For Carolina the whole line per
formed in good style, with Long and
Murdaugh doing the outstanding work.
It surely did look good to see Alex
and his side kick, Joe Lillard, tearing
open those big holes in the P. C. line
for Boatwright to drive through on that
winning parade down the field during
the third quarter. The Gamecock back
field played in sensational style through
out, with Boatwright, Holcombe, Jef
fords and "Jazz" playing "heads up
and hit 'em hard" all the time. Boat
wright ran the team well. The real
star of the game was "Jazz." He
looked like Alex Waite hitting the
line and Joe Wheeler on defense-and
that's high praise for any man. "Jazz"
is big and strong, knows the game, and
can't be brought (own by less than
three men-and even then he has the
excellent habit of carrying them two or
three yards nearer home be fore he
slows down to a trot. It would be
mighty hard to keep him ofT the var
sity this year if he were eligible. And
the same might be said of both Mur
(laugh and Long. That old saying
about "find two good tackles and you've
got a good line,'" is just about true,
and no one would have the nerve to
maintain that our freshmen haven't a
good line.
The day's scoring came about in the
third period only a short time after
the opening of the second half. Boat
wright and "Jazz" opened up a "pile
driver" attack upon the Presbyteriaii
line and carried the ball over half the
length of the field, with only occasional
help from the other men in the back
field. "Jazz" carried the burden of the
attack on his massive shoulders and
-atwright made a lot of friends when
he very properly gave his team-mate
the right to make the fiial drive over
the goal line for the only score of the
game. A place kick was attempted
after the touchdown but it was broken
up by some quick work by the P. C.
line.
.- Sensational Pinish.
The game closed with an incident that
was a mixture of comedy and tragedy.
With only a few seconds of play re
inaining, a Carolina back fumbled on
P. C.'s twenty-five yard line. The ball
was picked up and lost at least a half
dozen times before a Gamecock finally
curled up around it, but twice in this
time a Blue Stocking -had the pigskin
with no one between him and a touch
down. On each occasion he was pulled
down from behind before lie got under
way, by "Jazz" and Murdaugh, and on

State Football Review.
Well the second week of South Caro
lina football is over, and the old relia
ble pot of "dope" has been put on to
hoil. The first and foremost question
in the min(s of the fans throughout the
state is, of course. Who will be in the
race for the State Championship? Just
at present that is a hard nut to crack;
the "dope pot" hasn't boiled quite
enmugh as yet to give any light upon the
subject in question. It looks right now
like any\, team in the Palmetto state
might stand a fairly good chance at' the
much coveted "rag". Some teams are
running up hig scores while some are
harely nosing out their opponents.
None of the teams are in anything like
mid-season form, so one is unable to
judge which will get weaker and which
stronger as the season progresses. We
can Mly go over what has happened
thus far in the state and leave each indi
vidual to his own conjectures.

the Indians for a 33 to 0 score, while
the Gamecocks were taking the Se
ceeders' measure to the tune of 13 to 0,
and the Terriers were downing the Ag
gies 20 to 0; at the same time the Blue
Stockings were nosing out the Wildcats
by oie lone point, 8 to 7. The (lay follow
ing these skirmishes the Clemson Ti
gers met 'the Prayiiig Colonels of Center
on Riggs Field and went down fighting,
22 to 0.
So far st) good. Let us turn another
"WcR in the history: This brings us to
Saturdav, October 7th. On this date
Furman invaded Florida and defeateed
the Alligators 7 to 6; Wofford also
playing on foreign territory met de
feat at the hand of Camp Benning by
the score of 12 to 0; the Gamecocks
took the big end of a 7 to 0 score from
the Presbyterians of Clinton; meanwhile
the Tigers were piling up the score of
57 to nothing over the Newberry In
dians. and the Citadel Bulldogs, getting
into action for the first time, downed
the Paris Island Marines 14 to 6.
Total scoring of state teams against
state teams stands as follows: Clem
son leading with 57 points scored in
one game; Furman second with 33
points scored in one game; Carolina
third with .0 points scored in two games;
Newherry, P. C.. and Frskine have not
scored aganist a state team; Wofford
and Citadel have not played state teams
yet.
But after all what do comparative
scoires mean ? Absolitely nothing ! Re
menilr ii 1920 when P. C. licked Da
vidson 7 to 0. then Carolina took the
tlue Stockings into camp to the tune of
14 to 0, and then turned round and
lost to Davidson .7 to 0. Some tangle
in comparative scoring there, eh ?
Therefore we do not undertake to
make any wild predictions as to who's
who and why. but we jiust wait and let
nature take its course.
Anm aiditional feature of interest in
South Carolina football are the Fresh
man teams at the various colleges. Few
Freslimnen gaines have been played as
yet. but those that have been played
givc promise of some real football from
the first year men this season. On Fri
day. October 6th, the Carolina Fresh
men met the P. C. "Blue Sox", and de
feated them in a scrappy battle. 6 to 0.
On Saturday the "Rats" of Wofford
nosed out the Citadel Bull Pups by one
tmuchdown. 6 to 0, while the Little
Ilurricanes of Furman downed Bailey
Military Academy, 34 to 0. It is pleas
ing to note the interest that is being
itaken in these ganies. for the "Rats" of
4today are the 'Varsity of tomorrow.

Tennis Club Elects
A few (lays ago, the Tennis Cluib was
reorganized for this year in a meeting
held after the chapel exercises. The
