolina was penalized 115 yards for holding. Hol land then shot a pass to Brice for 25 yards. Wofford was off side on the second Carolina play and it was first down again. Line smashes car ried the ball to the two yard line and Waite bucked over for the last touch :lown.
